DISPLAY DEVICE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION l. Field of the Invention This invention relates to a display device and more particularly to an advertising sign for convenient removable attachment to the metallic surface of a vehicle, or building without in any way affecting the vehicle or building, and for permitting interchange of various types of advertising material.
2. Description of the Prior Art Various types of vehicle stickers, posters and the like have been used in the past which usually use an adhesive or metallic means for attachment to the vehicle. Alternatively, a portion of the vehicle is provided with a permanently mounted frame for receiving advertising material. When stickers and posters are used, they are attached with a strong adhesive which makes it quite difficult to remove all portions of the sticker or poster from the vehicle or building after they have served their purpose. Further, the use of paper posters and stickers often cause excessive litter, adversely affecting the environment and causing pollution.
In the past, various attempts have been made to enclose advertising and display materialsin frames. However, these are often costly and are a permanent fixture on the vehicle or building.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention overcomes the disadvantages of posters and stickers and permanently mounted frames for advertising and display by providing a readily attachable and removable weather proof display device which can be easily selfsecured to the metallic surface of a vehicle or building, and when it has served its purpose, can be easily removed without in any way affecting the surface of the building or vehicle. The weather proof aspect of the invention, prevents the indicia sheet, such as a poster, from being exposed to the elements, consequently restricting litter.
The structure of this invention features the use of a mounting sheet having magnetized rubber-like material formed of any suitable plastic such as vinyl or the like, and which may be made of any'suitable size and configuration preferably rectangular in shape, and which has a transparent face sheet, heat-sealed thereto. A slot is provided in the mounting sheet for insertion and removal of an indicia sheet carrying the advertisement or display.
Still further objects and features of this invention reside in the provision of a display device that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, thereby permitting wide use and distribution which will reduce waste and pollution and thereby aid the advertiser, yet which is attractive in appearance and easy to handle.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this display device, preferred embodiments of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, by way of example only, wherein:
BRIEF'DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an elevational view of the inventionshown attached to a vehicle;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged elevational view of the display device with parts thereof being broken away to show other parts in detail;
FIG. 3 is an enlarged section view taken along the line 3-3 in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken along the plane of line 4-4 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken along the plane of line 5-5 in FIG. 2;
FIG. 6 is an elevational view of a modified form of the invention;
FIG. 7 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken along the plane of line 7-7 in FIG. 6;
FIG. 8 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken along the plane of line 8-8 in FIG. 6;
FIG. 9 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken along the plane of line 9-9 in FIG. 6;
FIG. 10 is a partial rear elevational view with parts being broken away to show details of construction of the device;
FIG. 11 is partial exploded view showing parts in section;
FIG. 12 is a partial elevational view showing a closure device for the access opening of the display device.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION With continuing reference to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views and with specific attention directed to the embodiment of FIGS. 1 through 5, reference numeral 20 is used to generally designate a display device constructed in accordance with the concepts of this invention, and which is selfsecurable to any type of vehicle 22, such as the automobile shown. The display device is equally adaptable for use on buses, trucks, trains, and on other vehicles and buildings having suitable metallic surfaces. The display device 20 is especially adapted for posters, for advertising wares and services, for political announcements, and to provide information as may be desired.
The display device 20 includes a mounting sheet 24. The mounting sheet 24 is of a two-ply construction including a backing member 26 in the form of a sheet of any suitable plastic material such as vinyl or other plastic which is suitable colored and attractive in appearance. The other ply 28 of the mounting sheet is of a magnetized rubber-like material such as magnetized vinyl or other magnetized plastic or rubber-like material which is used to self-attach the display device 20 to the metallic surface of a vehicle or building. A transparent face sheet 30 is heat-sealed as at 32 along its periphery to the mounting sheet 24 and is preferably of less dimensions than the mounting sheet, to leave a peripheral border or frame. A slot 34 is provided in the mounting sheet 24 for facilitating the insertion of an indicia sheet 36 through the slot 34 which extends transversely of the mounting sheet 24 and terminates short of the periphery of the face sheet and is inwardly spaced from the closest adjacent end 38 of the display device whereby the last end of the indicia sheet 36 may be tucked safely into the opposite side of the slot 34 from the balance of the indicia sheet, forming a secure positioning for the indicia sheet 36. As can be readily understood, the indicia sheet 36 can be readily. removed and replaced as desired. The sheet is inserted in the direction of the arrow 40 as shown in FIG. 5.
Referring now to the embodiment as is shown in FIGS. 6 through 11, herein the display device l20 is provided with a mounting sheet 124 having a peripheral recess 144 therein closely adjacent to the peripheral edge 146 of the mounting sheet 124. The transparent face sheet 130 is heat-sealed to the mounting sheet as at 132, and the mounting sheet includes the backing member 126 in whose recess 144 strips 148 of magnetized material are inserted. The magnetized material 148 has a self-sticking type adhesive material 150 coated thereon for adhesively bonding the strips 148 in the recess 144 in the manner best seen in FIGS. 10 and 11. A slot 134 is provided for insertion and removal of an indicia sheet corresponding to and of the same type as the indicia sheet 36.
As shown in FIG. 12, a slot fastener closure 50 may be provided in lieu of slot 34. Of course, such is equally adaptable for use in lieu of the slot 130.
A latitude of modification, substitution and change is intended in the foregoing disclosure, and in some instances, some features of the present invention may be employed with a corresponding use of other features.
I claim: 1. A display device comprising a flexible mounting sheet and flexible transparent face sheet secured to said mounting sheet in overlying relationship thereto, a removable and replaceable indicia sheet between said mounting sheet and said face sheet, said mounting sheet having an access opening therein for facilitating removal and replacement of said indicia sheet, said mounting sheet includes a backing member having magnetic means for attaching said device to a metallic surface, said access opening being spaced inwardly of the periphery of said mounting sheet and said face sheet and extending transversely of said mounting sheet, said access opening being of a dimension slightly less than the transverse dimension of said face sheet, said magnetic means being a magnetized rubberlike material affixed to said backing member, said backing member having a recess therein extending thereabout adjacent the periphery thereof, said magnetized material being in form of at least one strip seated in said recess, and means bonding said strip to said backing sheet.
2. A display device according to claim 1 including a fastener closure for said access opening.
3. A display device according to claim 2 wherein said access opening is located in said flexible transparent face sheet.
