Abstract

A clip device for removably securing, as a unit, a pair of combination weatherstrip and sash balance units to window frames in which a pair of the clip devices are employed in connection with each sash balance unit, and each clip device is in the form of a strip of metal or the like having its ends hooked over to engage the side edges of the respective sash balance units, and the strip is formed to define a finger extending lengthwise of its middle portion and includes a reinforced spur element adapted to engage one sidewall of the dado groove. The clip device is also formed to define a prong at the end thereof that is disposed adjacent the blind stop, and the spur element is so shaped that when the clip device finger is pressed to force the spur element into the dado groove, the spur element cams the strip in the direction of the blind stop to embed the prong in same, and the spur element, once pressed into the dado groove, resists withdrawal to maintain the clip device firmly anchored to the jamb.

No. 3,122,798. that will permit a pair of combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units, as applied to a pair of sash in the manner the sash are to operate in the window, to be mounted in the window frame simultaneously as a unit.
In accordance with the said Zegers et a1. U.S. Pat. No. 3,122,798, clip devices of the type indicated are indented rearwardly therefor for application to the jamb dado groove, and the combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units, as applied to a pair of sash in the manner these components are to cooperate when operatively mounted in the window, together with a pair of the clip devices for each combination Weatherstrip and sash balance unit (one clip device applied to either end thereof), are mounted in the window frame as a unit by placing the lower ends of the sash balance units on the windowsill within the window opening at approximately the location they are to have when the sash are operatively positioned in the window, and then swinging the sash balance units and sashes to their normal vertically disposed operating positions, after which the clip device indentations are pressed into the jamb dado grooves to mount the sash balance units, and thus the sash, in their operating positions within the window. The clip indentations of said U.S. Pat. No. 3,122,798 include prongs or teeth projecting from either side thereof that engage opposite sides of the respective dado grooves to hold the clip devices in place.
A principal object of this invention is to provide a simplified clip device of the type indicated which requires cooperation with only one side of the dado groove, and which permits the end of the clip device that is directed toward the blind stop to be firmly anchored thereto.
Another important object of the invention is to eliminate the need to indent the clip device for cooperation with the dado groove, and provide instead a resiliently flexible finger equipped with a spur element that locks the clip device to the jamb as well as cams it against the blind stop for embedding in the blind stop a prong formed in the clip device, on application of the clip device to the jamb.
Other objects of the invention are to provide clip devices of the type indicated that are economical of manufacture, convenient to install, and long lived in use.
In accordance with this invention, the indentation and the pair of guide fingers of the clip device of U.S. Pat. No. 3,122,798 are eliminated, and instead the clip device is formed with a prong at one end thereof adapted for embedding in a blind stop, and a single finger extending lengthwise thereof from the other end of the clip device that is formed to define a reinforced spur element which engages the side of the dado groove facing the blind stop. The spur element has a camming surface which engages the side of the dado groove that faces the blind stop as the clip device is being applied thereto, the proportioning of parts being such that by pressing the clip device finger to dispose the spur element within the dado groove, the clip device is cammed toward the blind stop to embed its prong in the blind stop, and the spur element becomes seated in the dado groove, whereupon engagement of the spur element with the dado groove side wall opposes dislodgment of the clip device from the jamb in three directions, namely inwardly, outwardly and longitudinally of the jamb.
Other objects, uses, and advantages will be obvious or become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description and the application drawings, in which like parts are indicated by like reference numerals throughout the several views.

However, it should be distinctly understood that the specific drawing illustrations provided are supplied primarily for purposes of complying with the requirements of the Patent Code, and that the invention may take other specific embodiments that will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION Reference numeral 10 of FIG. I generally indicates a window construction in which this invention is applied, installed in a building 12. For purposes of illustration, the window construction 10 is shown in this and other figures of the drawings as comprising a window frame 11 including sill l3, jambs 14 and 16 (see FIGS. 2 and 3), a suitable head section (not shown) over the top of the window opening 18 and conventional blind stops 19. These members provide the familiar rectangular window frame in which is mounted a vertically movable upper sash 20 and a lower sash 22 of the conventional type including handles 23. The sashes 20 and 22 are mounted in the window construction 10 for vertical movement by combination Weatherstrip and sash balance members 24 of a conventional type, one suitable form of which is diagrammatically illustrated in FIGS. 2, 3 and 5-8.
