Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Aug. 30, 1967, Ser. No. 664,564 Int. Cl. G09f 3/08, 7/08 U.S. Cl. 40-129 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A means for mounting a monogrammed label or the like in the area of the breast pocket of a garment, such area providing two plies of material, the means, in particular, including the provision of a pair of narrow, vertical slits in the outer of the two plies. The lateral edges f the label is inserted through the slits and are frictionally held between the plies of material causing the monogram portion of the label to overlie the outer ply between the slits where it is easily visible.
This invention relates in general to Wearing apparel and, more particularly to the application and use of monograms, initials and similar individualistic designs on various garments such as shirts, pajamas, jackets, robes and other garments provided with pockets on which it is popular practice to attach a design such as the monogram emblem or initials of the wearer.
According to the present invention, an individualized monogram is adapted to be easily and removably mounted in a conspicuous location on a garment at the time of purchase, thus precluding the delay which is frequently occasioned where the monogram is attached as by sewing in a more permanent fashion. It is contemplated that the monogram is thus mounted in the area of the breast pocket of the garment and specifically the top portion thereof where it is double plied. A pair of vertical slits is formed in the superficial or outer layer which receives the side portions of the monogram. As a consequence, the monogram is maintained in place frictionally 'by virtue of the disposition of its lateral areas between the plies of the pocket flap. The intermediate portion of the monogram bearing the embroidered initials or the like, overlies the pocket and is thus easily seen. The wearer may, of course, optionally remove the monogram in which event the two slits are the only visible evidence that the garment is especially adapted for monogram application.
One object of the invention is to provide an economical means for readily applying a monogram or label to a garment, dispensing with the use of pins, stitching, adhesives, snap fasteners and the like which are in present use, for a permanent monogram attachment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention may be appreciated on reading the following description of one embodiment thereof which is taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a view showing a grament pocket designed in accordance with the invention concept and a separated monogram;
ice
FIG. 2 is a similar View showing the monogram inserted in the garment; and
FIG. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Referring to the drawings, FIG. l illustrates a garment 4, such as a sport shirt, pajarna top, lounging jacket or robe, or any other article of wearing apparel having a pocket 6 provided on a body portion 8 of the garment in any suitable manner as by stitching 10. From the top edge of the pocket ap down to the stitch line a it is two plied comprising an outer layer 12 and an inner layer 14.
There is formed in the outer layer 12, a pair of slits 15 and 16, the sides of which are button hole stitched. As shown in FIG. 2 and FIG. 3, monogram label 18 is applied to the garment pocket by disposing opposite sides thereof between the outer and inner layers of the pocket. The application is effected by inserting the sides into and through the slits 15 and 16 respectively. The monogram portion of the label is thus caused to overlie the outer layer 12 of the pocket where it is easily visible.
Due to the fact that the anking edges of the label 18 are held between the layers, it is seen that it will not be disturbed by objects held in the pocket such as handkerchiefs. The label is easily removed in which case the narrow slits are exposed but remain relatively inconspicuous and do not detract from the appearance of the garment. If the monogram depicts an activity such as golf, tennis or sailing, labels are made available to the retailer and buyer as a pre-embroidered ensumble which the buyer is furnished and uses according to the sport which engages his interest while the garment is worn.
Various modications of the invention may be elected by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope and principle thereof as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In an article of wearing apparel, a portion of said article having an inner and an outer ply of material, a pail of slits formed in the outer ply, a monogram label, the opposing edges of which are disposed between the plies and extended through said slits, the central or intermediate portion of said label overlying said outer ply.
2. In an article of apparel as defined in claim 1, wherein the double plied portion is formed in an outer breast pocket of said article.
