SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the invention an attachable head is provided for a hand operated sprayer which remains in place after attachment, the head being adopted to identify the contents and/or a specific manufacturer or distributor, the head being snapped into place and retained against movement.
It is the principal object of the invention to provide an attachable head for hand operated sprayers for purposes of selective identification of the contents of the receptacle with which the sprayer is used, or of the manufacturer or distributor.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an attachable head of the character aforesaid which is sim ple in construction, yet sturdy and effective in its action.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a hand operated sprayer with a head in accordance with the invention attached thereto, parts being broken away to show the interior construction;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in FIG. 1, parts being broken away to show the interior construction;
FIG. 3 is a view in perspective of the attachable head as seen from one end; and
FIG. 4 is a view in perspective of the attachable head as seen from below.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now more particularly to the drawings a re ceptacle I0 is shown to which a hand operated sprayer 11 is detachably connected by a closure cap 12.
The sprayer 11 can be of any desired type, a suitable sprayer being shown in my prior application for patent filed Oct. 16. 1972, Ser. No. 297,662, with minor'external modifications, but the invention is not limited to that sprayer.
The sprayer 11 is shown for purposes of illustration 1 as having a body IS with a vertical tubular portion M, a horizontal forward tubular portion integrally con nected to and extending from the tubular portion 16 with an interiorly disposed check valve and adjustable nozzle (not shown) and external adjustment nut 18. A pivotally mounted trigger I9, carried on a pivot pin 20 betweenforwardly extending spaced vertical walls 21, for activating an interior piston (not shown) for delivery of liquid in stream or spray form may also be employed.
The body 16 at the front end of the body portion 17 is provided with a shoulder 23 which serves as a front abutment or front limit stop, as hereinafter explained.
The body 16 at the rear has a rearwardly extending strengthening rib 24, with an upwardly and transversely extending rib 25 which serves as a rear abutment or rear limit stop, as hereinafter explained.
The structure of the sprayer 11, as heretofore described, is preferably of synthetic plastic material so as to be light in weight and free from likelihood of corrosion or oxidation.
The head 30 is preferably also molded of synthetic plastic material, can be colored as desired to contrast with or match the color of the sprayer 11, can be color coded to indicate the fluent materials with which the sprayer I1 is used for dispensing, can be externally embossed or imprinted at the time of molding or subsequently to indicate a particular manufacturer or distributor without the necessity of specifically identifying the manufacturer or distributor on the body of the sprayer. The sprayers llll may thus easily be related to a specific vendor of insecticides, pesticides, nutrients or other sprays with a minimum of interference with the manufacture of the sprayer on a mass production basis and at lower cost.
The head 30 preferably includes a front end wall 31 with a notch 32 having diverging surfaces 33 and then converging facing surfaces 34 to engage around and below the tubular portion 17. Below the converging surfaces 34 spaced diverging surfaces 35 are provided to aid in applying the head 30 to the tubular portion 17. The shape of the notch 32 is thus such that the head 30 can be pressed downwardly and snapped over the body portion 16 with the wall 31 immediately behind the shoulder 23, to retain the head 30 in position and against forward movement, the resiliency of the plastic material of the body will permit such application and will resist ready removal.
The head 30, i.e., preferably curved, transversely considered from front to rear, and at the front is preferably lighter than at the rear, the rear preferably being at an elevation corresponding substantially to that of the rib 25, and has end faces 36 which preferably engage the front of the rib and retain the head against rearward movement.
The interior of the. head 30 can be of any desired shape, but is preferably a shell with a thin portion 40 at the top. spaced rearwardly extending inner faces 37, central convex faces 38 to engage the tubular portion 16 for further aiding in the retention of the head 30 and with rear faces 39 extending to the end faces 36.
It will thus be seen that structure has been described with the objects of the invention and attained.
I claim:
1. In combination with a dispensing apparatus having a body and an actuator for fluid delivery from said body the improvement which comprises an upper elongated horizontally disposed portion forming part of said body,
nozzle means extending forwardly of said horizontally disposed portion,
a head mounted on said body in covering relation to the top thereof, and disposed rearwardly of said nozzle means,
said body having at least one upwardly extending abutment portion,
said head having a downwardly extending portion for engagement with said abutment portion for restraining said head against horizontal movement with respect to said body.
said downwardly extending portion having a slotted wall for engagement with said horizontally disposed body portion.
2. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said body has spaced upwardly extending abutment portions between which said head is disposed and with which said head is in engagement for restraining said head against horizontal movement with respect to said body.
3. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said body has spaced downwardly extending side wall portions in engagement with said horizontally disposed body portion at locations spaced rearwardly of said abutment portion.
4. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said slotted wall has wall portions for gripping engagement with said horizontally disposed body portion 5. The combination defined in claim 4 in which said wall portions are converging.
6. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said slotted wall has diverging wall portions for facilitating attachment to said horizontally disposed body portion.
7. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said head is of synthetic plastic material, and
said slotted wall is resilient for engagement with said horizontally disposed portion.
8. The combination defined in claim 1 in which said body has a vertical tubular portion, and
said head has interior wall portions in engagement with said tubular portion.