The upper sash 20 may comprise side rails 26 and 28, top rail 30, a bottom rail 32, and a window pane 34 associated with the sash rails in the usual manner. The bottom sash 22 may comprise side rails 36 and 38, top rail 40, bottom rail 42, and window pane 44 associated with the latter sash rails in the usual manner.
The combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units 24 shown each comprise a relatively thin elongated strip of metal 50 shaped to provide a pair of sash balance spring receiving or operating passages 52 and a parting strip channel 54. The portions of the strip 50 which define the spring operating or receiving passages 56 are in the form of channel-shaped portions 56 which define tracks 58 that are lodged in recesses or grooves 60 formed in the respective side rails of the individual sashes.
The strips 50 are customarily formed with relatively thin and flat side flanges 62 which merge into the respective ch annel-shaped portions 56, and in the form of the combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units illustrated,' these portions 62 at their outer edges merge into angled walls 64 that project perpendicular to the plane of the respective combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units.
The Weatherstrip and sash balance units 24 also include appropriate coil springs 66 received in the respective operating passages 52, with the upper ends 67 of the respective springs being anchored in any suitable manner to the upper ends of the sash balance unit (as by having a coil portion 67A of each received over side portion 68 of the respective channel portions 56), and the lower ends of the springs carrying the respectively horizontally disposed sash supports 70. The side portions 68 that receive the spring coil portions 67A are indented as at 69 to place the respective spring coil portions 67 within the plane of the respective tracks 58.
The tracks 58 of the specific units 24 illustrated are formed in their web portions 71 to define an operating slot 72 in which the respective sash supports slide, and which terminate in abutments 74 against which the respective sash supports 70 are biased by springs 66 when the units 24 are not operatively associated with the sash. When the sashes are mounted in the window construction 10, the units 24 are secured to the respective jambs 14 and 16 and the tracks 58 of the respective sash Weatherstrip and sash balance units are received in the grooves 60 of the respective sash (see FIG. 3); the sash supports 70 are received under the bottom rails of the respective sashes.
The improved releasable securing or anchoring device of this invention is generally indicated at 100 in the various drawing figures, and in the embodiment illustrated, it takes the form of an elongate strip 102 of relatively stiff material of a resilient nature (such as aluminum, or other suitable substances), having a generally quadrilateral configuration provided with hooked ends 104 similar to the hooked ends 104 described in said U.S. Pat. No. 3,122,798. The hooked ends 104 are formed by doubling over two opposed ends 105 so that they extend toward each other.
Referring specifically to FIGS. 4, 9 and 10, the clip devices 100 of this invention are formed with a prong 106 or tooth intended to be embedded in the blind stop 19 that is associated with the jamb 14 or 16 to which the device 100 is to be applied. The prong 106 is formed at the end portion 104A of the device 100.
The device 100 is also form ed to define a single finger structure 108 that rises out of the strip body 102A and extends generally longitudinally of the strip 102 and is integral with the strip adjacent its end portion 1048. The finger 108 at its projecting end 110 is of special configuration.
It will be noted from FIG. that the finger end portion 1 10 is formed to define an abutment wall 112 against which is seated a spur element 114 including an angled end portion 116 that projects diagonally from the abutment wall 112 forwardly of the device 100 and thus away from the jamb with which the clip device is to be associated. The angled portion 116 of the spur element 114 defines an angled camming surface 118 that is intended to engage the corner 120 of the jamb dado groove 122 when the device 100 is being applied to a dado groove 122.
