SHEET 20? 2 NAPKIN This application is a continuation-in-part of Ser. No. 46,858, filed June 17, I970, and now abandoned.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION When employing paper napkins it is especially important to provide a means for holding them in place, and a preferrable way to accomplish this is to provide a pressure sensitive adhesive surface on the napkin. Means must also be provided for preventing the pressure sensitive surface in the manufacturing and packaging process from adhering to adjacent napkins or objects until it is desired to use the napkin. Finally, means must be provided to affix the pressure sensitive surface to the napkin in a simple and commercially feasible manner. SUM- MARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides an arrangement wherein it is possible simply in one operation, to affix, as a unit, a suitable piece of pressure sensitive tape, along with its protective covering means, to a comer of a napkin. The tape, having preexisting pressure sensitive adhesive coating on both sides, is attached to the napkin comer by securing the exposed adhesive surface to the face of the napkin, while at the same time, the protective covering means remains attached to the opposite adhesive surface.
THE RESULT: A unit, composed of a piece of tape having pressure sensitive surfaces on both sides thereof, along with its protective covering means, adhesively secured to the napkin comer. Only when this protective covering means is peeled away, is the napkin ready for use.
It becomes evident that the instant invention markedly facilitates commercial manufacture. Rolls or the like of the aforementioned tape can be fed through appropriate machinery which will cut requisite pieces of the tape and apply them to the napkins (folded or unfolded) and then the usual packaging procedure can be carried out.
The foregoing could not be conveniently accomplished with any of hereinbelow referenced US. patents.
Some examples of the type of pressure sensitive tape which may be used in the instant invention, are disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 2,879,567, column 2, lines 36 to 49.
In another form of the invention, the tape with its protective covering means is automatically tucked under the adhesive layer which contacts the napkin, thus retaining said protective cover strip even after the outer adhesive coating is fully exposed for use. The cover strip is thereby prevented from becoming a litter item.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS FIG. 1 illustrates a complete roll of tape consisting primarily of a protective non-adhesive covering means and an underlying layer 11 which is adhesive coated on both its surfaces, as indicated by the shading I2 and I3.
FIG. 2 shows a corner of a napkin 14 to which has been secured, by means of the underlying adhesive surface (FIG. 1, I3), a piece oftape 17 cut from the roll oftape (FIG. 1
The overlapping sides of the protective covering means 15 and 16 of this attached piece of tape 17 are shown in position from which, by lifting and peeling side 15 or 16, the napkin user can remove this protective covering means (FIG. I, 10) from the underlying adhesive side 12.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a piece of the tape showing the adhesive coated tape layer It as it lies between the non-adhesive protective covering means 10 and the napkin comer 14, as seen along the line A A, looking in the direction of the arrows shown in FIG. 2.
FIGS. 4 and 5 show detailed views of the means for the manual lifting and peeling away of the non-adhesive covering means, by grasping either side 15 or 16 which will expose the underlying adhesive layer 12 to allow it to be pressed to the napkin user's clothing where desired.
FIGS. 4 and 5 also show the distinct advantage of having the protective covering means 10 wider on both sides 15 and 16 than the underl in adhesive Iayerll.
FIG. 6 is a etai ed view of a piece of the tape 17 with its protective covering 10 both folded or tucked under at one end 18.
FIG. 7 is an enlarged sectional view as seen along line B B, looking in the direction of the arrows shown in FIG. 6. The fold has produced a double layer of the protective covering 18 18' and a double thickness of the tape 19. The protective covering portion at 18' underlies the adhesive layers at [9, while the unfolded portion of the tape at 17 still has on it the protective covering 10.
FIG. 8 illustrates the protective covering means I0 peeled away from the adhesive layer 17, yet still adhered to the napkin by the adhesive at 19 on the fold 18.
We claim:
1. Adhesive means adapted to be secured to a napkin, or the like, to removably adhere same to the clothing of a user, said means comprising a piece of tape adapted to be shaped so as to be fed through appropriate machinery which will cut requisite pieces of the tape and apply them to said napkins. the tape having a coating of sensitive adhesive on both sides thereof, one side being adapted to be adhered to a corner of said napkin and the other side to the user's clothing where desired; and a protective removable covering means provided over one side of the adhesive surface of the tape in the form of a separate piece of material having a non-adhesive outer surface facing away from the adhesive surface as afi'ixed on said napkin, the removable non-adhesive protective covering means being wider than the underlying adhesive portion of the tape, thus allowing for the removal of this protective covering by manually lifting and peeling it off; said protective covering means and the underlying adhesive being dimensioned, such that the tape, when fed through appropriate machinery can be selectively cut off in such a manner that the covering means can be either completely removed (and subsequently thrown away) thus to expose the entire adhesive surface thereunder, or, the covering means can be partially tucked under the adhesive surface which engages the napkin so that the covering means can be removed to expose the entire adhesive surface thereunder, yet be retained by the adhesive surface which engages the napkin in an attached litter-free condition.
2. Adhesive means as defined in claim 1, wherein the adhesive surfaces are formed by pressure sensitive adhesive.
3. Adhesive means as defined in claim I, wherein the removable nonadhesive protective covering means is wider on both sides than the underlying adhesive portion of the tape.
4. Adhesive means as defined in claim 3, wherein the protective covering means, prior to removal thereof, overlies only the underlying adhesive means and portions of an associated napkin secured thereto.

Claims (4)

1. Adhesive means adapted to be secured to a napkin, or the like, to removably adhere same to the clothing of a user, said means comprising a piece of tape adapted to be shaped so as to be fed through appropriate machinery which will cut requisite pieces of the tape and apply them to said napkins, the tape having a coating of sensitive adhesive on both sides thereof, one side being adapted to be adhered to a corner of said napkin and the other side to the user''s clothing where desired; and a protective removable covering means provided over one side of the adhesive surface of the tape in the form of a separate piece of material having a non-adhesive outer surface facing away from the adhesive surface as affixed on said napkin, the removable non-adhesive protective covering means being wider than the underlying adhesive portion of the tape, thus allowing for the removal of this protective covering by manually lifting and peeling it off; said protective covering means and the underlying adhesive being dimensioned, such that the tape, when fed through appropriate machinery can be selectively cut off in such a manner that the covering means can be either completely removed (and subsequently thrown away) thus to expose the entire adhesive surface thereunder, or, the covering means can be partially tucked under the adhesive surface which engages the napkin so that the covering means can be removed to expose the entire adhesive surface thereunder, yet be retained by the adhesive surface which engages the napkin in an attached litter-free condition.
2. Adhesive means as defined in claim 1, wherein the adhesive surfaces are formed by pressure sensitive adhesive.
3. Adhesive means as defined in claim 1, wherein the removable nonadhesive protective covering means is wider on both sides than the underlying adhesive portion of the tape.
4. Adhesive means as defined in claim 3, wherein the protective covering means, prior to removal thereof, overlies only the underlying adhesive means and portions of an associated napkin secured thereto.
