UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
GEORGE IV. COOK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MERRICK CUMMINGS, OF SAME PLACE.
ROPE CHECKYOR LOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent; No. 349,031, dated September 14,1886.
Application filed August 19, 1385. Serial No. 174,843. (Model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. COOK, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope Checks or Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts. y
In said drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central hori- Zontal section ofthe same, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of one of the parts.
In said drawings, the letter A represents the frame, which is to be secured, by bolts or otherwise, to the window sash or door. It is provided at either side with upright flanges a. The front piece, B, rests in these flanges, and is provided with lugs or projections b, to fit in the notch in the top of said iianges c, as shown in Fig. 2. The plate B is secured, by the rivet b or otherwise, to the frame A, and when so secured affords room betweensaid plate and said frame corresponding to the height of the flange a. I provide two latches, C,which I hold in place by the same rivet which secures the plate B to the frame A. These latches C are provided each with a corrugated cam-lug, c, and are made so as to overlap each other, and so as to permit the cani-lug portion to be fully as high as the ange a..
Between the Lwo inner surfaces of thelatches C C, I make annular grooves c, one in each latch, to receive a coil-spring, D. The ends of this spring project outwardly 'from each other, and press against the two contiguous faces of the cam-lug, thus tending to force said lugs apart, as illustrated in Eig. 3. Ris? ing vertically from said lugs are the thumbpieces c. The front piece, B, is provided with aslot or opening, through which the thumblatches c pass. An additional rivet or pin is placed as shown at E, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned, and also to aid in securing the parts together.
In operating my invention the cord or rope is inserted at either side of the pin E, passed down between the .flange a and the corrugated cam-lug c, against the pressure of the spring D. Power applied to the rope in the opposite direction forces the corrugated portions of the lug into the rope and presses the rope against the flange a, thus securely locking it. When two ropes are used, as in Eig. I, it sometimes happens that the ropes become twisted and entangled and seek to enter the locking device in that condition. rIhe pin E is used for the purpose of separating the ropes, thus allowing the perfect working of the lock.
Vhat I desire to claim and secure by Letl` ters Patent isl. In a rope check or lock, the combination of the frame A, provided with vertical ilanges a c on either side, the cap B, resting on said flanges a c, the overlapping cam-latches C C,
placed between said frame A and cap B, and
having in each a groove or recess, c2', the bolt or rivet b, securing said frame, cap, and latches together, and the spring D, placed in said groove c2 around said rivet b', having its ends project against said latches to force them in opposite directions against said flanges a a, substantially as speciiied.
2. In a rope catch or lock, the combination of the frame A, cap B, and latches C C, all secured bythe saine bolt or rivet, b",with the spring D, said latches being each provided with a corrugated cani-edge, the thickness whereof shall correspond with the space between the face of the frame A and the under face of the cap B,while the remaining portion shall be about one-half that thickness, so that the latches overlap each other, each latch being also provided with a vertically-projecting thumb-piece, c', extending through proper openings in the cap B, whereby a rope or cord ot' as large diameter as the thickness of the corrugated portion of the latch C may be used, all operating substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE NV. COOK.