In accordance with this invention, the clip device 100 is proportioned such that when the clip device 100 is positioned in abutting relation with the jam bs l4 and 16 so as to be disposed crosswise thereof with the prong 106 engaging the blind stop 19, the surface 118 of spur element 114 will engage the inside corner 120 of the dado groove 122. The clip device then may be fixed to the jamb by pressing on the surface 124 of finger 108, which causes the entire clip device 100 to be cammed towards the blind stop as the edge 126 of the spur element end portion 116 is moved past the dado corner 120, thereby embedding the prong 106 in the blind stop. Further finger pressure will move the spur element 114 and abutment wall 112 to the position within the dado groove 122 that is indicated in FIG. 3, the edge 126 of the spur element then acting to bite into the sidewall 128 of the dado groove that faces the blind stop 19 and thus oppose dislodgment of the device 10 from the dado groove.
SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION The improved clip device 100 is appropriately shaped by employing a suitable stamping operation, and while the device is preferably formed from steel, aluminum or their equivalents, any other suitable material may be employed. As indicated in FIGS. 4 and 10, the finger 108 is preferably integral with the main body of strip 102, and is delineated from the main body of the strip as at 130 by the stamping operation. In the specific form shown, the finger projecting end portion 1 10 is turned over on itself and is shaped to define a rectilinear wall portion 132 that forms the abutment wall 122 and has the terminal portion 134 of the finger seated against its undersurface 136. The wall portion 132 merges in a rounded corner 138 into a diagonal reinforcing portion 140 that merges in a rounded corner 142 into the body portion 144 of the finger 108.
As indicated in FIGS. 4, 9 and 10, the finger end portion 110 includes a pair of cars or tab portions and 152 that are disposed, by the bent configuration of the finger end portion 110, for engagement with .the strip body 102A to serve as a stop arrangement for limiting the amount that the finger 108 may be moved relative to the strip body 102A rearwardly thereof or in the direction of the jamb dado groove when the 1 device 10 is mounted in its operative position relative thereto.
The wall portion 132 of the finger end portion 1 10 diverges or tapers transversely of the strip 102, as at 137, to give the finger end portion 110 at its terminous 134 a width that is greater than the width of the finger at the rounded corner 138 (see FIG. 9). The strip body 102A is formed with notches 154 and 156 in which the side edges 158 and 160 of the finger wall portion 132 are disposed for freedom of movement relative to the strip body 102A.
The finger 108 is also formed with a tab portion 162 that is struck from the finger body portion 144 to define spur element 144 in the shape of a wall structure 164 that abuts against the finger end wall portion 132, and to define the angled end portion 116 that defines the cam surface 114 and edge 126 of the spur element.
The outline of the finger 108, in plan, is best shown in FIG. 9 by the margin of the opening 166 that is left when the finger 108 is formed in the manner indicated.
As was the case with the clip device disclosed in said U.S. Pat. No. 3,122,798, the corners of the strip 102 are trimmed off as at 168. The strip 102 may be suitably indented for reinforcement purposes as at 170, while the doubled-over end portions 105 are indented as at 172 to provide a friction grip relationship with the side flanges 62 of the sash balance units. At the base 108A of finger 108, round openings 173 are formed to serve as the end of the separation between finger 108 and strip body 102A to avoid undesirable fractures forming in body 102A due to flexure offinger 108.
In use, the clip devices 100 are preassembled to the respective combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units 24 before application to the window, and this may be done at the point of manufacture of the units 24. With regard to the form of combination Weatherstrip and sash balance unit shown in the application drawings, the angled walls may be formed with an appropriate slot or perforation 175 that is proportioned to receive the respective hooked ends 104. Preferably, two clip devices 100 are applied to each Weatherstrip and sash balance unit 24 in spaced relation therealong, which space exceeds the height of the sash to be employed, and the slots or perforations 175 must be appropriately formed on either side or edge of the respective Weatherstrip and sash balance unit 24 to accommodate the application of the devices 100 to these units.
