5 Claims, 8 Drawing Figures PATENTED JAN 2 21974 SHEEI 1 BF 2 SIMULATED POCKET ORNAMENT AND HOLDER BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to articles of clothing, and more particularly, to an adjustable simulated handkerchief pocket ornament for use in a pocket of the wearers clothing.
2. Description of the Prior Art Articles of clothing such as jackets or coats commonly include a breast pocket within which the wearer may position a folded handkerchief or scarf for purposes of accenting the wearing ensemble. The use of standard rectangular-shaped handkerchiefs or scarfs require the wearer to fold and arrange the handkerchief or scarf carefully so as to attain the optimum appearance thereof when positioned within the breast pocket. If the wearer desires to interchange an initially chosen handkerchief or scarf with another of alternate color, the entire folding and arranging operation must be repeated. These folding and arranging operations are time consuming and require a degree of skill, tending to discourage use of decorative pocket ornaments by the average person.
Furthermore, the average size of the breast pocket of most jackets is such that, upon folding of the handkerchief or scarf to fit within the pocket, the hidden portions thereof may be so large as to cause the pocket to bulge or wrinkle undesirably. Thus, the wearer is limited in many instances to the use of relatively small sized scarfs or handkerchiefs for use as a breast pocket ornamentation. Additionally, it often is desirable to use a previously folded and arranged handkerchief in an alternate jacket pocket, but to do so with a standard rectangular-shaped handkerchief requires careful removal thereof from the first breast pocket to the second, being cautious not to disturb the folding arrangement which previously has been achieved.
Also, it is desirable to have available a large variety of handkerchief formations and color combinations which can be interchangeably employed on a large variety of suits, etc.
Accordingly, a primary object of this invention is to provide a decorative breast pocket ornament holding device which will retain a prefolded simulated scarf or handkerchief in a fixed position in a breast pocket, the same being so designed so as to be removable from the pocket without disturbing the folded arrangement of the simulated scarf or handkerchief A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which will retain the simulated handkerchief in a fixed position at any desired height within the breast pocket.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which is adjustable to fit different lengths of breast pockets without the necessity for removing or rearranging the simulated handkerchief.
A still further object of the invention is to provide such a device in which the simulated handkerchief or scarf adapted to be retained thereby includes a color key combination designator whereby the user thereof will be guided as to acceptable color combinations to be used together as a wearing ensemble.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will occur to .those skilled in the art from the ensuing disclosure in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a typical jacket with breast pocket illustrating the simulated pocket ornament device of the invention in position therein.
FIG. 2 is a perspective exploded view of the device of the invention with the simulated handkerchief removed therefrom.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the device prior to positioning of the simulated handkerchief therein.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 but with the simulated handkerchief locked thereon.
FIGS. 5A, 5B and 5C are elevational views of simulated handkerchief arrangements for use in conjunction with the holder of the invention.
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary exploded perspective view of an alternate form of the holder and adapter illustrated in FIG. 2.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The decorative pocket ornament holder device of the invention is indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 in FIG. 2. The device 10 includes a simulated handkerchief holder 12 and an adapter member 13. Holder 12, which may be constructed of any light weight resilient material, such as plastic, includes a plurality of finger members 14 provided in the upper portion thereof. The fingers 14 may be formed upon the holder 12 by die stamping a series of U-shaped cuts 16 in the body of the holder and partially deforming the fingers such that they will stand out from the plane of the holder 12 when the fingers are in their relaxed position.
A respective cutout indentation 20, 21 is formed on each elongate edge 18 of the holder 12 and a slide member 22 is positioned so as to be movable longitudinally along the holder 12 between the extremities of the cutout portions 20, 21. Slide 22 is of generally C- shaped configuration and may be formed of any rigid material such as aluminum or other metal or plastic. The slide 22 includes an elongate leg 24 extending the width of holder 12 and positioned thereon such that it will abut the surfaces of the fingers 14 when the latter are in their relaxed position. The slide 22 includes return- bent flanges 25, 26 which retain the slide upon the holder 12 but permit the same to be moved laterally upon the holder.
