DETAGHABLE POCKET FOR WEARING APPAREL Filed Dec. lO, 1969 BYMM HW ATTUKNEY United States Patent Office Patented Oct. 12, 1971 3,611,444 DETACHABLE POCKET FOR WEARING APPAREL Carl T. Rector, Humboldt County, Calif. (2408 Meadow Laue, Eureka, Calif. 95501) Filed Dec. 10, 1969, Ser. No. 883,766 Int. Cl. A41d 27/20 U.S. Cl. 2-247 6 Claims ABSTRACT -OF THE DISCLOSURE A detachable pocket especially adapted for use with Wearing apparel and comprising a pair of substantially parallel side panels peripherally joined with a substantially continuous seam and having a slit formed through one side panel, the slit providing access into the pocket, said one side having an exterior woolly surface; and-means for mounting said pocket comprising a hooked fabric secured to the article of wearing apparel; whereby an object may be inserted through the slit into said pocket and the pocket attached to the hooked fabric by placing the woolly and exterior surface against said hooked fabric, thereby simultaneously mounting and sealing the pocket.
This invention relates generally to wearing apparel and more particularly to a construction for a detachable pocket.
In brief, the present invention provides a detachable pocket formed of a pair of substantially parallel side panels peripherally joined with a substantially continuous seam and having a slit formed through one side panel. The exterior surface of this side panel is made of a fabric that provides an exterior woolly surface and may be engaged with a hooked fabric secured to an article' of wearing apparel.
One object of the present invention is to provide a detachable pocket that may be used with articles of wearing apparel for carrying small items such as keys or money.
Another object is to provide a detachable pocket of the kind described that may be easily attached and then removed from an article of Wearing apparel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a detachable pocket of the kind described which, after being attached to an article, presents no exposed openings t the pocket.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a detachable pocket of the kind described -which may be selectivel-y attached to a garment, removed from the garment and re-attached many, many times without destroying the tenacity with which the pocket adheres to the garment.
And yet a further object of this invention is to provide a detachable pocket of the kind described which is suitable for use with an underwater garment.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent in view of the following detailed description and the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings forming a part of this4 application and in whichlike parts are identified by like reference numerals throughout the same.
FIG. 1 illustrates a preferred embodiment of this invention as applied in mounting a detachable pocket to an underwater jacket;
FIG. 2 is a section taken through the detachable pocket and the flap to which it is mounted; and
FIG. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the essential components and construction for the detachable pocket and mounting.
Referring to FIG. l, the present invention has particular utility in providing a detachable pocket 1|)I that may be secured to the inner ap 11 of a conventional diving jacket 12. The particular shape and size of pocket is such that it will contain one or several keys, or small amounts of money.
Pocket 10 generally comprises a pair of side panels 13 and 14 peripherally joined with a continuous seam. The one side panel 13 is made from a material which provides a woolly exterior, the character of which will be more particularly described. The other side panel 14 comprises a layered fabric having an inner layer 15 preferably of sponge rubber and exterior layers 16 and 17 made of a smooth, wear resistant material. The two side panels are joined together by means of stitching.
Side panel 13 is more particularly formed with a slit 13a which provides access for inserting an object into the pocket, as shown in FIG. 1. The pocket is then secured to flap 11 by means of a hooked fabric 18. This fabric may be conveniently cemented or stitched to the flap.
The hooked fabric contemplated for use with this invention is made with a plurality of tiny hooks which project outwardly approximately /g inch from a support backing. The tiny hooks may be arranged in rows approximately j/10 inch apart, each row containing approximately 2O hooks per inch of fabric. This type of fabric is commercially sold under the trademark Velco and it is generally known by that same name. It is to be further understood that the woolly material of which side panel 13 is made provides the essential hairs or libers which interlock with the hooks and thereby secure pocket 10 to flap 11. This interlocking relationship is illustrated in FIG. 2.
It is to be noted that once an object has been disposed within pocket 10 and the pocket aflixed to hooked fabric 18, the pocket is effectively sealed and its contents may not be removed until the pocket is detached. Further, the detachable pocket construction herein described may be attached to an item of wearing apparel, removed and reattached many, many times without any noticeable loss in holding strength. It is, therefore, a convenient and dependable means for carrying small items on garments which have no pockets. It may also be used as an auxiliary safety pocket to prevent the loss of small items which might otherwise be carried in an open pocket. Although a single preferred embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described, various modifications and changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, and each of such modifications and changes is contemplated.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with an article of wearing apparel having a hooked fabric secured thereto, a detachable pocket comprising a pair of substantially parallel sides peripherally joined with a substantially continuous seam and having a slit formed through one side, the slit providing access into the pocket, said one side having an exterior woolly surface that engages the hooked fabric to detachably join the pocket to the article of wearing apparel.
2. The combination of claim 1, said article of wearing apparel being an under-water garment having an inner flap to which the hooked fabric is secured.
3. The combination of claim 1, said hooked fabric having a shape and size that complements and is approximately the same as the one side of said pocket.
4. The combination of claim 1, said substantially continuous seam being formed with stitching.
5. The combination of claim 1, the side of said pocket opposite to said one side being made of a layered fabric .comprising an inner layer of sponge rubber and outer layers of a smooth, wear-resistant material.
`6. In combination, a detachable pocket having a pair of substantially parallel sides peripherally joined with a substantially continuous seam, a slit formed through one side 3 of said pocket that provides access into the pocket, said one side having an exterior woolly surface; and means for mounting said pocket comprising a hooked fabric; Whereby an object may be inserted through the slit into said pocket and the pocket attached to said hooked fabric by placing the woolly exterior surface against said fabric, thereby simultaneously mounting and sealing said pocket.