To apply the clip devices 100 to the units 24, the portions of the respective units 24 that are to carry the clip devices 100 are bent about their longitudinal centers to apply the hooked ends 104 to the respective recesses or perforations 175. In this position, the clip devices 100 give the units 24 the generally curved configuration indicated in FIGS. 6 and 7, and, of course, the resilience of the material from which devices 100 are formed must be such that devices 100 impose this configuration on units 24 when applied thereto. The ends 177 of the perforations 175 prevent the devices 100 from being slid longitudinally of the unit 24.
With the clip devices 100 thus applied in pairs to the respective units 24, the thus equipped units 24 may be sent to the job site, and when it is desired to assemble a window unit in a window frame using the units 24, the builder selects two of the units 24, operatively mounts between the two units 24 the two sash that are to be mounted in the window (and centers the sash between the ends of the two units 24 in question), and places the lower ends of the respective sash units on a sill and within the window being at approximately the location they are to have when the sash are to be operatively positioned in the window.
This will position the sash units, the clip devices, and the sash approximately in the position indicated by FIGS. 5 and 6, and it will be noted from the showing of F IG.'6 that the surface 141 defined by diagonal portion 140 of finger end 110 will then be in a position to slidably engage the respective jambs, for instance, the jambs 16 of FIG. 6, as the sash units are swung to their normal operating vertically disposed position. The curved contour imposed on the unit 24 by the devices 100 disposes the corner portion 142 of the finger end 110 of the respective clips 100 in substantial alignment with a plane passing through the side edges 176 of the unit 24.
The operating sequence is depicted by FIGS. 6, 7 and 8, and as the combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units 24 that are assembled with the sash and the clip devices 100 are swung together toward their vertical positions, that is from the position of FIGS. 5 and 6 through the consecutive positions indicated by FIGS. 7 and 8, the surface 141 of the finger end 110 of the respective device 10 serves to cam the finger end 110 by the corner 174 of the window casing member 176 (assuming that the window assembly is being applied from the inside ofthe window, as is customary in this art).
As it is intended that the finger end portion 110 of the respective clip devices 100 be inserted into the respective dado grooves 122, when the units 24 have been swung to their vertical positions, the finger ends 110 are aligned with the jamb grooves 122 and then pressed into such jamb grooves. This may be done by finger action against the respective units in the area of the devices 100, or by running the sash up and down the units 24.
In so doing, the surface 118 of spur element 114 is pressed against the corner or shoulder 120 of the dado groove, and because of the angled relation of the surface 118 relative to the dado groove, the device 110 being so manipulated is cammed in the direction of the blind stop 19 to press its prong 106 into the blind stop. Pressing is continued until the edge 126 of the spur element 114 snaps by the corner 120 so that the finger end portion 110 may be fully seated in the dado groove 122. The edge portion 126 of the spur element 114 then tends to dig into the sidewall 128 of the dado groove and oppose withdrawal of the clip device 100 in question from the dado groove. This plus the penetration of the prong 106 in the blind stop 19 firmly secures the device 100 to the window frame at two separate points which are spaced apart a distance on the order of one-half the width of the jamb, and against movement longitudinally of the dado groove as well as inwardly or outwardly of same.
After the clip devices 100 are applied in position as described above, the assembled window structure functions in the manner described in Zegers U.S. Pat. No. 2,869,184. If it is desired to remove the sash and Weatherstrip units for any reason, they may be removed in a manner similarly to that described in the said Zegers U.S. Pat. No. 2,869,184, as by horizontally aligning the sashes adjacent the center of the window opening, and then bending the individual sash balance units 24 to remove the side edges thereof from behind the hooked ends 104 of the devices 100. This leaves the devices 100 mounted in place to receive the sash balance units in the manner indicated in said Zegers U.S. Pat. No. 2,869,184.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a simplified clip device that not only adopts the automatic window structure installation aspects described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,122,798, but also improves the securement of the individual clip devices to the window frame while retaining the important operative features disclosed in the basic Zegers U.S. Pat. No. 2,869,184.
