Abstract

The invention embodies a table cover consisting of a sheet of non-absorbent material adapted to overlie a table and depend at its edges about the table and which is formed with a plurality of separate flaps extending peripherally about a central portion of the sheet and adapted to overlie the edge portions of the table. The flaps are disposed in close separated relation at their adjacent ends whereby the flaps may be independently raised for convenience in inserting the edge portions of an auxiliary centerpiece in covering relation with the central portion of the sheet and for cleaning out the recesses formed by the flaps and the cover.

The flaps are disposed in close separated relation at their adjacent ends whereby the flaps may be independently raised for convenience in inserting the edge portions of an auxiliary centerpiece in covering relation with the central portion of the sheet and for cleaning out the recesses formed by the flaps and the cover.

2 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures 1 1 TABLE COVER This invention relates to a table cover and more particularly to an improvement on the table cover and centerpiece patented in my US. Pat. No. 2,809,466 issued Oct. 15, 1957.

In my patented construction of table cover and centerpiece, the cover was made up of a plurality of sections of flexible material and with a flap extending continuously about a central portion of the cover and forming a recess therewith for receiving the peripheral edge portions of the auxiliary centerpiece so that the same overlies the central portions of the cover. The recess formed by the flap is of continuous formation since the flap is secured to the cover continuously about the periphery of the central portions thereof. This renders the flap relatively rigid which necessitates the distortion and binding of the flap to effect insertion of the edge portion of the auxiliary centerpiece in the recess. Furthermore crumbs and spilled food and the like accumulate in the recess which must be cleaned out. The continuous formation of the flap necessitates the lifting and distortion thereof in order to clean out the pocket formed by the recess.

The present invention contemplates a table cover consisting of a single sheet of non-absorptive material and which is provided with a plurality of separate flaps extending peripherally about the peripheral edge of a central portion of the cover. The flaps are disposed in close separated relation at their adjacent ends whereby the flaps may be independently raised for convenience in inserting the edge portions of an auxiliary centerpiece and for cleaning out the recesses formed by the flaps and the cover.

Still another object ofthe invention is to form the cover of a single sheet of material and with the flaps made up of lengths of the material which are doubled over and secured to the cover by sewing or other securing means and with a strip of stiffening material arranged between the plies of each flap throughout the extent thereof so that each flap may be raised its entire length for cleaning the underside of the flap as well as the cover.

With the foregoing and other objects in view reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred form of the invention is illustrated.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a table cover constructed in accordance with the invention and showing an auxiliary cover in position thereon with the edges thereof arranged under the flaps.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken approximately on line 2-2 of FIG. 1 and showing the same on a table.

FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing one of the flaps in overlying relation with the auxiliary cover and in raised position in broken lines.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the cover is of any desired shape for covering a table and the like and includes a single length of washable non-porous or non-absorptive material. The cover includes a central portion 11 and an edge portion 12 with a plurality of flaps 13 extending peripherally about the central portion 11. The central portion 11 is adapted to overlie the top of a table A with the edge portion 12 depending thereabout. The flaps 13 are each made of a length of the non-porous or non-absorptive material which is doubled over into two

14 and 15 and secured together and to the cover by a line of stitching 16 or other securing means with the edges of the plies interned between the flap and the cover. The flaps 13 are arranged in end to end relation so as to encompass the central portion 11 and with the flaps free or unconnected at their ends to adjacent flaps whereby each flap may be swung into-elevated or raised relation as shown in FIG. 3 of the drawings for cleaning the cover and the underside of the flaps.

The flaps 13 are disposed in inwardly extending relation so as to provide a recess between each flap and the central portion 11 of the cover 10 for receiving the edge portion of an auxilary centerpiece 17 in covering relation with the central portion 11 of the cover. The flaps 13 are mitered at their ends by stitching or other securing means-and with a strip of stiffening material 19 arranged between the plies of each flap.

As illustrated, the flaps 13 surround a rectangular shaped central portion 11 with each of the flaps extend.- ing in a straight line along one side thereof but the central portion 11 may be of circular formation for covering a circular table topwith the flaps of arcuate formation together surrounding the central portion.

There is thus provided a table cover which is of integral formation to overlie the top of a table and to depend about the sides thereof and with independent flaps secured to the cover for receiving thereunder the edgesof an auxiliary cover in overlying relation with the cover and the top of the table. The arrangement of flaps permits of the convenient emplacement and removal of the auxiliary cover as well as cleaning the cover and the undersides of the flaps. The auxiliary cover 17 may be of relatively inexpensive material so that the'same maybe disposed of when soiled.

What is claimed is:

l. A table cover consisting of a length of nonabsorbent material and including a central portion adapted to overlie the top of a table and an edge portion adapted to depend about the sides thereof, a plu' rality of flaps secured to said central portion in end to end relation adjacent the edges of the top of the table and projecting inwardly therefrom, said flaps being of two ply thickness of said non-absorbent material and each of said flaps being free and unsecured at its ends to adjacent flaps whereby each of said flaps may be independently raised from flat formation into upright relation for facilitating the emplacement and removal of an auxiliary cover adapted to overlie said central portion and extend under said flaps at its edges, and whereby said flaps may be raised for cleaning the cover under the flaps and the underside of the flaps.

A table cover as set forth in claim 1 in which said cover consists of an integral sheet of said nonabsorbent material and each of the flaps are secured to said cover by a line of stitching extending through the plies and the material of the cover and a stiffening strip of material is arranged between the plies of each strip.

Claims

1. A table cover consisting of a length of non-absorbent material and including a central portion adapted to overlie the top of a table and an edge portion adapted to depend about the sides thereof, a plurality of flaps secured to said central portion in end to end relation adjacent the edges of the top of the table and projecting inwardly therefrom, said flaps being of two ply thickness of said non-absorbent material and each of said flaps being free and unsecured at its ends to adjacent flaps whereby each of said flaps may be independently raised from flat formation into upright relation for facilitating the emplacement and removal of an auxiliary cover adapted to overlie said central portion and extend under said flaps at its edges, and whereby said flaps may be raised for cleaning the cover under the flaps and the underside of the flaps.

A table cover as set forth in claim 1 in which said cover consists of an integral sheet of said non-absorbent material and each of the flaps are secured to said cover by a line of stitching extending through the plies and the material of the cover and a stiffening strip of material is arranged between the plies of each strip.
