UZAL HULL AND lVlLLIAM W. MCEWAN, OF BELYIDERE, NEv JERSEY, ASSIGNORS 'FO THE NEV YORK VOOD FIBRE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PROCESS OF MAKING PAPER PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,143, dated January 20, 1891.
Application filed December l2, 1889. Serial No. 338,435. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that we, IIZAL HULL and \YIL man W. MoEwAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Belvidere, in the county ot' Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Making Paper .lailsg and we do declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which AForm a part ot this specification.
Figures 1 and 2 are vertical central sections ofthe apparatus for carrying out our process.
rlhis invention has relation to means for facilitating the manufacture of paper pails; and it consists in the novel process hereinafter set forth,
In carrying out this invention apparatus is employed, and in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated certain devices which may be used.
rlhe letter A designates the base-block or press-head, which usually consists ot' a lower cylindrical portion A', surmounted by the cone-frustuin c, the top c of which has a shallow concave form, and is provided with channels a, converging to the central opening uf, from which leads the drain pipe or leg A, which may extend to the level of the lower surface of thebase-block A. For some pails I may use a basedilock having its upv per portion cylindrical. ljpon the upper portion et' the base-block or press-head is placed the removable holderll, consisting of a sheetmetal covering having` its upper edge turned inward to form a small flange ZJ, and having its lower or skirt portion b extended below the level of the lower edge of the paper-pail blank, so that it can be readily manipulated in lifting the pail from the base-block when iinished. rlhe holderis divided or cleft along one side, as shown.
Upon the concave top ot the base-block is pla-ced awire-cloth guard and strainer-piece C, also oit concave form to correspond with the contour of the top d', the wire-cloth serving to provide a surface upon which the paper of the inwardly-bent portion of the side wa'll and of the bottom center disk, when used, can be pulped and pressed, also providing a strainerguard to prevent the pulp from passing down into the draining-charm els of the press-head, while allowing the water to pass freely through into the saine to be conveyed olt through the pipe A". The small inwardly-turned fiangc l) of the sheet-metal holder B engages the edge ot the concave wire-cloth guard and holds the latter down to its proper position upon the top of the base-block A.
In carrying out the process a hollow tube orfshell D, of wet paper, is pressed in form and placed upon the removable holder B in such a manner to have its upper edge extend above the top of the base-block a sufficient distance to admit of bending or turning said edge downward and inward in afolded or plicated manner toward the center of the top of the base-block. The extension of the tube is then bent down to form the inwardly plicated iiange, which, however, extends more or less toward the center from the bend at d, and sometimes leaves a central opening CZ, which is to be fit-ted with the circular center disk, as at E, the circumscribing edge ot this disk meeting the plicated edge of the iiange portion of the side wall. The side wall is conined to its proper position upon the removable holder by the bandage F, ot sheet metal, which is provided with an extension F of its upper portieri, said extension rising above the level et the top ol the base-block A. rlhe plicated bottoni portion is then pierced or picked, as hereinafter set forth, to reduce it to a homogeneous pulp and intimately coniiningle and lock the iibers, and finally the pulped and picked portion is pressed to give the bottoni proper density and shape. The circular een ter disk ot paper is wet, as is also the plicated flange of the side wall which is bent over and down to meet it, and in the operation of joining parts by pulping, water is freely supplied within the cylindrical chamber bounded by the extension F. In reducing the plicated iiange of the paper side wall and the bottom center disk when used to the IOO proper pulp7 consistencc a perfor-ating tool or n eedle-instrument (indicated at G) is p refcrabl y employed, this being worked 'by a picking action intoV the plicated flange and marginal portion of the center disk until the two are reduced to a pulpy and homogeneous condition.
Il is a cloth-binder, which is applied over the pulped portions and Vheld in a strained and secure manner by the pressure of the conical jacket F. This binder serves to prevent the pulp from working out or bulging under the action of the follower K in the pressingroperation and assists materially in giving the bottom its proper form.
The follower Kis provided with a convex lower or pressure face 71;', which is usually channeled, as at 7a, for drainage, the channels leading to the central aperture K of the follower, which is in communication with the pipe K of a suction-pump. In this manner it is designed to provide with additional means for removing the water expressed t rom the pulped parts during the descent of the follower in pressing said pulped parts to give the proper contour to the bottom of thepail. After the pressure the follower is raised and the bandage F removed. The cloth-binder H is taken o tfand the paper pail lifted from the base-block by means ot' the removable holder B, whereof the skirt or extension b below the angle of the base-block affords a purchase or hold for manipulation. This lioldeig'being cleft, is easily loosened and lifted from the basegblock, and is as readily loosened from and taken out of the finished pail.
Whatwe claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. 'lhe process of making paper pails, consisting in, first, forming a wet-paper tube; second, bending inward the end portion of said wet-paper tube, thereby providing; a plicated fiange portion around the bottom center; third, picking said plicated flange portion, thereby reducing it to a homogeneous pulp the fibers of which are intimately commingled and locked together, and finally pressing the pulped and picked portion to expel the water and give the proper density and shape to the bottom thus provided, substantially as specified.
2. rl`he process of making paper pails, consisting in, first, forming a wet-paper tube; second, bending in the end portion of the same, thereby providing a plicated flange surrounding a central opening and applying within said central opening a bottom center disk of wet paper; third, picking said plif cated flange and bottom center disk, thereby reducing them to a homogeneous pulp the fibers of which are intimately commingled and locked together, and finally pressing the p ulpcd portions to expel the water and give the proper density and shape to the bottom thus provided, substantially as specilied.
In testimony whereot` we affix our signa tures in presence of two witnesses.
UZAL HULL. V i VILLIAM W. MCEVVAN. Titnesseguv i PHILIP C. MAsI, MARY. BOYKIN.
