DZlf 1/02 U.S. Cl. 162-212 7 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The method and apparatus for applying high frequency vibrations on the slice lips of a paper machine for example so as to obtain improved smooth flow of the paper stock from the slice. The vibration may be applied directly to the lips to move them or vibration of the lips may be induced by driving the liquid through the lips at the resonant frequency of the lips.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the invention This invention relates in general to paper machines and in particular to the slice lip of a papermaking machine.
Description of the prior art Paper machines comprise a pressure head box and with an output slice formed with lips which allow the stock to flow from the head box into the papermaking machine. At times the stock tends to clog or flow unevenly from the lips of the paper machine which can result in variations in thickness and strength of the manufactured paper.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention comprises a head box of a paper machine for example which has slice lips to which the method of using a high frequency vibration is applied to improve the flow and operation of the slice lips. The vibration may be applied to the lips by directly forcing the lips to vibrate with a high frequency vibration generator or alternatively by inducing vibration of the lips by causing pulsations in the paper stock passing the lips. Pulsation in the paper stock at the resonant frequency of the lips will cause the lips to vibrate and thus result in the improved operation of the paper machine. The method of improved flow from a head box of a paper machine by moving the lips of the slice is disclosed.
Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent from the following detailed description of certain preferred embodiments thereof taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a partial diagrammatic view of a paper machine showing the head box and slice lips with the invention for vibrating the slice lips installed therein; and
FIG. 2 is a diagrammatic view of an additional method and apparatus for vibrating the slice lips of a paper machine.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS In the embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the paper machine a fragment of the forming end portion of the paper machine is illustrated and includes a head box 10 which has an inlet conduit 11 and includes an agitator roller 12 mounted within the head box and driven by suitable driving means (not shown) to agitate the paper stock. An output slice is formed from lips 13 and 14 which extend from the lower portion of the head box 10 and the paper stock passes through the slice lips 13 and 14 on to a Fourdrinier wire 16 which passes over a breast roll 17.
The present invention relates to the method and apparatus for vibrating the lips 13 and 14 so as to obtain a smooth and uniform flow from the head box onto the papermaking machine. As shown in FIG. 1 a suitable vibrator generator 18 is mounted by a bracket 19 to the wall of the head box 10 and has an output coupling 21 which is connected by bracket 22 to the lip 13 to vibrate the lip. The vibrating driving means 18 might, for example, be a permeability tuned oscillator which may be adjusted over a frequency range by an output shaft 23 which carries a knob 24. The output of the oscillator 18 is converted into mechanical energy and drives the shaft 21 so as to cause the lips 13 and 14 to vibrate. The resonant frequency of the lips 13 and 14 can be determined by varying the output of the oscillator 18 until noticeable vibration occurs in the lips 13 and 14. At this frequency improved flow of the paper stock will occur from the head box onto the Fourdrinier wire 16.
FIG. 2 illustrates a modification of the invention wherein an electro-mechanical transducer 26 is mounted in the head box on the bottom wall 27 or in another suitable location and is electrically connected by leads 28 and 29 to a suitable oscillator 31 which has an output shaft 32 that carries a tuning knob 33. The transducer 26 may be, for example, of the type utilized in sonar or other underwater transponders.
The output end 34 of the transponder is placed so as to face the lips 13 and 14 so that the paper stock on the side facing the lips 13 and 14 will be subjected to a pulsation caused by the output of the transducer 26. Such pulsations will act upon the lips 13 and 14 and when at the resonant frequency of the lips 13 and 14 will cause them to have substantial movement. This point may be obtained by varying the frequency of the oscillator 31 with the knob 33 until movement is observed of the lips 13 and 14.
It is seen that this invention comprises apparatus and the method for inducing high frequency vibrations in the lips of a slice so as to obtain improved fiow past the lips.
The principles of the invention explained in connection with the specific exemplifications thereon will suggest many other applications and modifications of the same. It is accordingly desired that in construing the breadth of the appended claims they shall not be limited to the specific details shown and described in connection with the exemplification thereof.
