Reilly ABSTRACT: A single bent wire has a vertical body with an upper forward section at the top of which a urine drainage tubing is releasably secured in adjusted positions longitudinally thereof to hold a drip chamber, which is upstream of a urinary drainage bag, in an erect position. An arm extending rearwardly from said upper forward section engages a support member to suspend said hanger. A hook at the lower end of a lower and rearward section of said body suspends a urine collecting bag in a plane transversely and substantially midway between the front and rear ends of said arm.
Patented 22, 1970 r INVCNTORS JR LEONARD F; WALDMAN' DAVID G. QUINN JOSEPH-I Wool) QWMW ATM URINE COLLECTING ASSEMBLY AND HANGERFOR SAME The present invention relatesto a urine collecting assembly and a hanger fora urinary drainage bag comprising said assembly.
A urinary drainage bag of the type comprehended by this invention is adapted for fluid connection to apatient for collecting urine and for periodic removal of collectedurine. To that end a urine collecting assembly also includes inlet means comprising a length of tubing for translocating urine from a patient to a urinary drainage bag, and outlet means for intermittently draining the bag. Hanger means are also included in the assembly for suspending the bag from a patient andfrom a suitable station, generally a bed on which the patient may be required to repose during at least a portion of the time when he is connected to the urinary drainage bag. At least one heretofore available urine collecting assembly has a drip chamber in its inlet means for interrupting the continuity of the fluid path between its urinary drainage bag and a patient to provide a dry barrier for preventing bacterial transfer from the bag to the patient. In its functional aspect a drip chamber is erect or vertically disposed.
A conventional hanger for a urinary drainage bag is rather large, being adapted to engage opposite drainage bag sides. This feature impedes easy mounting and removal of a bag from a bed, and renders a urinecollecting assembly unwieldy when accompanying a patient away from a bed. Moreover, a conventional hanger is not adapted for holding adrip chamber .in an erect or functional position. As a consequence some other expedient must be provided if a drip chamber is included in a urine collecting assembly as the length of tubing with which a drip chamber is associated generates a force tending to carry the drip chamber into a horizontal position.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an ,improved urine collecting assembly.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved hanger for a urinary drainage bag comprising said assembly.
It is another object of the invention to minimize the cost of a hanger for a urinary drainage bag.
It is additionally an object of the invention to hold .a drip chamber erect when its urine collecting assembly is operably conditioned. 1 v
Additionally, it is an object of the invention to facilitate hanging of a urinary drainage bag on a" bed and managing such bag when accompanying a patient away from a bed.
Moreover, it is an object of the invention to hold the length of tubing comprising inlet means to a urinary drainage bag at an aspect which provides a free path from a patient to the bag.
A yet further object of the invention is to stabilize a urinary drainage bag when hung in a urine collecting aspect.
Features of the invention by which the foregoing objects are effected include a urine collection assembly comprised of a urinary drainage bagand inlet means for translocating liquid from a patient to said bag. A drip chamber is included in said inlet means and provides when disposed in an erect aspect a dry barrier between said ha and the patient. Also eomprising the urine collecting assent ly are .out'let means for draining sai basses! hsnsstmi n to! s pen in said ag a o ing said drip chamber erect.
the invention will become more apparent upon consideration of thefollowing description and appended claims, when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein the same reference character or numeral refers to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views.
On the'drawings z FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a urine collection assembly embodying the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a hanger comprising said urine collecting assembly.
Referring now more particularly to the FIG. 1, there is shown a urine collection assembly 10 which comprises a urinary drainage bag 11 having an upper inlet portion 12 and a lower outlet portion 13. Inlet means 14 is arranged in fluid The foregoing and other objects, features and advantages of delivery association with bag 11 for thereto translocating urine from a patient. To that end, inlet means 14 comprises a length of plastic flexible .urine drainage inlet tubing IS the downstream portion 16 of which may be heatsealed to inlet portion 12 in fluid communication with bag 11. A drip chamber 17, which may be constructed according to US. Pat. No. 3,100,490 and interposed in length of tubing 15 between its downstream portion 16 and its upstream portion 18, requires maintenance in an erect position to provide a dry barrier between bag 11 and a patient. Outlet means 20 which comprises a length of flexible urine drainage tubing of plastic fabrication has an upper end portion 19 heat sealed into outlet extension 13 for fluid communication with bag 11. A suitable clamp 21, the details of construction of which are not critical to the present invention is mounted on the length of tubing 20 for controlling drainage from bag 11.
Urine assembly 10 includes hanger means comprising a hanger 22 which is adapted for suspending bag from conventional hanger support such as right angular bed rail 27 and for holding drip chamber 17in an erect position. Hanger 22 comprises a body 23 which is disposed in a vertical plane and isdeflned by an upper forward section 33 and a lower section 34 rearwardly offset from and parallel to forward section 33. A hook 24 for suspending bag 11 is fashioned on the lower end of lower section 34 and is adapted to engage in an aperture 25 which is formed approximately midway between opposite sides of bag 11 in its upper end portion. Hanger 22 maybe formed from a single wire strand which maybe fabricated from spring steel. It is fashioned with integral support engaging means 26 which extends normally-from body 23, said support engaging means projecting rearwardlyfrom a medial portion of upper body section 33for supportive association with the top of bed rail 27. Hook 24, by reason of its association with lower section 34, is offset from forward section 33. Said hook is also disposed in a vertical plane with support engaging means 26, for suspending bag 11 in a plane extending transversely of, and substantially midwaybetween opposite ends, of a straight arm 30 which comprises support engaging means26 and is disposed medially of thetop and bottom of body 23.
An integral holding part 28 which projects above hook-24 from the top of forward body section 33 is adapted for supporting inlet tubing 15 in an adjusted position extending trans-, versely of support engaging means 26. This feature permits control for preventing failure of fluid flow due to bending of the inlet tubing downstream of hanger 22. Holding part 28 is fashioned as a downwardly opening eyelet 2 9 which is proportioned for frictionally and releasably retaining upstream portion 18 in adjusted condition longitudinally of tubing I5. Thereby, the tension on tubing 15 can be adjusted to hold drip chamber 17 erect and bag 11 can be stabilized in a balanced condition. v
If hanger 22 is fabricated of spring steel, a spring clamp will be formed below holding part 28 as a result of the proximity of forward section 33 and an integral generally vertical section 3]. The latter connects holding part 28 and arm 30 and with forward section 33 defines a throat 32 which leads from eyelet 29. Throat 32 is proportioned to stop free flow through inlet means 14 when tubing upstream portion 18 is drawn from the solid to the dotted line position of FIG. 1.
Because hanger 22 can be formed by bending a single wire strand substantial economics can be achieved in the cost of hangers for urinary drainage bags. This factor is now espe-.
cially significant because of the present dissatisfaction with increasing costs of medical treatment. Moreover, hanger 22 increases efficiency in bag management not only with respect to hanging and removal from a bed support but also with respect to hanging from the body of a patient.
