Description

J. B. TINKBLPAUGH.
v RAME PASTBNBR.
M# j Ma/- Y MM/Magma UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. B. TINKELPAUGH, OF HASTINGS, MINNESOTA.
" HAM-FASTEMNG.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,651 dated May 10,1864.
To all whom it may concerm. v
Be it`known that I, J. B. TINKELPAUGH, of Hastings, in the county of Dakota and State ot' Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement iu Adjustable Hame- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare t-iat the following is a full and exact descriptionv thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference markt d thereon, forming a part of this my specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my iluproved adjustable hame fastener; Fig. 2, a
.cross'seetion5 Fig. 3, a plan view, and Fig. 4 a front elevation.
The object of my invention is not only to provide 'the means'where'by harness-haines may be readily adjusted and secured to their collars, but also secure its operative or work.
ing parts against derangement from the collection of dirt or other refuse matter within the implement, while at the same time great strength is secured at a point which receives a heavy draft of the animal up n which it is Y in use.
For this purpose l construct a hollow or tubularmetallic support, A, open at both ends, into one end 'of which the hook b is screwed, as clearly shown in Fig'. 1, while the opposite end receives a sliding rod, c, with its outer eX- tremity, hooked, as at b', to correspond with the hook b. The hooked rod c is made to closely tit within the tube A, and when inserted within4 the tube to its greatest extent, occupies about three-fourths of the length of the tube. ln the upper portion of rod c notches, as at i, are cnt therein, into which a catch, k, is made to engage by the operation of the spring l, as indicated in Fig. 1, whe-never the rod is inserted within the tube, the poi-nt of the catch k, as at k', passing through a suitable openingr in the side of the tube A in order to seat' itself in the nocthes of the rod c within the tube, duringthe act of insertion or withdrawal of the rod.
As clearly indicated in Fig. 1, a longitudinaln, as represented. 1
Thus constructed, it will be observed that in.`
the operation of my improved hame-fastener tha-t portion of the tube A which receives the rod c is so inclosed as to practically protect 'itself from theentrance of dirt andrei' use matter, the collection of which in the notches i, or in contact with the point k of the catch 7c, would impede or disarrange its proper workiii'g.
lt will also be seen that the main orsupporting portion of my heme-fastener, being made of tubular form, imparts great strength to the Whole'device, thus avoiding a liability to break under a heavy shaft, and that, as the hook b is constructed of a material separate from the -inain body or support A, it can, if broken, have its place supplied by a new hook `without necessitating the loss or throw ing aside of the niain portion -A4 of the hamefastening.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The tubular support'A, in combination with the. notched rod c, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
2. A metallic tube, A, for the purpose cfa support and protection to the operativ'e parts of a heme-fastener, substantially as described.
3. The removable hook b, in combination with the tube A, substantially as described.
J; B. T-INKELPAUGH.
