No. 677,732, filed Oct. 24, 1967, which in turn is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 447,895, filed Apr. 13, 1965, both are now abandoned.
This invention relates to a novel method for soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet by spraying the stocking-clad feet with a cosmetic aerosol composition consisting solely of ethanol, hexachlorophene, perfume and an aerosol propellent in specific proportions.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION After being on their feet for prolonged periods of time, many persons, and especially women, experience the feeling of what is commonly referred to as tired feet. To relieve this feeling, the person usually sits down, removes the shoes and promotes blood circulation in the feet by exercising the toes until such time as the feet feel more or less normal again. However, this procedure is time-consuming and, in the case of those persons most likely to experience the feeling of tired feet, such as sales clerks and the like, there is often no opportunity for several hours to obtain relief by this procedure.
Methods are known for providing quick analgesic relief from pain normally associated with tired feet by spraying the feet with an analgesic aerosol composition. Such a method is described in US. Pat. No. 2,975,097 to Modderno, for example; the analgesic aerosol composition disclosed therein comprises, as essential ingredients, a liquid hydrophilic carrier, an analgesic aminosalicylate, an analgesic alkyl ester of aminobenzoic acid, an antibacterial chlorinated phenol, and a propellent gas.
However, such compositions have the disadvantage that they evaporate very slowly and consequently leave the feet feeling wet and clammy for a prolonged period of time; moreover, such compositions to be effective must be applied directly to the skin of the feet.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of quickly soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet which does not require the availability of seating facilities.
Another object of the instant invention is to provide a method of quickly and effectively soothing, cooling and refreshing tired feet with a composition which does not contain topical analgesics.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a method for quickly soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet with a rapidly evaporating cosmetic aerosol composition which can be effectively applied through the stockings.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds.
THE INVENTION The above objects and advantages are achieved by spraying stocking-clad tired feet with an aerosol composition consisting solely of ethanol, hexachlorophene, perfume and a propellent in specific proportions.
The ethanol content of the aerosol composition may vary between 29.4 and 29.7 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the composition. However, the
presence of 29.55 percent by weight of ethanol in the aerosol composition is most advantageous and is preferred.
The hexachlorophene content of the aerosol composition may vary between 0.15 and 0.30 percent by weight, but the preferred amount is 0.3 percent by weight.
The perfume content may vary between 0.15 and 0.3 percent by weight, but the preferred amount is 0.3 percent by weight. The nature or odor of the perfume component is not critical; the only criterion for this component being that it be completely miscible and compatible with the other components of the composition.
The balance of the aerosol composition consists of an aerosol propellent of the conventional type, such as trichlorofluoromethane or dichlorodifluoromethane. More preferred, however, is a mixture of equal parts of trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane.
The following example illustrates a preferred cometic aerosol composition which is used in the method according to the present invention. It should be understood, however, that the method of the present invention is not limited solely to the use of this particular composition.
The parts are parts by weight.
EXAMPLE The aerosol composition was compounded from the following ingredients:
Ethanol 29.55 parts Hexachlorophene 0.15 do. Perfume 0.30 do. Aerosol propellent mixture consisting of equal parts of trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane q.s.ad 1000 parts Compounding procedure:
The hexachlorophene and the perfume were dissolved in the ethanol, the solution was filled into an aerosol container provided with a suitable aerosol spray valve, and then the propellent mixture was added, either under pressure or refrigeration.
For the purpose of soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet it was merely necessary to slip off the shoes and spray the stocking-clad feet with a few seconds burst of the aerosol spray. Within seconds after spraying, the feet felt refreshed, cool and comfortable, and this pleasant sensation persisted over a long period of time, even when the shoes were put on again right after spraying the feet. The entire procedure took onlya fraction of a minute and could be repeated as often as required. It was not necessary for the user to find a place to sit down.
