Description

PATENT FFICE.
CALEB G. PUOKETT, OF CERRO GORDO, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAIN-VALVES FOR PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 36,365, dated September 2, 1862.
To all whom, lt may concern.-
Beit known that I, CALEB G. PUOKETT, of Cerro Gordo, in the county of Randolph and State of Indiana, have inventedva new and Improved Device for Letting Off Water from- Pumps, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similarletters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and effective means for letting 0E water from pumps to prevent freezing.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a screw-rod provided at its lower endfwith a valve or stopper of cork or other suitable material, and passing down through asuitable case on-the side of the pump-stock, in combi nation with a pipe emanating from the lower part of the pump-stock and communicating with the interior of the same in such a manner that by means of said screw-rod the pipe can be opened and closed at pleasure, and that when the pipe is open the water remainingin the pump is permitted to ooze out, and the freezing of the same in 'the pump is prevented.
To enable those skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents the pumpstock, from which the pipe B extends down into the well. A bucket or plunger, C, which is operated by a handle, D, and a valve, E, constitute 'the ordinary working parts of the pump.
From the lower part of the stock A a pipe, a, extends, the outer end of which is bent upward, so as to meet the valve b, which is secured to the lower end of the screw-rod c. The valve b consists of a piece of metal covered on its under surface with cork or other suitable material; or it may be made of a hollow metal case filled with cork, leather, india-rubber, or any other suitable material. The screw d, which carries the rod c,screws 'into a bracket, e, which projects from the side of the stock A, or which forms the top of a metal case, f, that is rmly attached to the pumpstock, and which covers up and protects the valve b and pipe a. When applied to a pump, the pipe a will be placed down as low as possible close over the bucket when the same has arrived at its lowest position, so `that all the water remaining in the pump can be let out, and the screw-rod c will be made sufficiently long to extend up above theground, so that the valve can be conveniently operated. The case f protects the screwrod, the Valve, and the pipe against injury from the dirt and stones. By these means 'the water from the pump can be let off quick or slow, as may be desired, and the whole device is so simple that a child can manage it. The valve and pipe are perfectly protected by the case f, so that the dirt may be put against the pump-stock without preventing said parts from working, and the screw-rod c can be taken out and the cork or other material repaired or replaced by a fresh piece without taking away the dirt or platform over the well, Vor without disturbing any part of the pump. The several parts of my device are made of metal which will not rust nor impart to the water any deleterious properties, and said device can be attached with little trouble to any pump, old or new. It may be applied to any side of the pump-stock; but it will be the most convenient to have it right under the handle, so that it can be lreached when done pumping withoutgoing round the pump.
I am aware that side pipes connecting the valve-chamber with the eduction pipe and provided with a valve, so that the water can be drawn from the valve chamber and conducted to the well, are old. I do not claim the above as my invention; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the box f,screw valve rod c, valve b, and pipe a, with the pump-stock A, in the manner herein shown and described.
OALEB Gr. PUGKETT.
