Description

March 25, 1969 R. D. KACHMAN 3,434,535
POURER FOR LIQUOR BOTTLES Filed May 16, 1967 INVENTOR v ROBERT D. KACHMAN BY zw w wgami ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,434,636 POURER FOR LIQUOR BOTTLES Robert D. Kachman, 1526 Beverly, Madison Heights, Mich. 48071 Filed May 16, 1967, Ser. No. 638,794 Int. Cl. B65d 25/52 US. Cl. 222-567 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A pourer having a hollow body which may be of spherical form, including a laterally directed spout, and opposed therefrom a tubular shank and including a cylindrical collar with an apertured web snugly positioned over said shank adjacent the body, the collar adapted to loosely enclose the outlet of a liquor bottle, and a centrally apertured plastic cork body assembled over said shank and having a flange to seal over the outer edge of the bottle outlet and a series of flexible deformable ribs adapted to sealingly engage the interior of the bottle outlet.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved pourer with spout and vent seal by which when not in use there is provided a floatable seal within the pourer body which is adapted to seal over the passageway to the housing shank in an automatic manner as the liquid after pouring drains back into the bottle.
It is another object to provide a novel form of pourer including a pair of opposed hemispherically shaped body elements adapted to be interconnected to provide a vented pourer and adapted for use in conjunction with a plastic deformable cork nested down into the bottle opening and with means for interlocking the pourer shank with the cork so that both may be removed together from the bottle.
It is another object to provide a cylindrical collar adapted for assembly over the pourer shank providing a means of stripping the cork from said shank.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a novel plastic cork assembly which is adapted not only to seal over the outer edge of the bottle outlet but to yieldably seal over the interior surface of the bottle outlet.
These and other objects will be seen from the following specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of the present pourer with assembled cork mounted over the outlet end of a liquor bottle, fragmentarily shown.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal section of the cork.
It will be understood that the above drawing illustrates merely a preferred embodiment of the invention and that other embodiments are contemplated within the scope of the claims hereafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing the present pourer 11 includes a hollow body 12, which in the illustrative embodiment is of spherical form consisting of top hemispherical section 13 and including the laterally directed spout 14 with outlet 15. Top section 13 also includes at its open edge the annular assembly flange 16 adapted to cooperatively nest within and be secured within a corresponding assembly flange 18 at the free upper edge of the bottom hemispherical pourer section 17.
Transverse vent 19 is formed through bottom section 17 diametrically opposed from the spout 14,
Bottom section 17 at its central axis terminates in the elongated depending shank 20 of tubular form and providing the passage 21 adapted for projection down into the outlet end 34 of bottle 33, fragmentarily shown.
Annular tapered flange 22 projects from the lower end 3,434,636 Patented Mar. 25, 1969 of shank 20 adapted for cooperative retaining registry with the plastic cork 27 hereafter described.
A plastic float seal 23 of disc shape is nested Within the pourer body 12. Said disc is preferably made of polypropylene or any other suitable plastic having a suflicient specific gravity less than the liquor or other liquid to be poured so that it is adapted to float out of the way when the pourer is being used and is furthermore adapted to reseal at the inlet end of the passage 21 after pourer and as the liquor or other liquid drains back into the bottle 33.
Thus, the float seal 23 is adapted to seal off the bottle contents completely automatically when the pourer is not in use. This is important to completely seal liquor bottles when they are not in use to thus prevent evaporation or accidental loss of essential oils found in most liquors for flavor and to give the poured drink a head.
Cylindrical collar 24 of a plastic material includes a transverse web 25 adjacent one end which is centrally apertured and adapted for slidable positioning over the shank 20 adjacent pourer body 12, as shown in FIG. 1, the said collar being adapted to loosely enclose the bottle outlet 34 when assembled as shown.
The collar web 25 includes an annular sealing flange 26 adapted to cooperatively register with a corresponding top flange 30 at one end of the cork assembly 27, shown in detail in FIG. 2.
Said cork assembly includes an elongated tubular plastic body 28 of a suitable plastic material such as polyethylene or polypropylene which includes elongated central bore 29 adapted to snugly receive pourer shank 20 in the manner shown in FIG. 1.
Transverse radial flange 30 at one end of body 28 extends radially outward thereof and terminates in the annular upturned flange 31, adapted to register with the undersurface of collar web 25 and seal thereagainst.
The cork assembly includes upon the plastic shank 28 a series of longitudinally spaced annular radially extending flexible ribs 32, which are furthermore resilient and on assembly are deformed as shown in FIG. 1 for cooperative sealing registry within bottle outlet 34.
By the present construction tapered flange 22 in view of its taper at the lower end of shank 20 is easily projected down through the plastic flexible cork 27 so that the said flange 22 retainingly engages the lower edge portion of the cork body 28. By this construction the cork as well as the tubular shank 20 and the connected pourer are removed as a unit and thus the cork is not accidentally retained within the bottle due to such interlock, FIG. 1.
At the same time the collar 24 sealingly engages the cork as at the annular flange 31, as well as at the web flange 25 and furthermore facilitates stripping of the cork from the shank 20.
In the illustrative form of invention the pourer body is of spherical form and in view of its vent aperture 19, there is no need for the conventional vent groove, which is normally arranged along the external diameter of the pourer shank, being also diametrically opposed to the spout 14-15.
While the plastic flanged cork 27 is shown in the illustrative form of the invention, it is contemplated that any ordinary apertured cork could be employed and adapted to receive the pourer shank 20 projected down thereinto.
The collar 24 performs the further function of enclosing the liquor bottle threads at the outlet 34 to provide a neat appearance.
Having described my invention reference should now be had to the following claims.
