IJEONARD K. WARNER, OF CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
LADDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,640, dated March 9, 1886.
Application filed January 14, 1886. Serial No. 188,561. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, LEONARD K. WARNER, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of ref-v erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has reference to ladders; and it consists in the improved arrangement for securing independent ladder-sections to each other so as to present a continuous ladder; and the said invention will be hereinafter more particularly described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, Figure l is a perspective view of two ladder-sections secured together. Fig. 2 is atransverse sectional view of the adjacent portions of two ladder-sections, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
A refers to a section of a ladder, upon the rung a of which are pivoted the lower portions of bars B B, which are normally located adjacent and parallel to the side standards, b b, of the said ladder-section. The end portions of the rung a are reduced or cut away, as represented at d, in order to provide for a limited inward oblique play of the said bars B B, as represented byl dotted lines in Fig. 2. Each bar B is provided, adjacent to the ends of the standards I), with a verticallyelongated slot, e, through which passes the topmost rung, ct', of the ladder-section.
As will be observed in the several figures, the bars B B are of such length that their extremities extend up to tle first rung, c, of the next section of the ladder. The said bars B B `are each provided above its slot c with a lug or projection,f, which is held rigidly in place by rivets or washers g g. The lower portion of each of the standards b b of the upper section of the ladder each have a perforation.
h refers to a keybar, which is pivotally hung by straps t' upon the rung a, and the said key-bar, with its reduced portions h h, is of such size as to occupy the transverse space between the bars B B when they are in truevertical position represented by full lines in Figs. 1 and 2.
By reference to Figs. l and 2 it will be observed that the standards b b of the upper ladder-section rest upon the standards b b of the lower section, and that the extremities of the bars B B are recessed so as to engage the lower rung, a, of the upper section, while the pins f of said bars enter the recesses in the standards b b of the upper sections, the parts and connections being rigidly held by the keybar 7i and its extensions, which are turned down to a position illustrated in full lines, so as to have a wedged bearing between the bars B B. Now, when it is desired to remove or detach the sections, the key-bar h, with its extensions, is turned up to a position illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, so that the reduced portions h h will permit the bars B B to be moved to the oblique position represented in dotted lines in said ligure, the elongated slots of said bars passing over the said reduced portions. This inward movement of the bars B B results in withdrawing the pins ff from the perforations in the side bars of the upper section, which can then be removed.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the ladder-connectionhercin described is comparatively simple, cheap, and durable` that the connections of the several ladder-sections being the same may be quickly and promptly effected, and the several sections as readily disconnected when desired.
I claiml. The combination, with two ladder-sections, of two bars pivoted on one of the seetions and provided with projections adjacent to and engaging the other section, and a locking device adapted t0 hold them in an engaged position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a ladder-section, of two bars, B B, each pivoted thereon and provided with an elongated slot, e, and pro jections f of a key-block, h, having reduced portions, and a second section having perfo-V rations to engage said projections, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEONARD K. WARNER.