The foregoing description and the drawings are given merely to explain and illustrate the invention and the invention is not to be limited thereto, except insofar as the appended claims are so limited, since those skilled in the art who have the disclosure before them will be able to make modifications and variations therein without departing from the scope of the invention.
What is claimed is:
l. A device for securing a combination Weatherstrip and sash balance unit to a window jamb of a window casing, which jamb is of the type formed with an elongate dado groove extending longitudinally thereof along its midportion and defining opposed shoulders extending longitudinally thereof, and including a blind stop extending longitudinally thereof along the portion of same disposed adjacent the outer side of the window, said device comprising:
an anchor member having a length approximating the width of the unit and defining opposed hook portions at the ends thereof with the hook portions being hooked away from the rearward side of the member,
said member defining a prong extending from one end thereofthat is adapted to be embedded in the casing blind stop,
and a resilient finger extending along the midportion of said member from said other end thereof,
said finger at its projecting end defining an abutment facing the other end of said member, and a spur element reinforced by said abutment and including an angled end portion disposed to extend diagonally of said member and positioned relative to said prong so that when said prong is disposed in abutting relation to the blind stop with said rearward side of said member flush with the jamb and extending crosswise of same, said spur element angled portion will camminglyengage the jamb dado groove shoulder opposing the blind stop, and be snapped by same into the dado groove, when said finger end is pressed on its forward side in the direction of its rearward side, and resist removal thereof from the dado groove,
whereby said prong is pressed into the blind stop on pressing said finger spur element into the dado groove by said member being cammed by said spur element in the direction of the blind stop, and said spur element end portion in being lodged in the dado groove maintains said prong in the blind stop.
2. For a window frame including spaced jambs each formed with an elongate vertically disposed dado recess adapted to receive a sash parting stop member and a blind stop along each jamb adjacent the outer side of the window, a device for mounting as a unit in the window frame a window structure including a pair of combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units operatively positioned on either side of a vertically movable sash structure, said device comprising:
a strip of relatively stiff sheet material having hooked end portions proportioned to be received over the side edges of the individual Weatherstrip units with their forward sides facing the respective units,
said strip defining a prong extending from one of its end portions for embedding in one of the blind stops,
and a resilient finger extending lengthwise of the strip and attached to the strip adjacent its other end portion,
with the projecting end ofsaid finger being formed to define an abutment wall facing said other end portion of said strip and extending transversely of said strip,
said finger being formed to define a spur element abutting said abutment wall and extending diagonally thereof in the general direction of said strip forward side and other end portion,
the spacing of said prong relative to said spur element lengthwise of the device being proportioned such that when said device rearward side is placed in abutting relation with the jamb crosswise thereof with said abut ment wall aligned with the dado recess and said prong in engagement with the blind stop, on pressing said finger to pass said abutment wall and spur element into the dado recess, said spur element is cammed against the side of the recess facing the blind stop to force the device in the direction of the blind stop and embed said prong therein,
whereby, when the Weatherstrip units and the sash structure are assembled as a unit, and several of said devices are applied to each of said Weatherstrip units, said unit may be mounted in the window frame by placing the base of the unit in the window frame in substantial alignment with the jamb recesses, swinging the unit as a whole into coplanar relation with said jambs, and pressing the respective device finger abutment walls and spur elements into the dado recesses adjacent same,
whereby in the case of each said device, said prong is pressed into said blind stop, said spur eiement and said abutment wall snap into the dado recess, and said spur element opposes withdrawal thereof from the recess and maintains said prong embedded in the blind stop.
3. The device set forth in claim 2 wherein:
said abutment wall includes a stop element positioned to engage the strip to limit the amount of movement said finger has rearwardly of said strip.
