Abstract

An apparatus for engaging the lapping surface of a tool with a surface to be lapped by means of driving elements which cause a relative ''''break-up'''' motion between said surfaces.

Claims (12)

1. An apparatus for finishing the surface of lens mounted on one side of a lens block having pin-receiving depressions in its other side comprising: a generally vertically disposed shaft having an upper end and a lower end, said upper end adapted to receive a lapping tool having a polishing surface of a selected base and cross curves, first means to rotate said shaft about its axis at a first speed, second means to move said axis in a cylindrical plane at a speed substantially less than said first speed, drive pin means, an arm supporting said drive pins over said pin-receiving depressions third means connected to said arm Causing said pins to press the surface to be finished of said lens against said polishing surface, fourth means to move said arm in a plane substantially parallel to the base curve of said lap tool, whereby a combination of movements between said lens surface and said polishing surface is the sum of the rotation of said shaft about its axis, the movement of said axis in a cylindrical plane and the reciprocating transverse movement of said pins.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein said first means is an electric motor having a rotating output shaft, and connector means for connecting said output shaft to said first-mentioned shaft.
3. The invention of claim 2 wherein said second means includes an eccentric member having an offset opening rotatably receiving said shaft, second electric motor having a second output shaft and second connector means connecting said second output shaft to said first-mentioned shaft.
4. The invention of claim 2 wherein said first shaft is driven at a relatively greater speed than said eccentric.
5. The invention of claim 1 wherein said third means includes means pivotally mounting said arm, and an air cylinder adjustably urges said pins into said depressions.
6. The invention of claim 1 wherein said fourth means is an electric motor having a lateral output movement.
7. An apparatus for finishing the surface of lens mounted to a lens block comprising a generally vertically disposed shaft having an upper end and a lower end, said upper end adapted to receive a lapping tool having a polishing surface of a selected base and cross curves, first means to rotate said shaft about its axis at a first speed, second means to move said axis in a cylindrical plane at a speed substantially less than said first speed, third means for engaging said block and for maintaining the lens surface to be ground against said polishing surface, fourth means to move said third means in a plane substantially parallel to the base curve of said lap tool, whereby a combination of movements between said lens surface and said polishing surface is the sum of the rotation of said shaft about its axis, the movement of said axis in a cylindrical plane and the reciprocating transverse movement of said pins.
8. The invention of claim 7 wherein said first means is an electric motor having a rotating output shaft, and connector means for connecting said output shaft to said first-mentioned shaft.
9. The invention of claim 8 wherein said second means includes an eccentric member having an offset opening rotatably receiving said shaft, second electric motor having a second output shaft and second connector means connecting said second output shaft to said first-mentioned shaft.
10. The invention of claim 2 wherein said first shaft is driven at a relatively greater speed than said eccentric.
11. The invention of claim 7 wherein said third means includes an air cylinder adjustably urging said block and lens toward said lapping surface.
12. The invention of claim 1 wherein said fourth means is an electric motor having a lateral output movement.
