Primary Examiner-William T. Dixson, Jr. Attorney, Agent, or FirmRobert M. Dunning; Jerry F. Best [5 7] ABSTRACT A carton is provided with a window in one wall extending to an adjoining wall. A clock or other article includes a base resting upon said adjoining wall and projecting partially through said window. A transparent sheet of shrink film is anchored to the inside of said carton, and is pocketed to enclosed the projecting part of the article.
1 Claim, 5 Drawing Figures 1 DISPLAY CARTON BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Numerous types of packages have, been produced using a plastic film of the so-called shrink film type to 7 hold the product inplace. Most such packages comprise a pair of cards having window apertures in one or both of the cards. A sheet of film is applied to the card and a pocket is formed in the film. The product is placed in the pocket, and the cards are sealed together with the product being visible through the film from one or both sides of the card. Other packages have been provided in which a pair of cards is provided or, in some instances, a single card is provided. A relatively rigid bubble is formed of a plastic, a and marginally secured to the card.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention resides in the provision of a carton having a window aperture in one wall thereof. A panel of shrink film is adhered to the carton walls encircling the aperture. A pocket is formed in the film and an object such as a clock or the like is placed in the carton to project partially therefrom. After the carton is sealed, heat is applied to shrink the film against the dial of the clock. In view of the fact that the clock projects through the opening, the clock is very effectively displayed and may be seen from various angles.
A feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a carton of. the type described for containing a clock or similar articles having a base portion which supports the clock dial in a slightly rearwardly and upwardly inclined position. As a result, the base projects forwardly to a much greater extent than the top of the clock. In other words, the clock dial slopes upwardly and rearwardly from the base portion of the clock to the upper end thereof. Accordingly, the forward portion of the base projects through the aperture and the pocket is relatively deep at the base and relatively shallow in the area covering the top' of the dial.
A further feature of the invention resides in a package of the type described in which the base of the clock rests upon a wall of the carton and the aperture is provided in the adjoining panel and extends to the wall against which the clock base rests. As a result, the forwardly projecting portion of the clock base assists in holding the carton errect when the carton is put into display position.
A further feature of the present invention resides in a carton of the type described in which the film is anthe film is anchored to two adjoining carton walls which are in right angular relation when the package is completed.
These and other objects and novel features of the present invention will be more clearly and fully set forth in the following Specification and Claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the completed package.
chored to the apertured panel as well as to the carton panel against which the base of the clock engages. Thus FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view through a package on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, the clock being shown in elevation.
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the carton, the position of the section being indicated by the line 33 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic view of the blank from which the carton is formed.
FIG. 5 is a diagrammatic view of a portion of the blank after the plastic sheet has been secured thereto.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION The carton A is formed of the blank best illustrated in FIG. 4 of the drawings. The blank includes a front panel 10 which is hingedly connected to a bottom panel 11 along a fold line 12. The bottom panel 11 is hingedly connected to a back panel 13 along a fold line 14. The back panel 13 is hingedly connected along a fold line 15 to an inner top panel 16. An outer top panel 17 is hingedly connected to the upper edge of the front panel 10 along a fold line 19.
Corner flaps 21) are hingedly connected to the sides of the top panel 16 along fold lines 21. In a similar manner, corner flaps 22 are hingedly connected to the ends of the outer top panel 17 along fold lines 23. Side wall panels 24 are hingedly connected to the sides of the front panel 10 along parallel fold lines 25. Side wall panels 26 are foldably connected to the rear wall panel 13 along parallel fold lines 27. A corner forming member 29 is hingedly connected to the lower end of each side wall 24 along a fold line 30. This corner forming member being also connected to the lower ends of the side walls 26 along fold lines 31. Diagonal fold lines 32 extend in converging relation from the lower corners of the front panel 10 and rear panel 13 and come to an apex and the edge 33 of each of the corner members member 29. These fold lines divide the area of the corner forming members 29 into three triangular areas, one of which is connected to the bottom panel 11 and the others of which are connected to the side walls 24 and 26 respectively.
Locking tongues 34 are hingedly connected to the upper ends of the side walls 24 along fold lines 35. Similar locking tongues 36 are foldably connected to the upper ends of the side walls 26 along fold lines 37. Locking slots 39 are provided intersecting the fold lines 23 to accommodate the locking tongues 34. Similar slots 40 extend along the fold lines 21 to accommodate the locking tongues 36. The slots 39 and 40 extend into the corner flaps 22 and 20 so as to form openings in the corner flaps to facilitate the insertion of the locking tongues.
An aperture 41 of generally keyhole shaped form is provided in the front panel 10. The periphery 42 of the aperture 41 is mainly arcuate, but includes reversely curved portions 43, the ends of which are connected by a cut line 44 whichis perferably adjacent to and parallel to the fold line 12. The cut line 44 is preferably slightly to one side of the fold line 12 so that the aperture 41 extends slightly into the bottom panel 11.
While the blank is still flat, a sheet of shrink film 45 is adhered to the inner surface of the front panel 10 and to the surface of the bottom panel 11 so as to be sealed entirely about the aperture 41. Also, while the blank is flat, the film 45 is heated and formed in a mold to provide a pocket of the proper size and shape to accommodate the front surface of a clock such as B.
In forming the carton, the top walls 16 and 17 are folded upwardly into right angular relation to the front and rear panels to which they are hinged, and the corner flaps 22 and 20 are folded inwardly to extend along the fold lines 25 and 27. The locking tongues, 34 and 36, are bent upwardly into right angular relation to the side walls 24 and 26, and the side walls are then folded upwardly along the fold lines 25 and 27 the locking tongues extending into the corresponding slots 39 and 40 to lock the side wall in right angular relation to the front and rear panels.
As the side walls 24 and 26 are erected, the corner forming members 29 are also folded upwardly. With the carton in this condition, the clock B is inserted into the pocket in the film 45, the base portion of the clock and the dial of the clock projecting through the aperture 41. The'carton may then be closed by folding the triangular areas of the corner forming members which are secured along the fold lines 46 to the sides of the bottom panel inwardly against the bottom panel 11, this action swinging the front and rear panels 10 and 13 toward one another. The side walls 24 are folded outwardly of the side walls 26 and the top wall 17 is folded above the top panel 16. The inner and outer side walls may be secured together by applying a strip of hot metal adhesive or the like between these surfaces, and by applying heat to the'walls to reactivate the adhesive.
As the clock projects through the aperture 41, the forwardly extending portion of the clock base 46 assists in stabilizing the package. Obviously the thickness of the paperboard and film are exaggerated in FIG. 2 but actually the base is closely spaced from the bottom surface of the bottom panel 11.
In accordance with the Patent Statutes, l have described the principles of construction and operation of my improvement in DISPLAY CARTON; while I have endeavored to'set forth the best embodiments thereof. I desire to have it understood that obvious changes may be made within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
