Unrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM M. IVHITTEN, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
COVER FOR CATCH-BASINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,714, dated February 9, 1892.
Application filed June 2'7, 1891. Serial No. 397,700. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. WHITTEN, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Catch-Basins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figurel isaperspective view of myimproved cover for catch-basins of sewers, showing the top raised. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front edge view. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of the top detached. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a modified form of the cover.
This invention is an improvement in covers for the catch-basins of sewers; and its object is to provide a cover which can be easily set Over the man-hole flush with the pavement and can be readily opened to clean the basin and fastened when closed; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and summarized in the claims.
Referring by letters to the drawings, the body of the cover consists of aplane-surfaced metal plate A, approximately U-shaped and having lateral short extensions a a at the extremities of its legs. From this plate, near the inner edge thereof, depends a deep verti cal flange 13, approximately U-shaped in plan and uniting at its ends with short vertical flanges b, depending from the front outer edges of the legs and extensions :2, as shown.
(3 designates a top fitting between the legs of plate A and having laterally projecting rounded lugs D D at its inner corners adapt ed to rest in sinks or notches cl d in the adjoining legs of plate A, thereby supporting and hinging the top thereon, and from the rear edge of the top project fingers c c, which underlie the edge of the rear portion of plate A and prevent the top being lifted vertically from the plate unless it is turned up to a nearly vertical position, and the fingers, with lateral ribs on the vertical walls of to, also prevent the front edge of the top dropping down too far. From the front edge of the top depends a vertical flange F, strengthened and stiffened by narrow corn-erflanges f J, de-
pending from the sides of the top near the front thereof. Flange F has a large recess or opening gin it,across which extenda number of parallel guard-rods G G, the ends of which are secured to flanges ff, as indicated inthe drawings. \Vhen the top is down, it can be fastened by bolts H, which are inserted through openings 72 h in the adjoining portions of flanges f and B, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be seen that there is practicall y no bottom to my cover. Thus it can be fitted over any sewer basin or inlet or a Variety of sizes of basins without any trouble, as no con nection between the cover and basin-pipes is necessary. It can also be adjusted vertically to a level with the pavement.
Thecover is supported by top plate A, and flange B serves to prevent the incoming sewerage washing out the earth beneath the plate. The top 0 can be turned back and with it the connected grate-bars, entirely disclosing the top of basin and thereby facilitating its cleaning, or the top can be lifted entirely off after being turned up to verticalposition bntwhen it is down it cannot be displaced by stepping thereon or by force unless it is broken.
The front of the cover may be made straight, rounded, or of other desired configuration, according to the position where it is to be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a cover for catch-basins, the combination of the horizontal approximately U --shaped metal plate having a vertical depending flange near its inner edge with a top fitted between the legs of the plate and having a loose connection therewith at its inner edge and a depending recessed flange on itsfront edge, substantially as specified.
2. In a cover for catch-basins, the combina tion of the approximately U -shaped plate having lateral extensions at its ends and a vertical flange extending around and near its inner edge with a top having lugs and fingers on its rear end and a depending recessed flange at its front edge, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cover for catch-basins, the combination of an approximately U shaped plate having lateral extensions at its ends and a vertical depending flange extending around and near its inner edge with a top having and depending flanges Ffat its front edge, lugs and fingers on its rear edge engaging substantiallyas andforthe purpose set forth. said plate and a depending recessed flange In testimony that I claim the foregoing as at its front end, the corner flanges at the ends my own I affix my signature in presence of 5 thereof, and the transverse rods attached to two witnesses.
said corner flanges, substantially as d escribed.
4. The combination of the plate A, having WILLIAM WHITTEN' lateral extensions a a, sinks d d, and vertical Witnesses: flanges B and Z), with the top 0, having lugs JAMES DUSHANE, [o D engaging sinks cl, fingers c on its rear edge, NEILL G. ORABILL.
