FRANCIS D. NELLIS, OF SYRACUSE, NEV YORK.
TOOTH-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 61,775, dated April 26,1887.
Application filed May 10, 1886. Serial No. 201,678. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that l, FRANCIS D. NELLrs, a
, citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Picks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a tooth-pick which shall be durable, and yet capable of having its picking-point bent into various angles, so as to render it operative on the teeth at different points, and from the inner as well as the outer side of the same; and to that end my invention consists of a tooth pick having a pliable projecting point stamped or formed of malleable sheet metal, as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved tooth-pick, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which said toothpick is formed.
In constructing my improved toothpick I stamp out of malleable orpliable sheet metal a blank, A, in the form of an elongated plate, having parallel longitudinal edges 6 e, which terminate convergently at the ends, as shown at a a aa in Fig. 2. The ends a a terminate more abruptly than the opposite end, a a, for the purpose of rendering the former stiffer than the latter. This blank I roll up into the form of an elongated tube, as shown in Fig. 1 of the dr. wings, which tube is thus provided with picking-points at opposite ends.
The malleability or pliability of the metal allows the long point a a to be bent into different angles, as indicated by dotted lines in cure by Letters Patent, is-
Fig. l of the drawings, thereby rendering the tooth-pick capable of operating on the teeth from the inner as well as the outer side thereof, and this characteristic constitutes the essential feature of advantage in my invention, since the angle of the point can be readily changed as desired without injuring the same.
I am aware that tooth-picks have been here- 1. As a new article of manufacture, atoothpick composed of a tube of malleable or pliable sheet metal cut away at one side of its end and terminating with a pliable projecting point on the opposite side of said end, substantially as shown and described.
2. The blank A, consisting of an elongated plate terminating convergently at the end or ends and stamped out of malleable or pliable sheet metal, substantially as set forth.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a toothpick provided with a pliable projecting point stampedor formed from malleable or pliable sheet metal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
FRANCIS n. NELLIS.
