. C. NORTON.
WATER PROOF GARMBNT.
Patented 1mg..y 9, 1887;
m S 6 NL n W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
HENRY o. NORTON, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WATER-PROOF GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,921, dated August 9, 1887.
' Application filed February 5, 1887. Serial No, 226,640, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C.l NORTON, of
the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State o"f New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Water- Proof Garments, of which the following is a specification.
f' My invention relates to thosewater-proof coats or other garments which have provision for Ventilating theinterior of the coat through the back. y y
The invention consists in the combination, with the body of a water-proof garment perforated in its upper portion and provided onl its exterior surface with ribs or projections, of an outer cape exposed on the exterior of the garment and extending downwardly only sufticiently to cover the perforations, the said cape resting against the ribs or projections and forming between it and the bodyva space open atthe bottom of the cape for ventilation to the outside atmosphere.
In the accompanying drawings,`Fig`ure 1 is a perspective View of a garment embodying my invention, portions ot' the material being broken away to better show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the garment; and Fig. 3is a horizontal section on the plane of the dotted line w ao, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference designate correspending parts in all the figures.
A designates the body of the coat or garment, which in its upper portion has numerous perforations,b; and B is an outer cape covering such perforated body portion and attached thereto at the top, but free therefrom at the bottom. The perforations b provide for the ventilation of the garment through the space c, and in Vorder to maintain such space 4o open and prevent the cape B from hugging tightly against the body A one of said parts has upon its surface ribs or projections d. In this example of my invention the ribs or projections d are on the body A and the perforations b are in the channels between said ribs. rIhe ribs d form channels d', ranging upward and downward, as shown in Figs. l and 3.
In order to afford still greater provision for free ventilation,I may form in the outer cape, B, near the top, other perforations, e, which are protected by a tlap,G,attached at the neck and overlying the perforations c. A portion of this ilap is represented in Fig. 1 as turned up to expose the perforations e.
I am aware thatin a garment having an in ner perforated back said back has been kept out of contact with the body ol' the garment by ribs or projections; but with such a con struction any air passing through the perforations must pass under the bottom edge of the long body of the garment, while with myconstruction the air for ventilation has only to pass under the bottom edge of the short outer cape.
lVhat I claim as myinventiou, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"` The combination, with the body of a waterproof garment perforated in its upper portion and provided on its exterior surface with ribs or projections, of an outer cape, B, exposed on the exterior of the garment and extending downward only sufficiently to cover the perforations, the said cape resting against the ribs or projections and forming between it and the body a space open at the bottom of the cape for ventilation to theoutside atmosphere, substantially as herein described.
HENRY o. NORTON.`
