SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,377, dated May 24, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be. it known that I, ALONZO G. FAYE, J r., of Natick, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bathing -Slippers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object to construct a bathing-slipper the bottom of which is formed to permit a free circulation of water about the bottom and sides of the foot which is concealed and covered by the slipper.

In accordance with this invention the outer sole and upper are preferably formed as one ter may enter the space through the opening in the outer sole,and, as the inner sole is pressed against the outer solo by the weight of the wearer, the water will pass up through the openings in the inner sole beneath and about the foot of the wearer.

Figure 1 shows in side elevation, partially broken out, a bathing-slipper embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a top view of the inner sole, it showing the opening in the outer sole in dotted lines; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the bathing-slipper shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a similar section of the bathingslipper, showing the inner sole pressed against the outer sole.

The outer sole, a, and upper 11 are preferably formed in a single piece, molded and welded together, and made of rubber or other material. The outer solo, a, is provided at its fore part with an opening, a, preferably starshaped, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2. The upper side or inner side of the outer sole within the upper of the slipper is provided about its edge with a projection or shoulder,

An inner sole, 0, of suitable size and shape is placed within the slipper, the outer edges of said inner sole resting upon the raised edge or shoulder a to thereby leave a space or chamber between the outer and inner soles. The inner sole, 0, is provided with numerous openings, 2, arranged in rows or otherwise, as shown in Fig. 2, but not registering with the openings in the outer sole. The inner sole is preferably composed of rubber, so that it may be pressed in contactwith the outer sole by the weight of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 4, but capable of resuming its normal position to leave a space between the outer and inner sole, as shown in Fig. 3.

It will be seen that in using the slipper,

movements of the inner and outer sole into and out of contact with each other serve to open and close the opening in the outer sole to permit water to enter the space or chamber formed between the two soles, and thence to force the same through the holes in the inner sole beneath and about the foot.

It is obvious that instead of forming the shoulder a upon the upper side of the outer sole, as shown in Fig. 3, it may be formed upon the under side of theinner sole, if desired, or some other form of support for the inner sole may be substituted for the raised edge or shoulder a I claim- 1. In a bathing slipper, an upper, and an outer sole having an opening through it at the fore part, combined with an inner sole supported within the slipper above theouter sole to leave a space or chamber between the two soles, said inner sole having numerous openings which do not register with the opening in the outer sole, substantially as described.

2. In a bathing-slipper, an upper, and an outer sole having-an opening through it, co1nbined with a yielding inner sole normally supported above and out of contact with the outer sole, said inner sole having numerous openings which do not register with the opening in the outer sole, and thereby close the opening in the outer sole when pressed in contact with it, substantially as described.
