TEMPORARY BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,017, dated July 19, 1887.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. BROWN, Jr., of New York city, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 5 ments in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain novel features of construction in binders or filing-receptacles for papers, which improvements are hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates my im' provement applied to a temporary binder constructed with a cover for perfectly inclosing the contents, said cover, however, forming no part of the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of a temporary binder containing the improvement, the cover in this figure being absent. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed views, which assist to show more clearly the nature of the improvement herein described.

A represents the bottom of the binder, B the back, 0 O the sides, and D the removable crossbar or ledge.

I is a series of index sheets, apertured at 2', said sheets being a trifle smaller than the intorior of the binder, so as to freely rise and fall between the parallel sides 0 O.

E is a vertical rod, attached in any suitable manner at its bottom to the binder and rising parallel with the back B through the apertures tain the indexsheets laterally in place within the binder. The upper end of said rod E, as shown in the drawings, rises through an apcrtu re, d, in the ledge D, and above said ledge is provided with a notch or groove,n,to receive a fastening,F. By this means said rod is made to hold the ledge D from upward movement, and to thereby enable the latter to retain the index-sheets verticallyin place upon the rod E, and the upper end of the rod is held in opposition to strain from the weight of the contents of the file when the latter is set upon one of its sides.

The invention relates more particularly to i of the index-sheets, and thereby serving to rethe ledge D and rod and the devices for rctain- 5o ing said ledge removably in place.

In the use of temporary binders of this class, as is well known, papers areinserted between the unconnected indexsheetsl, and when the case is filled the papers, together with the indeX-sheets, are removed from the binder in a mass for permanent disposition elsewhere. Heretofore I have used a fixed cross-piece or ledge at D and a removable rod. In the present instance the rod E is permanently affixed to the binder case or box and the cross-picce D is made removable to permit the withdrawal of the index-sheets from the rod, the fastening F serving to retain the cross pieee or lodge in place until it is desired to remove the contents'65 of the binder and to insert a fresh index.

To further describe the particular construction shown in the drawings, the ends of the ledge rest in recesses 0, cut in the upper surfaces of the sides 0, and said ledgeis provided with shoulders d, which bear outwardly against the inner surfaces of said sides 0. The ledge D is obviously incapable of lateral movement while held down in place by its attachment with the rod E, as described. The fastening F is 7 also shown in the form of a slotted hookpivoted to the ledge D in order to prevent its loss or displacement.

I do not wish to be restricted to the particular means shown for retaining the ledge D in place, for, obviously, said ledge may be hinged to the back 13 of the binder-ease, and may be held down otherwise than by attachment with the rod E. The fastening F, if employed, may also be attached to the under surface of the S5 ledge D, the rod in that case being notched at a suitable point below the ledge to receive the fastening thus placed.

It will be seen that the ledge I), when held laterally in place by its connection with the 0 body of the binder and apertured to engage with the rod E, serves to hold the said rod in its vertical position and to prevent its being tilted forward by the weight of the index-sheets and papers embraced between them whenever the 5 file is held in an inclined position, or when (in the case of a closed file) the latter is set away upon one of its ends.

The combination, with a receptacle and aperturcd index-leaves, of a rod attached at its 7 lower end to the receptacle, an upwardly-movlowerend tothe receptacle, an upwardly-movable ledge laterally supported by its connection wit-h the receptacle, and a fastening de-' vice for detachably connecting the upper end of the rod with the ledge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with a receptacle and apertured index-leaves, of a rod attached at its able ledge supported upon the receptacle and laterally supported by its connection with the receptacle and apertu red to receive the upper end of the rod, and a fastening device adapted to retain the ledge vertically in place upon the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with a receptacle fori papers and apertured index-leaves, of a rod attached at its lower end to the receptacle and notched at its upper end, an upwardly-moyable ledge laterally supported by its connection with the receptacle, and afastening device constructed to engage the notched upper end of the rod and adapted to hold the ledge vertically in place upon the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
