UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK HULLHORST, OF'YUTAN, NEBRASKA.
OBSTETRICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 352,245,6iated November 9, 1886.
Application filed August 21:1886. Serial No, 211,515. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known'that I, FREDERICK HULL- HORST, of Yutan, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Obstetrical Instruments, of which the following is afull; clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in an instrument organized to both tie and cut the umbilical cord after birth, substantially as hereinafter described.
- This instrument, from the nature of the work performed, I denominate the Umbilicus Ligamputator.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this-specification, and which represents a view in perspective of an instrument embodying my invention.
. Thecharacteristic feature of the instrument is the combination, in one and the same handtool, of a clamping means for tying the umbilical cord by closing metal clamps or ligatures on or about it, and an interposed cutter for severing the cord between the closed clamps. These clamping means and cutter I prefer to construct in lever form,which is the construction shown in the drawing; but this is not absolutely necessary, as either the clamping means or cutter, or both, might be made to havea direct or straight line of action. I I
A A indicate two levers arranged to cross each other in the form of ,a pair of pinchers, the same being pivoted at b, and constituting handles a a on the one or rear side of the pivot andjaws c c on the front side of the pivot. These jaws c 0 have each a pair of grooves, cl d, made down within them from their outer ends, arranged at a suitable distance apart, and so that thegroovesin the onejaw face those inthe other jaw. These jaws form the clamping means of the instrument used in tying the umbilical cord.
B is a lever-cutter, which may also be fitted to work upon the same pivot,'b, or it may be fitted to turn upon a separate pivot. This lever-cutter is arranged to'work in between the levers A A, and is constructed at its forward end to form a cutting-blade, e, and its rear portion a handle, f, the cutting-blade e being arranged to work between the grooves d d in the clamping jaws and to enter intermediate grooves, g, in said jaws in its closing or cutting and return movements.
The tying of the umbilical cord is done by introducing within the grooves 11 (2 suitable metal clamps or ligatures, which may either be bent square or round, and which are closed on or about the umbilical cord by working the levers A A so as to shut to the jaws c 0. With the same action, or immediately afterward, by suitably manipulating the lever B with a tiuger or fingersof the hand holding the instrument, the blade or cutter e is operated to cut the cord between the clamps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. An instrument for tying by means of clamps or ligatures, and cutting,the umbilical cord after birth, the same consisting of clamping-jaws arranged to move the one toward the other, and an interposed cutter intermediate of the width of the jaws, whereby the same instrument by its clamping-jaws closes the clamps or ligatu-res on or about the cord, and
by its cutter severs the cord between the clamps or ligatures, substantially as specified;
2. In an instrument for tying and cutting the umbilical cord after birth, the combination of the levers A A, provided with jaws c 0, having grooves d d, adapted to receive clamps or ligatures within them, and the lever B, having a cutting-blade, 6, arranged to work in between said grooves, essentially as shown and described.
