Abstract

A dual tape and slide fastener assembly for use on garments and unique in that it obviates the need for basting and pinning. The attaching faces of the fabric tapes are substantially covered with strips of adhesive media which requires no heat and which can be properly lined up, pressed by hand and set in place in a matter of minutes. The tacky surfaces of the adhesive strips are covered by a suitable plastic or an equivalent backing which can be peeled off when the user desires to set the tapes in place prior to permanently stitching them to the garment.

2 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures ADHESIVELY A'I'IACHED SLIDE FASTENER AND TAPE ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a prefabricated dual tape and zipper type slide fastener assembly wherein the attachable faces of the usual fabric tapes are such that they can be expeditiously lined up and set in position in a manner that basting and pinning steps can be eliminated and has to do with tapes whose attaching faces are effectually provided with suitable pressure sensitive adhesive media.
Many persons who like to sew, including professional as well as non-professional dressmakers, often find it difficult to set the tapes of a slide fastener in place. In fact, one can assume that it may take a dressmaker minutes more or less to locate and set a dual tape slide fastener assembly. Then too considerable time and patience can be involved in order to properly baste or pin the assembly in place prior to permanent stitching and even then the results can be displeasing. It follows that an object of the present inventive concept is to eliminate the basting and pinning steps. Although the invention is primarily designed and adapted for use by professional dressmakers and homemakers, it can be acceptably employed by garment manufacturers and has been found to be usable accordingly.
As will be hereinafter more fully appreciated the adhesively coated surfaces of the individual tapes take the place of basting or pinning. After the plastic backing or cover has been removed the tapes are set in place on the desired garment surfaces. No heat or mechanical pressure or special folding is required. The adhesive serves its purpose and will hold the tapes in position ready for stitching in the regular manner and the job will prove out to be neat and professionally set requiring only a matter of several minutes more or less.
Briefly, the present inventive concept comprehends the use of a prefabricated ready-to-use fasteners for use in conjunction with a skirt placket, a fly in a pair of trousers or similar openable and closable component part of the garment. The fastener, generally stated, comprises a pair of readily attachable elongated flexible tapes having inward and outward longitudinal marginal edges. Strips or coatings of adhesive media are provided upon the attachable lengthwise faces of the tapes and are positioned to mount the tapes preparatory to permanent stitching whereby, in so doing, to dispense with the need for basting or pinning the same as is customarily done. The inner adjacent lengthwise edges of the paired tapes are separably connectable by slide fastener means which, as is usual, is operatively mounted on the inward lengthwise edges of the respective tapes. More'speeifically each strip of adhesive media is of a width less than the width of the coacting tape and has an outward edge flush with and is substantially coextensive with the outward edge of said tape. Its inward edge is spaced outwardly from the inward edge of the tape and terminates clear of the adjacent component parts of the slide fastener means.
In carrying out the principles of the invention a protector type cover strip of plastic material often referred to as a backing strip is provided and is of a width comparable with the width of the overall width of the fastener and spans both tapes and the intervening slide fastener means and has spaced longitudinal edge portions attached to and manually peelable and detachable from the adhesive strips. It also includes a centralized web portion which is spaced from and overlies the component parts of the slide fastener means.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which: I
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a slide fastener and tape assembly constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention and showing the upper end portions of the adhesive strips and an upper portion of the plastic backing or cover means which has been peeled loose to expose the adhesive strips for use.

Referring first to FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 it will be observed that the garment, a skirt for example, is denoted by the numeral 6 and is provided withan openable and closable placket which is denoted at 8. The placket as detailed embodies an inward fold 10 having a turned in lateral flap l2 and a companion overlapping outward fold 14 having a somewhat wider turned in flap 16. Manifestly, this is a conventional skirt placket.
The improved prefabricated ready-to-use slide fastener tape assembly comprises a pair of elongated duplicate fabric or equivalent tapes 18 having inward lengthwise marginal edges 20 and outwardly straight marginal edges 22. The outwardly facing surfaces are each provided with a coating or strip of appropriate pressure sensitive adhesive material 24 which is coextensive or substantially so with the length of the tape. The outer marginal edge 26 is flush with the coacting edge 22. The inner edge 28 is spaced outwardly from the coacting marginal edge 20.
The slide fastener means embodies interengaging coacting or meshing links 30 which are constructed and arranged as usual and are anchored and secured together at lower ends as denoted at 32 in FIG. 1. These links serve to accommodate the slide 34 and the pivotally attached fingergrip 36.
The plastic backing or cover means is denoted at 38 The combination of the tapes and separable and connectable slide fastener means plus the adhesive surfaces function to eliminate the need for basting or pinning into position before permanent stitching. This is an advantage which makes for a simple and quick as well as practical method of application which in turn, results in a smooth and professional job. Then, too a further advantage is that the assembly can be set and sewn from the top side of the garment thus assuring a view while the operational steps are being progressively carried out.
In practice all that is necessary is to catch hold of and peel off the protector strip or cover 38 in the manner suggested at the upper end of FIG. 1. The assembly is placed right side up. Then open the seam of the garment and fold the seam allowance. Place the folded seam edge on the adhesive coated tape close to the locale of the slide fastener elements, sometimes referred to as slide retaining and tracking members. It is necessary to carefully set the tape in place in the manner illustrated in FIG. 3. The adhesive media will anchor the first tape in place and it is now ready for placement of the second tape and ultimately readied for permanent stitching of both tapes.
Experience has shown that it is advisable to start from the top (FIG. 3) stitch close to the edge of the folded seam to the very bottom as generally designated at 32. One can pivot the needle and stitch across the bottom to the other side, stitching through the gannent and tape only.
As illustrated in FIG. 6, the cover strip need not be channel-shaped as shown in FIG. 1 but can just as well be two separate strips 44 which leave the meshing links 30 exposed. This permits the seamstress to set one side of the zipper in place by removing only one strip 44 without interference from the other adhesive strip 24 since it remains covered until the seamstress is ready to apply it to the other fold in the garment.
It is submitted that the herein disclosed slide fastener and tape assembly is simple, practical, economical and well serves the purposes for which it has been perfected. A more extended description is deemed to be unnecessary.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the ing or pinning the same as is customarily done, and,

The fastener means defined in and according to claim 1, and wherein each strip of adhesive media is of a width less than the width of its coacting tape and has an outward marginal edge flush with and substantially coextensive with the outward marginal edge of said tape and an inward marginal edge spaced outwardly from the inward edge of said tape and terminating clear of the slide fastener means.

Claims (1)

  1. 2. The fastener means defined in and according to claim 1, and wherein each strip of adhesive media is of a width less than the width of its coacting tape and has an outward marginal edge flush with and substantially coextensive with the outward marginal edge of said tape and an inward marginal edge spaced outwardly from the inward edge of said tape and terminating clear of the slide fastener means.
