UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFI E.
JABEZ ALEXANDER, OF MANCHESTER, HAMPSHIRE.
VETERINARY FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,616, dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed June 15, 1886. Serial No. 205,253. (No model.)
'Manchester, in the county of Hiilsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Adjusters or Files for Treating the Teeth of Horses and other Animals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to farriers or veterinary surgeons horse dentists instruments,
- and particularly to such appliances as are used for the filing or adjustment of the teeth of horses and other animals.
My invention has for its object to so improve the construction of such devices that the file portion of the instrument may have a limited rocking motion with respect to the handle to automatically adjust itself to the teeth to be treated.
To this end my invention consistsin the improvements, which I will now proceed to describe, so that those skilled in the art may be able to make and use the same, the invention being particularly set forth in the claims hereto appended.
' Of the drawings accompanying and forming a part ofthis specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved implement. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sec-. tional view, the upper portion of the handle being broken off. Fig. 3 represents a rear view, the upper portion of the handle being broken off. Fig. 4 represents a bottom plan View of the head or float, a file being held in position therein.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all of the figures:
In carrying out my invention, I pivot the head or float a to the handle b, forming a slot or groove, 0, in the heel of the float,wh1ch slot at the pivotal point 61 extends entirely through the-head. The head a has a dovetail groove formed in its under side, into which the file e is fitted, preferably so as to be wedged therein, the groove being slightly narrower at its forward than at its rear end or heel, and the inclined edges of the file being shaped accordingly, so that no set-screws or similar contrivances are necessary to hold the file in place,
whih contrivances complicate the construction and increase the cost of the device, besides creating means which are liable to injure the horses mouth.
The end of the handle b beyond the pivot d is rounded or cam-shaped, so that it may 5 be raised from a position parallelwith the head, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to a position forming, say, an angle of forty degrees with respect thereto, as shown in full lines in the last-mentioned figures, and when in this position the rounded or cam-shaped end of the handle will bear upon the back of the file, limiting the rocking motion of the head on the handle.
By the construction specified, in filing or adjusting a horses teeth the file may always be held fiat upon the teeth, even though the animal should move its head, as it is liable to do, owing to the treatment. Perfect work is thereby secured, and liability of injuring the teeth or other parts of the mouth avoided.
I do not confine myself or expect to be confined to the precise form and arrangement of the parts shown and described, as these may be varied within thelimits of mechanical skill without departing from the spirit of the invention, the essential feature of which is the construction by which the head or float is permitted to have a limited rocking movement on the handle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- ,1. Atooth-adjuster or file for treating the teeth of horses and other animals, consisting of a head provided in its upper side with the slot 0, a handle pivoted at one end to said head in said slot to have a limited rocking motion therein, and a file, e, secured to the other side of said head, as and for the pur poses hereinbefore set forth.
2.'The combination, with the head a, provided with the slot 0, and having a dovetail groove on its under side, the file 6, adapted to fit said groove, and the handle b, pivoted to the head in the slot 0, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 29th day of May,
J ABEZ ALEXANDER.
