(Cl. 30-330) ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE The holder for stropping razor blades is formed of two members pivoted together in scissors like manner. When opened, a blade receiving recess is exposed on top of the lower blade which has pins upstanding to receive and position a double-edged blade with one edge exposed. The upper member is notched to receive the pins, the pins acting as a stop when the two members are swung into alignment. The recess is deep enough at its rear end to protect the unexposed edge of the blade as the two members are swung from the open (receiving) position to the aligned position. The depth of the recess reduces forwardly to clamp the blade along the edges of the members nearest the exposed edge. The cross-section of the assembly in clamping position resembles that of a straight edge razor.
This invention relates to a razor blade holder for honing and stropping it and even for shaving, if desired, and is particularly intended for double-edged razor blades although it will also accommodate single-edged blades with an opposite stiffened edge if the latter is not too thick.
An important object of the invention is to seat and pro tect one edge of a double-edged razor blade or to receive the stiiened edge of a single-edged blade, when the other cutting edge of the blade projects from their side edges of the holder for sharpening, honing and shaving.
Important objects of the invention are: to provide a shears type of two piece holder having a central pivot upon which two ilat strips swing to enclose a razor blade at one end between them when handle parts at the opposite ends are swung together; to provide a gradually deepening recess at one inner side of one strip extending to one edge -with the deepest portion spaced from the opposite edge to form a protection ridge for the blade; to provide projections eccentric transversely in the recess to project one edge of a blade to be used from the holder; to similarly graduate the thicknesses of the blade holding strips oppositely and transversely so they are very thin at the edges from which a lblade projects to facilitate sharpening and shaving and thicker at the opposite edges which combine to simulate actual razor shape, for indicat ing the use and application of the holder in honing and in shaving; and in providing slots in the strip opposite the projections which open from the thinner edge and seat the projections therein with the strips directly opposite and in alignment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will ap pear in the specication and will be apparent from the drawings, in which: FIG. l is a plan view of a two piece razor blade holder in accordance with my invention; FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the holder of FIG. l, in closed position; FIG. 3 shows an open position of the holder with a blade seated in a recess of one strip retaining it therein by means of eccentric projections; FIG. 4 is a section of the two strips taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3 with a blade therebetween showing their side edges and opposite thicker edges together resembling a razor blade in cross section; and FIG. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 3 through one of the blade holding projections.
This holder closely resembles a scissors in operation since the two pieces are pivoted together near their longitudinal centers dividing them into handle portions and blade gripping portions. Actually one piece has a recess at the inner side into which a blade is inserted with one edge projecting from one edge of the piece and the other edge within and protected by a ledge of the recess, the blade lbeing held thus transversely eccentric by projections for centrally engaging a blade, and the blade when thus positioned being engaged and retained by closing the scissors and thus clamping the other blade gripping portion against a blade inserted in the holder recess.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings; two strip scissors holder parts `10 and 12 are joined near their longitudinal centers by a pivot 14 which divides each into a handle portion 16 and a blade holding portion 18 or 20 respectively. The two holder parts 10 and 12 are preferably made of strap metal but may be of plastic or other material.
One holder part 10` is formed with a recess 22 graduated in depth from practically nothing at one edge 24 toits greatest depth 26 near the opposite edge of the part 10 leaving a ledge 28 spaced slightly therefrom. At its greatest depth 26, it is about that of the thickness of a doubleedged razor blade 30 so that at the other or thinner edge 24 the closing thereon of the other part 12 will engage and clamp the blade 30 between the scissor parts 10 and 12.
These razor blades 30 are formed with corresponding central longitudinal openings 32 which adapt them to engage two transversely eccentric holder pins 34 projecting from the bottom of the recess 22 near each end thereof and extending or protruding therefrom. an amount greater than the ordinary thickness of one of one blade to be engaged by the other holder part 12. This permits each blade to be inverted or changed end for end in the recess 22.
To receive and accommodate the upper ends of the holder pins 34 in the holder part 20 it is formed with recesses 36 and 38 at the leading edge to register with the pins 34 when the scissors holder parts are closed upon each other in register. The approaches to these recesses preferably have flaring sides 40 which .more readily adapt the holder part 12 to swing relatively to the other part 10 and to seat the upper ends of the pins 34 in the recesses 36 and 38, and to disengage them therefrom.
In order t-o facilitate the honing (or shaving) operation, the holder por- tions 18 and 20 are preferably thicker at one edge than at the other. The holder 18 is thicker at one edge to accommodate the graduated recess 20 leaving the ledge 28 of greatest thickness. The other holder portion 20 is thinner at the edge where the recesses 36 and 38 have the flaring sides 40, the opposite edge having about the same thickness as the thicker edge ofthe holder portion 18. Pins 34 act as a stop to limit the pivotal movement between the scissors Iholder parts 10l and 12 as shown in FIG. 3. They also serve to position a razor blade within the recess so that the edge of the blade cannot contact the back wall of the recess, as shown in FIG. 5.
The two holder portions 18 and 20 being both `tapered from edge to edge together approximate the thickness of an ordinary straight razor -blade and with a blade 30 to be sharpened or used between them, and projecting at one edge only the assembly simultates or resembles an ordinary razor blade to be honed, stropped, or actually used in shaving.
To remove a blade 30 from a scissors holding, it is necessary only to swing the portions 1S and 20 apart on their central pivot 14 to uncover the recess 22 -thereby also disengaging the upper ends of the holder pins 34, and to lift the blade 30 from the pins 34 and the recess 22.
Although a preferred construction has been described thus in detail, it is obvious that other changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A razor blade holder `for a double-edged razor blade having aligned openings along a longitudinal axis, comprising two substantially at elongate members pivotally connected intermediate Itheir ends, each of said members having a handle portion on one end of said pivotal connection and a blade holding part on the other end, said members being aligned in a normal blade holding position;
(a) a rst lblade holding part having a blade-receiving recess formed by two side walls and one back wall, said recess having a graduated depth extending from substantially no depth at the front edge of said blade holding part to a depth of at least the thickness of a razor blade at said back wall,
(b) a second blade holding part having means for engaging and clamping a blade at the no depth edge portion of the rst blade holding part,
(c) means for positioning a blade within said recess so that one blade edge will project beyond the front edges of the blade holding parts and the other blade edge will be prevented from contacting said back wall (d) said holder including means limiting the relative pivotal movement between said members in one direction when the members are aligned, said second blade holding part having surface portions which upon pivotal movement in said one direction, from a position in which the front edge of the second blade holding part is back of said recess to allow a blade to be received within said recess, slides across the walls adjacent said recess holding said Isecond blade holder part safely away from said other blade edge to protect it from being damaged by the front edge of said second blade holder part.
