Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. MILES, JR., OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
VIMPEOVED PAINT-BRUSH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,962, (lated November 18, 18H2.
To @ZZ whom t may concern-.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MILES, Jr., of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Paint-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, wherein I have represented a longitudinal section of my improved brush.
Paint-brushes are usually made by driving a tapering handle through the center of the bristles after they have been tied into a bunch. In use this handle sometimes slips down into the brush, rendering the same useless.
The nature of my said invention consists in providing a shoulder in the handle of the brush, beneath which the bristles expand as the handle is driven into place, and effect-ually prevent the tapering end of the handle working loose and sliding back into the brush.
In the drawing, (t is the handle, and b the bristles forming the brush. c is the binding, of string or other material. o o is a shoulder turned in the handle on the line ofthe top end of the brush, so that the bristles expand beneath this shoulder as the handle is driven through, and thus the possibility of the handie sliding back is prevented. I also employ the grooves at 90 x around the end ofthe handle to aid in holding the bristles and handle rmly together, as said bristles will, under the compression to which they are subjected in driving in the handle, expand into said grooves.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment ofa shoulder, o, in the handles of paint brushes to prevent the handle from slipping back into the brush after the saine has been driven into the brush, as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 21st day of May, 1862.
XVM. H. MILES, JR.
