Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB ODELL, OF DRESDEN, TEXAS.
WASHING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 474,262, dated May 3, 1892.
Application filed November 27, 1891- Serial No. 413,192. (No specimens.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', JACOB ODELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dresden, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Washing Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved washing compound which can be employed in cleansing fabrics without danger of causing the colors to fade, but which, on the contrary, operates to set the colors and make them brighter, while thoroughly cleansing the fabric.
To accomplish this object my invention consists in the compound hereinafter described and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I take cocoanut-oil soap and grate or comminute the same and thoroughly incorporate therewith sodaash, common salt, muriate of ammonia, alum, salt of tartar, and boraX.
The following proportions are advisable: soda-ash, four pounds; common salt, two pounds; muriate of ammonia, one-half pound; alum, one-half pound; salt of tartar, one-half pound; borax, one-half pound; cocoanut-oil soap, one pound.
The common salt aids in setting the colors and in cleansing the fabric. The alum cooperates with the salt in setting the colors and neutralizes the effect of the ammonia in decomposing the chemicals of the coloringmatter in the fabric. The salt of tartar assists in decomposing and removing grease and renders the compound very useful for cleaning floors, furniture, and clothing. The common salt alsohasabeneficial effect on water impregnated with minerals and renders such water well adapted for use for washing purposes. The cocoanut-oil soap maintains the compound in a soft condition and prevents the ammonia from evaporating until brought in contact with the articles to be cleansed. The other ingredients act as usual in detergents or washingcompounds.
The Washing compound is useful for various purposes, but is particularly designed for cleansing colored fabrics, washing clothes, and removing grease from floors and clothes. The compound is also desirable for cleansing the hands, shaving purposes, and cleaning windows, furniture, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A washing compound consisting of sodaash, co mon salt, muriate of ammonia, alum,
