DOOR-SECURER.

SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 438,626, dated October 21, 1890.

Be it known that I, JAMES M. KERN, residing at- Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of Test Virginia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in door-securers, and has for its object to produce an improved door-securer which shall be simple in construction, effective in operation, cheap to manufacture, and easy of application to a door.

A further object is to so construct and arrange a door-securer that the door may be quickly and easily locked and the picking of the lock from outside the door rendered impossible.

Vith these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front view of a door having my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view on the line 0c x of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a separate view of one of the securing-plates. Fig. 4 is a view of the key.

A represents a door-frame, to which a door B is hinged and adapted when closed to abut against the jamb a orto a strip projecting inwardly therefrom. The jamb adjacent to the free edge of the door is provided with a recess b of proper size and shape to receive a securing plate or block C, which is secured in said recess by means of suitable fastening devices. The block or plate C is provided with a curved projection cl, having a recess e therein; or the recess e may be formed by means of two ears projecting outwardly from the block or plate C. The plate or block C is provided on opposite sides of the recess e with recesses or notches f g, the latter exposing a portion h of the door-jamb.

ing-plate C', similar in every respect to the plate or block C. When the door is closed, the recesses c of the two plates will be in line with each other, the recesses f will form an ellipse, and the recesses g will form a circle. A key D is adapted to be inserted between the plates C C', the free end of the key resting in the recesses g. At a point near the free inner end of the key, at diametrically opposite sides thereof, are lugs or pins h, which when the key is turned are adapted to enter the recesses c in the plates C C', and thus lock the door to the jamb. The cross-bar t' of the key D is provided on one end with an enlarged portionj, which when the key is turned to lock the door serves as a weight to maintain the key in proper position and prevent it-s being turned from the outside.

A door-securer constructed as above set forth is very simple, effective in the performance of its functions, cheap to manufacture, and easy of application to a door.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with a pair of plates each having two recesses, one recess being deeper than the other, the shallow recesses being for the shank of the key and the deeper ones for the lugs or pins on said key, of a key having diametrically-opposite lugs or pins, substantially as setV forth.

2. The combination, with a pair of plates, one for the door and the other for the doorframe, each plate having two recesses, the inner recess being deeper than the outer one, of a key for said plates, the said key having diametrically-opposite pins or lugs adapted to rest within the deeper recess and hold the door locked, and a depending weight located in a plane at right angles to the lugs or pins for holding the latter horizontally, substantiallyA as set forth.