As best seen in FIGS. 3 and 4, the fingers 14, when in relaxed position, extend away from the plane of the holder 12 to provide a space indicated by the are 30. The fingers 14 remain in their relaxed position indicated in FIG. 3 so long as the slide member 22 is maintained in its lowermost position upon the holder adjacent the points at which the fingers 14 are connected to the holder 12. A prefolded simulated handkerchief 32 is adapted to be received within the space 30. Upon positioning of the handkerchief 32 within the space 30, the slide member 22 may be raised toward the tips of the fingers 14 to cause the fingers to be compressed against the handkerchief 32 to clamp the handkerchief between the fingers and the holder 12. This latter condition is illustrated in FIG. 4. The fingers 14 may be provided with serrations 15 adjacent the tips thereof to enhance the clamping ability of the fingers when handkerchief 32 is positioned on holder 12.
In the condition illustrated in FIG. 4 the holder and handkerchief assembly is in condition for use as a decorative pocket ornament in a breast pocket 34 illustrated in FIG. 1. The elongate dimension of the breast pocket 34 will dictate the total height which is desired for the device such that the handkerchief 32 will extend a desired distance 33 above the lead edge 37 of the pocket 34. For purposes of maintaining the holder 12 in the proper position in pocket 34, adapter member 13 is provided for use with holder 12. Adapter 13, which is constructed of the same material as holder 12, has a plurality of pairs of aligned openings 40, 40', and 40" which are adapted to receive a pair of button members 42 provided on the lower edge of the holder 12. The button members 42 cooperate with respective pairs of holes 40, 40, and 40 in a snap-fit arrangement such that upon cojoining the holder with the adapter, the two elements will remain assembled butmay be disassembled for purposes of changing the overall elongate height of the device 10. Thus, the proper disposition of the handkerchief 32 within the breast pocket 34 may be achieved by positioning the adapter 13 upon the holder 12 using the suitable set of openings 40, 40, 40" to provide the desired elongate length of the overall assembled device 10. It is to be understood that once the device 10 has been completely assembled with a simulated handkerchief 32 clamped thereon, the overall length of the device may be changed without disturbing the clamped handkerchief 32 simply by unsnapping the adapter 13 from the buttons 42 and repositioning the same on a different set of openings. Likewise, should it be desired to remove the handkerchief 32 without disturbing the overall length of the device it), this also may be done by moving the slide 22 toward the center of the holder 12 and removing the handkerchief 32 to be replaced by an alternate handkerchief as descirbed.
In FIGS. 5A, 5B and 5C there are illustrated three alternate forms of prefolded decorative simualted handkerchiefs intended for use with the deivce 10. It is to be understood that the forms of handkrchiefs illustrated are representative only and that many variant folding arrangements may be prepared and adapted for use with the device 10. In each of the arrangements illustrated, three separate color combinations are provided, one each for each of the simulated elements 50, 52 and 54 of the respective arrangements. In FIG. 5A, the element 50 is illustrated to be of blue color, the element 52 being yellow, and the element 54 being red. The color combinations chosen are intended to guide the wearer as to the proper combinations of color accessories which may be worn with a particular jacket or coat. Thus, if the jacket 35 chosen to be worn is of blue color, the wearer will select the simulated handkerchief of FIG. 5A and he will know that accessories of either yellow or red color may also be worn with the particular jacket. It will be understood that many variations of color coded decorative handkerchiefs may be prepared for use in conjunction with the holder 10 to guide the wearer as to accessories which may properly be worn together therewith.
Although the invention has been illustrated and described in what is conceived to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the invention. For instance, the adapter 113 may be secured to the holder 12 by an arrangement other than the button and opening combination illustrated in FIG. 2. In FIG. 6. slotted key-hole openings 41, are illustrated in place of the openings 40 of adapter 13. Modified buttons 42' having flattened heads and upstanding stems for mating engagement within the openings 41 are provided on the holder 12'. Thus holder 12 would be connected to adapter 13 by positioning the buttons 42' within the enlarged opening 41 and sliding the holder 12' in a downwardly direction to position the stems '"of the buttons 42' within the narrowed slots of the openings 41.
