Description

1 vvv' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C. F. HUNTER, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN I-IANDLES Foa FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,994, dated August 30, 1864; antedated August I6, 1864.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known th at I, G. F. HUNTER, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michi gan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
rJhis invention relates to that class of filehandles tha-t has to be used when the article to be tiled will not admit 0f the handle being driven directly on the shank of the file, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon, with figures numbering from l to 5, of which- Figure l is a perspective view exhibiting its several parts, viz: lile A, clamps B B, bolts C and E, ferrule F, handle G, nut H, pivot D, recesses L L, and projections M M. Fig.2 exhibits the handle G reversed from its position seen in Fig. 1, and also exhibiting the dotted lines N`N. Fig. 3 exhibits the manner in which the bolt E passes through the handle G, and also the recesses L L and hole O in its head. Fig. 4exhibits one of the clamps B, removed from the handle G, exhibiting its projection M and holes O and P. Fig. 5 exhibits the bolt C with its nut removed from the handle G.
The clamps B B are attached by means of the bolt C, passing through the holes O O seen in the center. lhe handles E and clamps B B are attached by means of the pivot D, as is clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
I will describe the operationv of my file-l handle as follows: When a person wishes to attach it to a file, he turns the handle G on its pivot D to the position of the dotted lines N N, Fig. 2, which in turn allows the projection M ou the top of clamp B to drop into the recesses L L in the head of the bolt E, which in turn opens the lower end of the clamps B B sufficient to slip on the shank of the file, then by turning the handle G to the position seen in either l or 2 throws the projections M M out of the recesses L L, which spreads the tops of clamps B B apart, causing the lower ends to grasp the shanks of the file, all of which is clearly seen in Figs. l and 2.
After thus having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A file-handle constructed as above described, with its clamps B B, bolt U, bolt E, and handle G, for the purposes set forth and described.
C. F. HUNTER.