It is well known that the evaporation of a volatile liquid from a body surface will cause a cooling sensation for as long as the evaporation continues. Thus, the application of a mixture of dichlorodifluoromethane and trichlorofluoromethane to a body surface could be expected to cause a very fleeting cooling sensation, since these propellents have very low boiling points and evaporate within a very few seconds after application. It could not be anticipated or expected, however, that the analgesic-free composition according to the present invention, when applied to stocking-clad feet, would produce a cooling and soothing sensation, nor that this sensation would last for an extended period of time. Variations of the composition beyond the limits set forth above will not producethe lasting cooling and soothing effects.
The rate of evaporation of the cosmetic aerosol composition according to the present invention was compared with that of the analgesic spray described in Example III of US. Pat. No. 2,975,097 to Modderno, as follows:
A pressurized analgesic foot spray was prepared in accordance with Example III of the Modderno patent. The proportions of ingredients and procedure were as follows:
The following were mixed in a one-liter beaker:
Salicylic acid USP Diethylamine Distilled Water This mixture was weighed, then heated for 3 hours at 80C with stirring and allowed to cool to room temperature. The beaker and its contents were re-weighed and distilled water was added to restore the evaporative loss. Thereafter the following were added in turn:
The resulting mixture was stirred until homogeneous and then the following were added:
lsopropanol 99% 277 gm Distilled Water 10.5 do. Antara C-630 25 do. Glycerine 25 do. Propylparasept 0.5 do.
The final mixture thus obtained was filtered through a glass wool plug and then filled into 6 oz. aerosol cans and pressurized with an equal weight of 25 75 mixture .of Freon 12 and Freon 11.
A pressurized cosmetic foot spray was prepared in accordance with the above Example of the present invention.
The rate of evaporation or drying time of the two samples, that is, Modderno Ill and the foot spray of the instant invention, was determined. The pressurized spray in each case, after shaking, was sprayed from the can onto the surface of a wide aluminum dish. The spray can was weighed before and after spraying to obtain the weight of product used. Approximately the same weight of product was sprayed on the surface of the dish in both cases. The residue deposited by the foot spray of the invention was not wet and sticky. The residue deposited by Modderno III was very sticky and felt wet to the touch.
It is clear from the data shown above that the cosmetic foot spray according to the invention evaporates much more rapidly than the spray of Modderno III and leaves no appreciable residue, whereas the analgesic spray of Modderno III leaves a non-volatile residue of 10-15 percent, even after exposure to the air for several hours.
While the present invention has been illustrated with the aid of a certain specific embodiment thereof, it will be readily apparent to others skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to this particular embodiment, and that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The method of soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet, which comprises spraying the stocking-clad feet with an aerosol spray composition consisting of 29.4 to 29.7 percent by weight ethanol, 0.15 to 0.3 percent by weight hexachlorophene, 0.15 to 0.3 percent by weight perfume, and the balance a mixture of equal parts of trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane.
2. The method of soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet according to claim 1, wherein said aerosol spray composition consists of 29.55 percent by weight ethanol, 0.15 percent by weight hexachlorophene, 0.30 percent perfume, and the balance a mixture of equal parts of trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane.

1. THE METHOD OF SOOTHING, COOLING AND REFRESHING STOCKINGCLAD TIRED FEET, WHICH COMPRISES SPRAYING THE STOCKING-CLAD FEET WITH AN AEROSOL SPRAY COMPOSITION CONSISTING OF 29.4 TO 29.7 PERCENT BY WEIGHT ETHANOL, 0.15 TO 0.3 PERCENT BY WEIGHT HEXACHLOROPHENE, 0.15 TO 0.3 PERCENT BY WEIGHT PERFUME, AND THE BALANCE A MIXTURE OF EQUAL PARTS OF TRICHLOROFLUOROMETHANE AND DICHLORODIFLUOROMETHANE.
2. The method of soothing, cooling and refreshing stocking-clad tired feet according to claim 1, wherein said aerosol sPray composition consists of 29.55 percent by weight ethanol, 0.15 percent by weight hexachlorophene, 0.30 percent perfume, and the balance a mixture of equal parts of trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane.
