J BURKHARDT.
METHOD OF FORMING ORNAMENTAL STUDS 0R 'PILLARS.
No. 378,414. I Patented Feb. 21, 1888.
'UNITED STATES JOHN BURKHARDT, OF NE\V YORK,
PATENT n. Y., Assienon" or ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. JACKSON St 00., OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,414, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed March 4, 1887. Serial No. 229,708. (No model.)
To CLZZ whom it; may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOHN Beam-mam, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Method of Forming from Metal Tubing Certain Ornamental Studs, Little Pillars, and Similar Articles for Various Uses; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a stud or little pillar formed of tubing by my new method. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a piece of tubing embraced by a yoke or pillow-block in readiness for the action of a pair of dies to be operated by a power-press. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of a pair of dies, the clamp lug-yoke shown in Fig. 2, and a piece of tubing, and shows the form to which the latter reduced by the first compression and pair of dies. Fig. i is a vertical central section of the tube, the yoke, and a different pair of dies, and shows the form of the completed stud after the action of the modified dies thereon, also shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 reprecents a modified form of a lower die to be used with one oi the dies shown in Fig. 4, for the reduction of a short tapering piece of tubing to the shape of the pedestal, repre sented in Fig. 6 as supporting a globe. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of the stud or little pillar as supporting a part of a gratel'endcr mounted with globes or balls.
My present invention relates to the subject of forming ornamental metal spheroidal bodies from tubing, described in my applications for patents filed January 3,1887, and the product thereof is intended to be used in connection with the articles designated in said applications.
lo the drawings, A denotes a piece of metal tubing embraced by a clamping yoke or col lar formed in two parts or jaws, B G, and secured by the hinged removable claspingbars I).
E E are a pair of dies made with central cylindrical projections, a, and an annular reccss, d, with rectangular shoulders, and HH denote a pair of dies similar to dies E E, ex-
cepting that, instead of being formed with rectangular shoulders, the outer shoulders are rounded to form a quarter-circle, as shown in Figs. 4. and 5.
The interior of the yoke B C may be either cylindrical or of tapering form, increasing in diameter from the center of the opening to the ends through which the ends of the tube A project, and thus made said interior will correspond in form with the shape indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
By the-use of the die H and the modified die J, Fig. 5, the pedestal K, Fig. 6, may be formed from a tapering piece of tubing.
To form studs or pillars by the use of the mechanism described above the upper die, E, will be attached to the slide or plunger of a power-press, and its counter-die E will restupon the platen or seat of the press directly under the die E, and the piece of tubing embraced by yoke B G will he placed in a vertical position between the dies, resting in die E, as seen in the drawings. The first downward movement of the die E, actuated by the press, will be limited, either by a-suitble stop or by the manipulation of the opera tor, to arrest the descent, after having formed by compression the collars or rings it directly above and below the yoke B C. At this stage of the process dies H H will be substituted in place of dies E E, and a second operation of the press will be made in like manncr, and this second compressive action upon the tube A will cause the dies H H to form the collars g 9 around the ends of the tube A, completing the article. The body of the tube A bet-ween the two collars i i will by the compressing action be forced into the form of the interior of yoke B C.
It should be observed that the compressive force upon the piece of tubing will cause the collars or rings formed simultaneously there by to be of corresponding shape and size at each end of the stud or pillar. Ofcourse one collar may be formed at one end of the stud and two or more at the other end.
Having described my invention, what I claim therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The method herein described of forming studs, pillars, or pedestals, which consists in forming the collars g g around the ends of the first formingthe nietalintozttub'emhen placing tube, and at the same time compressing the -10 the tube in the yoke or clamp B G,then placing central portion of the tube into the form of the the tube with the yoke around it between aninterior of the yoke or clamp B C.
- 5 nular dies'E E and compressing it, forming JOHN BURKHARD'I.
the collars or rings i i, and then placing the \Vitnesscs:
tube with the yoke around it between the JOSEPH WV. LANTRY, diesH H and compressing it between them, H. P. K. PEoK.
