An elongated sectional concrete road curb for positioning, together with other curbs of identical configuration, in a row in interconnected end-to-end relationship on an asphalt layer to serve as a border between a roadway and a sidewalk lying at a higher level than the roadway. Fastening means are embedded in the curb at the molding thereof so as to protrude from one side face and one end face of the curb to engage keys driven into the asphalt layer. One end face of the curb has a protruding tongue while the other end face of the curb is formed with a recess of a shape complementary to that of the tongue.

Fastening means are embedded in the curb at the molding thereof so as to protrude from one side face and one end face of the curb to engage keys driven into the, asphalt layer. One end face of the curb has a protruding tongue while the other end face of the curb is formed with a recess of a shape complementary to that of the tongue.

SECTIONAL CONCRETE ROAD CURBS FOR USE AS BORDERS FOR INSTANCE BETWEEN ROADWAYS AND SIDEWALKS This invention relates to an elongated sectional concrete road curb having two side faces and two end faces and adapted to be positioned, together with other curb units of identical configuration, in a row in interconnected end-to-end relationship on an asphalt layer so as to form a border for instance between a roadway and a sidewalk lying at a higher level than the roadway.
Prior art concrete road curbs serving the purpose outlined above have hitherto been adhesively adhered to the asphalt layer of the roadway extending beneath the curbs. This adhering work is time-consuming and circumstantial and does not always produce a reliable anchoring of the curbs. Besides, the adhering work cannot be carried out when the asphalt layer of the roadway and/or the lower side of the curb units are wet, e.g. because of rain.
The present invention has for its object to eliminate these disadvantages and to this end provides a concrete curb of the type outlined above, in which fastening means embedded in the curb at the molding thereof protrude from one side face and one end face thereof to engage keys driven into the asphalt layer, and in which one end face has a protruding tongue while the other end face of the curb is formed with a recess of a shape complementary to that of the tongue.
To reduce the risk of the concrete curb being overturned when it is used in a continuous border the fastening means protruding from one end face of the curb should be disposed at a larger distance from that'side face of the curb at which the other fastening means protrude than from the other side face of the curb.
The fastening means preferably are flat iron members partly embedded in the curb unit and formed outside said unit with holes for anchoring keys.
An embodiment of the invention will be more fully described hereinbelow with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a vertical section of a continuous border formed by concrete curb units according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of such a concrete curb unit.
in the embodiment illustrated use is made of several sectional concrete road curbs l prefabricated from concrete and having the same configuration to provide a border of the type described. A curb unit is shown in plan view in FIG. 2 and from one end in the cross section according to FlG. 1, with two opposite side faces 2, 3 and two end faces 4, 5. Fastening means 6 in the form of flat iron members embedded in the concrete material of the curb unit protrude from one side face 3 thereof. The ends of the flat iron members protruding from the curb unit lie flush with the underside 8 of the unit, and holes 7 are formed in said ends. A recess 9 in the form of a truncated pyramid is provided in the end face 4 of the curb unit adjacent the underside 8 thereof, while a conforming projection or tongue 10 is provided at the end face 5 of said unit. A fixation lug ll embedded in the concrete material of the curb unit protrudes from the lower edge of the end face 4, and a hole 12 is formed in said lug 11. A shallow recess 13 is formed in the underside 8 of the curb unit close to the end face 5 thereof.
At the use of sectional concrete curbs 1 described in the foregoing for erection of a continuous border an asphalt layer 14 is first placed on the road foundation. On each side of the roadway said asphalt layer is made so much wider than the roadway as corresponds to at least the width of the curbing 1 and the protruding portions of the fastening means 6.
A first curb unit 1 is then disposed on the asphalt layer 14 with its side face 2 turned to the roadway and in immediate proximity to the actual side boundary of the roadway. The curb is anchored in the asphalt layer 1 by means of three headed keys l5 driven through the holes 7 of the fastening means 6 into the asphalt layer and by means of a headed key 16 driven through the hole 12 of the fastening lug 11 into the asphalt layer. The second curb unit 1 is then placed with its end face 5 turned to the end face 4 of the curb unit already fixed to the asphalt layer 14 and is pushd towards said first curb unit until the facing ends of the two curb units lie closely spaced, the projection or tongue 10 penetrating into the recess 9 in the curb unit already fixed to the asphalt layer and the fastening lug ll of said curb unit being accommodated in the recess 13 of said second curb unit. The latter curb unit is then anchored in the asphalt layer 14 by means of keys l5 and 16 in the manner already described. Further curb units 1 are then disposed in the described manner until the desired long row of curbing 1 extends in end-to-end relationship along the roadway. Gravel 17 is then placed and levelled on the side of the curbing l remote from the roadway, and a sidewalk coating 18 is spread onto the gravel to form a sidewalk which lies at a higher level than the roadway and is supported by the side faces 3 of the curbing l. The interconnecting means 9 and 10 prevent the curb ends from being displaced relative to one another perpendicularly to the longitudinal extension of the curbing, and owing to the curb units being fixed to the asphalt layer in the vicinity of the curb side faces 2 turned to the roadway by means of the anchoring elements l6 engaging the fixation lugs 11 there is realized a most reliable anchoring of the individual curb units which will be retained in exact alignment and will not be overturned by impacts due to the traffic or heavy vehicles driven over the curbing onto the sidewalk.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An elongated sectional road curb adapted to be positioned together with other curb units of identical configuration in a row in interconnected end-to-end relationship on an asphalt layer so as to form a border between a roadway and a sidewalk lying at a higher level than the roadway, comprising an elongated concrete body having two side faces and two end faces, a protruding tongue formed integrally with said concrete body on one 'end face thereof, means defining a recess in the other end face of said concrete body, said recess having a shape complementary to that of said tongue, elongated flat iron members one end of which being embedded in said concrete body, the other end of one of said members protruding from one end face of said concrete body, and the other end of the rest of said members protruding from one of the side faces of said concrete body in spaced relationship along the length of said concrete body, said member end protruding from one end face of said concrete body being disposed at a larger distance from that side face of said concrete the other end face of said concrete body from said one end face having said member end protruding therefrom, having a recess therein shaped to receive a Hat iron member in engagement with the asphalt layer therein.

Claims (2)

1. An elongated sectional road curb adapted to be positioned together with other curb units of identical configuration in a row in interconnected end-to-end relationship on an asphalt layer so as to form a border between a roadway and a sidewalk lying at a higher level than the roadway, comprising an elongated concrete body having two side faces and two end faces, a protruding tongue formed integrally with said concrete body on one end face thereof, means defining a recess in the other end face of said concrete body, said recess having a shape complementary to that of said tongue, elongated flat iron members one end of which being embedded in said concrete body, the other end of one of said members protruding from one end face of said concrete body, and the other end of the rest of said members protruding from one of the side faces of said concrete body in spaced relationship along the length of said concrete body, said member end protruding from one end face of said concretE body being disposed at a larger distance from that side face of said concrete body at which the other member ends protrude than from the other side face of said concrete body, and means forming holes in said protruding ends of said members for engagement with anchoring keys driven into the asphalt layer.
2. A curb as claimed in claim 1, further characterized by the other end face of said concrete body from said one end face having said member end protruding therefrom, having a recess therein shaped to receive a flat iron member in engagement with the asphalt layer therein.
