INVENTOR I64. A TTORINEY F. J. MITCHELL.
ATOMIZER.
Patented Oct. 18, 18871 (No Model.)
WITNES SES UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
EREnEmcK JAMES MrroHELL, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT L. (JOHN. O SAME PLACE.
ATOMIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 371,615, dated October 18, 1887.
Application filed January 22, 1587. Serial No. 225,222. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK JAMES MITCHELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful perfumed; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a means for atomizing the. substance, powder, or liquid into the place, and affording facilities for atomizing by the use of force or power originating at any distance desirable from the place to be deodorized or perfumed; second, to do both these things in a cheaper, better, and more lasting way than heretofore, and by means which will not easily get out of repair; third, to keep the powder,- substance, or liquid of a uniform strength. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in -which--- Figure 1 is a view of the entire apparatus, showing the vessel containing liquid to be atomized and its adjuncts and the cylinder of the air forcing or compressing device in section, the air forcing'or compressing device being attached to and operated by a door. Fig. 2v is a perspective view of the disk and pipes of the atomizer.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the place to be disinfected, dcodorized, or perfumed I place or attach the vessel 0, containing the liquid disinfectant or perfume to be atomized into the room. The pipe I) of the atomizer has its one end immersed intheliqu'd and the other end in close proximity to the e l of the air-pipe c of the atomizer.
The pipe 0 is by a pipe or tube, G, (pref 5 ably a rubber tubc,) connected with an air tion from the/vessel.
vided with pivots p p, on which the cylinder can turn. Piston B is connected with the door itself by the bracket r, and moves on the pivot a, running through the piston near its end, and 6 0 the pivot s is held in place and moves in the projections t t of the'bracket r. The piston is also provided with the section a, which forces air out of the cylinder A through the pipe 'v,
to which the air-tube C is attached. When the piston is drawn out of the cylinder by the action ofthe door, it sucks air into the cylinderthrough the pipe 0 0 v, and when-the door is closed the piston forces the air out through the same pipe, 12 C c, and so atomizes t-hcliquid in the vessel a into the circumambient air. I also use the disk d, having a slot or cut, e, which disk prevents evaporation, and the slot, together with the funnel f, allows the liquid which is drawn out and not atomized to flow down into the vessela again. The disk performs the very important office of keeping the liquid at a uniform strength by not allowing too much evaporation to weaken it. This evapo- .ration and consequent weakening has been a great defect with othcr deviccs for disinfecting and perfuming where the whole surface of the liquid has been exposed to the air.
The funnel f has a flange, m, and by means of the removable screw w, I screw the flange of the funnel down onto the disk e, thus keepiug the flange tightly in place, and also presslug the disk down closely to prcvent evapora-- This screw works in the screw-thread in the neck gv of the vessel a. The screw is made short enough so that its upper L end will be below the opening a of the funnel.
I prefer to use this screw insteadof making the screw a part of the funnel itself, so that the hole a is-always on the side nearest the tube 0, which is more convenient, and which ;I could "i not depend upon ifI were to screw down the funu el tightly by ascrcw which were part of itself.
I prefer to solder the disk (I and the pipes c and b together. 1 put them in place by taktoo ing hold of the funnel and the screw, which and with the other hand I run the straight end of pipe 0 perpemlicnlarly up the funnel, and when the end h of pipe 0 gets near the opening a of the funnel I turn that pipe horizontally and run the end h through that opening. Then, holding the funnel and pipes in that position,
I immerse the pipe 6 into the liquid, while at the same time I place the funnel within the neck 5 ot' the vessel 0, and as the disk is soldered to the two pipes b and c the disk rests in place by so immersing pipe b. Then I screw the funnel and disk both down tightly by the In the accompanying drawings I show only one way of accomplishing ,ihe objects of my improvements; but I also claim all substantial ly similar ways which would be necessitated by a, different motive power than a near door. Different atomizers or difi'erent air forcing, or compressing devices might be also used without departing from my invention, as the substance 01 my invention is having an air forcing or compressing device attached to some movahlc object, and by means of a pipe or tube connctteC with an atomizer operating, on liquid ti; atoznize it into any place to be disinfected or pertained, and even if the place into which the disinfectant, antiseptic, deodorizer, r per [unitis to be atomized is at a great distance from the movable object; so that it in the honseor neighborhood any door or other movable thing (whether on the same door or on a lower or higher floor) is specially adapted, from its frequent use, to be connected with the atomizer, its motion can be utilized for my improvement.
'Prior to this invention i; was accustomed to operate perfnming and disinfcctim devices at aslight distance by the use oi wires over pulleys; but these wires lose some force over each pulley on -which they are strung, so that they cannot beinadc to ope ate when. stretched at some longer distance from thcplace tn Zimmerated upon, as they require so many pnheys that they are unreliabl and, in fact, can only be used forveryshortdistances. lit-sides, the tension isliltclytogtt them outol'oider. This is not the case with my improvement, as my improvement, lltflllg pmmniatic, simply cmploys air as the means to operate with \Vliat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by l'n-tlr-s Patent, is-
't. J\,llitlll tlitflhgol compressingdevice connected with and operated anloimitically by a door, and by means of a pipe or tube ainnectcd with an atomizer in a suitable vessel containing liquid substance or powder to be atoniized, substantially as described.
2. A vessel, (1, containing disinfectant, perl'nme, or the like to be atomized, having a slotted disk, (I, and funn lf, substantially as and for the purpose described.
