IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING HINGE-JOINTS 0R COUPLING-SHAFTS 0F WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,553, dated February 25, 1862.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIAS W. SEYMOUR, of Centre Lisle, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and improved shifting hinge-joint or coupling for the purpose of coupling bars of iron together for deep drilling, or fastening thills and poles to vehicles, or for gate and barn-door hangings, or hinging anything together for which it may used; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of myinvention consists in constructing a hinge-joint or coupling in such a manner that by elevating or turning that part of the hinge which enters the slot of the barrel and pivot, which revolves in the barrel part of the hinge at a certain angle, it will enter said slot, and then by operating upon them as a lever forms the joint and securely attaches the hinge.

When the joint is used for a thill-fastener, it will be observed that by elevating the thills perpendicular and pushing them either to the right or left they will remain upright.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 Will proceed to describe its construstion and operation from the drawing and letters thereon.

A is a round barrel one and one-quarter inch in diameter and two inches long.

B is the hole to admit of the pivot O. Said pivot O can be made either of metal, hide, or rubber.

D is the slot in the pivot O.

E is the slot in the barrel running lengthwise.

F is the slot running around the barrel from the slot running lengthwise.

G is the shoulder to enter the slot E in the barrel, and also in the slot D in the pivot.

H is the arm of the shoulder G.

I is the arm of the barrel A, and by putting them together, as above described, and turning the arm H as a lever in the slot it forms the joint.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A shifting hinge joint or coupling constructed in the following manner, to wit: the combination of the barrel A, with the pivot O, and slot D, with the arm Hand its shoulders G, as and for the purposes herein described.
