PATENT OFFICE.
OF S ANDUSKY, OHIO.
PICTURE-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,715, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed May -19, 1887.
To all whomit 12mg; concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND DAMLOS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in picture-frames; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a picture frame with a suitable support by means of the arrangement of two frames with hingedjoints at their upper end, adapted to be supported together or disconnected and sup ported independently, as may be desired. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of two frames united and supported by my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the frames, illustrating the staples in position and the beveled top ed gcs of the frame. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a frame, shown supported independently by my improved attachment. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the said attachment. Fig. 5 is a modified form of securing the two frames together. Fig. 6 is another form of securing the said frames. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation. of a frame, showing my improved form of clamp.
A indicates two frames, which have their upper edges formed with bevels a. In the upper portion of the rear side of each of the frames staples a are arranged, to which the ends b of the support 13 are adapted to pass the rear of the frame. As shown in Figs. 5
Serial No. 238,767. (No model.)
and 6, the said staples a may be united by a straightwire rod or by the hooks or any other form of bent or straight wire, as may be desired. The support 13 will be constructed of suitable spring-wire applicable for the purpose.
As shown in Fig. 7, a clamp, O, is arranged in connection with the rear side of the frame, and is constructed of suitable spring-wire, having the central depression, 0, which bears against the rear side of the picture or backing, being secured at its ends in the woodwork of the frame. As many of these clamps as may be desired may be arranged in the back of the picture, and thereby retain the picture in connection with the frame, but at the same time allowing it to be readily removed there from by simply raising the clamp.
I do not wish to be limited to the use of any particular material in the construction of the frames; neither do I wish to be limited to form, size, or proportion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of two frames, A, having upper beveled ends, a, the staples a, and the wire connections for said staples, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with one or more frames, A, of the support B, having the ends b and the bent rests I), adapted to engage with the same, substantially as deseribet The eombination, with the frame A, of the spring-wire clamp 0, connected at its ends to the said frame and having a central depressed portion, 0, substantially as described.
4. The combination of two frames flexibly a'nd detachably connected together, so that one frame may serve as a support for the other, substantially as described.
5. The combination of two frames flexibly and detaehably connected together and the support -13 between the same, whereby they are made convertible from a double to asingle frame, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND DAMLOS.
Witnesses:
Tune. KUH, FRANZ RING.
