Description

UNITED STATES MOSES N. VVARD, O
F OLDTOWN, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,6 16, dated October 29, 1861.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, MosEs N .WVARD, of Oldtown, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-l ipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon- Figure 1 being a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 being a perspective view of the pipe complete.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the pipe with a cooling and condensing cylinder and air-chamber, and conducting the smoke through the same in its passage to the mouth of the smoker.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, is the cylinder. B is theair-ehamber. Ois atube fitted smoketight to the cylinder-heads, and forming a direct passage through the cylinder. D is the pipe-stein, and fits smoke-tight in the tube 0, and passes directly through it. E is the mouthpieee. e a are two ports in the tube G communicating with the cylinder A. t n are two ports in the stem D which correspond with the ports 6 a. b is an air-tight plug fixed in the stem D between the ports i and n. s is a plug which closes the orifice in chamber B kit 0. The chamber B communicates freely wi h the cylinder A by means of the passage 0.
The operation of the pipe is as follows: The smoke flows along the stem D from the bowl until it is obstructed by the plug 1), when it fiows through the ports t and einto the cylinder A and chamber B, which, by their large radiating surface conducting and condensing power, deprive the smoke of a large portion of its heat and impurities. It then returns by the ports a and n to the stem D, and flows to the mouth. It will be seen that the oil and other impurities which rapidly collect in the chamber B cannot return to the stem D under any circu instances, but are easily vented at the orifice c.
Among the advantages of my pipe are the coolness of the smoke, it being freed from the oil of the tobacco and all impurities, while the moisture, which in the common pipe either gathers in the bowl and obstructs the combustion of the tobacco or flows into the mouth, is collected in the chamber B, and the tobacco burns readily when saturated with an amount of moisture which would preclude its being used in the common pipe.
What I claim is The combination of the cylinder A, chamber B, and stem D, the Whole constructed as described, and operating asset forth.
MOSES N. VARD.