4. In a clip device for removably mounting combination Weatherstrip and sash balance units adjacent window jambs and blind stops, with the jambs being of the type having their sash facing sides formed with a vertically extending dado recess adapted to receive a sash parting member, said device being in the form of an elongate strip of relatively stiff material adapted to be secured to said sides of the respective jambs with the rear side of said strip facing the jamb adjacent it, and the strip extending transversely of the jamb and disposed substantially horizontally, said strip having its ends doubled over on the forward side thereof with the tips of said ends extending generally toward each to define hooked ends under which the side edges of a combination Weatherstrip and sash balance unit are to be received to removably secure the unit to the jamb, and with the strip having a portion thereof formed to be received in said jamb recess when the clipdevice is applied to the jamb to secure he unit against movement in a plane parallel to the plane ofthe jamb, the improvement wherein:
said strip defines a prong extending from the end thereof that is disposed adjacent a window blind stop for embedding in the blind stop,
said strip further defining a resilient finger struck from its midportion and extending lengthwise thereof and merging into the strip adjacent said other end thereof,
with the projecting end of said finger being turned over on itself rearwardly of the strip to define an abutment wall extending transversely of said strip and facing said other end thereof,
said finger being formed to define a tab struck therefrom into abutting relation with said abutment wall and including an end portion angled to extend diagonally from said wall forwardly of said strip,
the spacing of said prong relative to said tab end portion lengthwise of the clip device being proportioned such that when said device rear side is placed in abutting relation with the jamb with said abutment wall and tab aligned with the dado recess and said prong in engagement with the blind stop, on pressing said finger to pass said abutment wall and tab end portion into the dado recess, said tab end portion is cammed against the side of the recess facing the blind stop to force the clip device in the direction of the blind stop and embed said prong therein,
said abutment wall and tab comprising said portion of said strip. r
5. The device set forth in claim 4 wherein:
said finger is further formed on either edge thereof adjacent said abutment wall with an appendage positioned to engage said strip on movement of said finger rearwardly of said strip and limit such movement of same relative to said strip.
6. The device set forth in claim 4 wherein:
said turned over portion of said finger defines a diagonal guide surface for camming said abutment wall past the window frame corner on application of the units to the window jambs.

Claims (6)

1. A device for securing a combination weatherstrip and sash balance unit to a window jamb of a window casing, which jamb is of the type formed with an elongate dado groove extending longitudinally thereof along its midportion and defining opposed shoulders extending longitudinally thereof, and including a blind stop extending longitudinally thereof along the portion of same disposed adjacent the outer side of the window, said device comprising: an anchor member having a length approximating the width of the unit and defining opposed hook portions at the ends thereof with the hook portions being hooked away from the rearward side of the member, said member defining a prong extending from one end thereof that is adapted to be embedded in the casing blind stop, and a resilient finger extending along the midportion of said member from said other end thereof, said finger at its projecting end defining an abutment facing the other end of said member, and a spur element reinforced by said abutment and including an angled end portion disposed to extend diagonally of said member and positioned relative to said prong so that when said prong is disposed in abutting relation to the blind stop with said rearward side of said member flush with the jamb and extending crosswise of same, said spur element angled portion will camminGly engage the jamb dado groove shoulder opposing the blind stop, and be snapped by same into the dado groove, when said finger end is pressed on its forward side in the direction of its rearward side, and resist removal thereof from the dado groove, whereby said prong is pressed into the blind stop on pressing said finger spur element into the dado groove by said member being cammed by said spur element in the direction of the blind stop, and said spur element end portion in being lodged in the dado groove maintains said prong in the blind stop.
