Description

N-FETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT GITFICE. l
MATTHIAS W. BALDWIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBININ G- THE STEAM-WHISTLE WITH THE SAFETY-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,541, dated May 28, 1846.
To all whom t may concerny Be it known that I, MATTHIAS IV. BALD- WIN, engineer and machinist, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful improvement in the manner of operating the lsteam-whistle of a locomotive steam-engine by connecting and combining it with the ordinary safetyvalve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a dome, safety valve, and steam whistle; and Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof through the dome.
A is the dome, and B the steam whistle which is made in the ordinary manner.
C is the main valve seat of the steam valve a; b is the lever of said valve.
The stem and body of the valve a are made hollow and at the lower end thereof there is a puppet valve c opening downward which valve I denominate the whistle valve;
Z is the stem of said valve; e is a lever' which is attached to the stem of the whistle valve,
and by means of which, or of any equivalent device, said valve may be forced down.
Having thus fully described the nature of my improvement in the manner of operating the steam whistle of a locomotive steam engine, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The manner in which I have combined the main valve and the whistle, and arranged the respective parts for operating said whistle by making a perforation through the safety valve and its stem, there being a valve closing the lower end of said opening, which valve is to be operated upon and the respective parts arranged substantially as herein described.
M. W. BALDWIN.