2. For a window frame including spaced jambs each formed with an elongate vertically disposed dado recess adapted to receive a sash parting stop member and a blind stop along each jamb adjacent the outer side of the window, a device for mounting as a unit in the window frame a window structure including a pair of combination weatherstrip and sash balance units operatively positioned on either side of a vertically movable sash structure, said device comprising: a strip of relatively stiff sheet material having hooked end portions proportioned to be received over the side edges of the individual weatherstrip units with their forward sides facing the respective units, said strip defining a prong extending from one of its end portions for embedding in one of the blind stops, and a resilient finger extending lengthwise of the strip and attached to the strip adjacent its other end portion, with the projecting end of said finger being formed to define an abutment wall facing said other end portion of said strip and extending transversely of said strip, said finger being formed to define a spur element abutting said abutment wall and extending diagonally thereof in the general direction of said strip forward side and other end portion, the spacing of said prong relative to said spur element lengthwise of the device being proportioned such that when said device rearward side is placed in abutting relation with the jamb crosswise thereof with said abut ment wall aligned with the dado recess and said prong in engagement with the blind stop, on pressing said finger to pass said abutment wall and spur element into the dado recess, said spur element is cammed against the side of the recess facing the blind stop to force the device in the direction of the blind stop and embed said prong therein, whereby, when the weatherstrip units and the sash structure are assembled as a unit, and several of said devices are applied to each of said weatherstrip units, said unit may be mounted in the window frame by placing the base of the unit in the window frame in substantial alignment with the jamb recesses, swinging the unit as a whole into coplanar relation with said jambs, and pressing the respective device finger abutment walls and spur elements into the dado recesses adjacent same, whereby in the case of each said device, said prong is pressed into said blind stop, said spur element and said abutment wall snap into the dado recess, and said spur element opposes withdrawal thereof from the recess and maintains said prong embedded in the blind stop.
3. The device set forth in claim 2 wherein: said abutment wall includes a stop element positioned to engage the strip to limit the amount of movement said finger has rearwardly of said strip.
4. In a clip device for removably mounting combination weatherstrip and sash balance units adjacent window jambs and blind stops, with the jambs being of the type having their sash facing sides formed with a vertically extending dado recess adapted to receive a sash parting member, said device being in the form of an elongate strip of relatively stiff material adapted to be secured to said sides of the respective jambs with the rear side of said strip facing the jamb adjacent it, and the strip extending transversely of the jamb and disposed substantially horizontally, said strip having its ends doubled over on the forward side thereof with the tips of said ends extEnding generally toward each to define hooked ends under which the side edges of a combination weatherstrip and sash balance unit are to be received to removably secure the unit to the jamb, and with the strip having a portion thereof formed to be received in said jamb recess when the clip device is applied to the jamb to secure he unit against movement in a plane parallel to the plane of the jamb, the improvement wherein: said strip defines a prong extending from the end thereof that is disposed adjacent a window blind stop for embedding in the blind stop, said strip further defining a resilient finger struck from its midportion and extending lengthwise thereof and merging into the strip adjacent said other end thereof, with the projecting end of said finger being turned over on itself rearwardly of the strip to define an abutment wall extending transversely of said strip and facing said other end thereof, said finger being formed to define a tab struck therefrom into abutting relation with said abutment wall and including an end portion angled to extend diagonally from said wall forwardly of said strip, the spacing of said prong relative to said tab end portion lengthwise of the clip device being proportioned such that when said device rear side is placed in abutting relation with the jamb with said abutment wall and tab aligned with the dado recess and said prong in engagement with the blind stop, on pressing said finger to pass said abutment wall and tab end portion into the dado recess, said tab end portion is cammed against the side of the recess facing the blind stop to force the clip device in the direction of the blind stop and embed said prong therein, said abutment wall and tab comprising said portion of said strip.
5. The device set forth in claim 4 wherein: said finger is further formed on either edge thereof adjacent said abutment wall with an appendage positioned to engage said strip on movement of said finger rearwardly of said strip and limit such movement of same relative to said strip.
6. The device set forth in claim 4 wherein: said turned over portion of said finger defines a diagonal guide surface for camming said abutment wall past the window frame corner on application of the units to the window jambs.
