Description

. has,
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. YINGLING, OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
COMPOUND FOR TREATING TOBACCO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,176, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed September 22, 1885. Serial No.177,8.'i1. (No specimens To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. YINGLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tittin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have inventedacertain new and useful Improvement in Compounds for Treating Tobacco, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved compound or composition of matter for treating tobacco for smoking purposes, whether to be employed in a pipe, or for the fillers of cigars, cigarettes, cheroots, or in any other manner for smoking; and it has for its object to counteract the injurious effect of the nicotine upon the system of the smoker, as more fully hereinafter specified.
My improved compound consists of the following ingredients, to wit: gallic acid, tonkabean, and Valerian-root, which may be used in the form of powder, or as an infusion or tincture, and applied to the tobacco in any convenient manner.
In carrying out my invention I take gallic acid and mix with it the tonka-bean and valerian-root, which have been previously reduced to powder. These may be employed in varying proportions; but for general practical purposes I have found the ingredients in the following proportions to answer, viz: gallic acid, twelve parts; tonka-bea-n,six parts; valerian-root,six parts. These, afterbeingintimately mixed, may be sprinkled over and upon the tobacco, or an infusion or decoction of the same may be made and sprayed or sprinkled over the tobacco so as to thoroughly permeate the same, the tobacco being subsequently dried and used as the ordinary tobacco for smoking or filling cigars, cigarettes, cheroots, 8m.
WVhen the tincture or infusion is employed, from two to four drams of the compound is used to two or more pounds of the tobacco, and when the compound is employed in a powdered state from one to two drams of the powder, in bulk, to one or more pounds of tobacco are used, the whole being intimately mixed.
The chemical action of my improved compound in connection with the tobacco during smoking is as follows: The gallic acid neutralizes the alkaloid nicotine of the tobacco, and during the burning of the tobacco thus treated gives out carbonic acid, which neutralizes the ammonia contained in the tobacco, and the tonka-bean and Valerian-root act, one as a flavoring material and the other as a nervine, the latter to correct the effect of the nicotine upon the system which may not be wholly neutralized. Benzoic acid may be added to the compound, if desired, where Very rank tobacco is employed, to further neutralize the ammonia; but the same result may be accomplished as well by an increased percentage of gallic acid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
A compound for treating tobacco, consisting of gallie acid, tonka-bean, and Valerian-root, combined and applied as described, whereby the injurious effects of the nicotine upon the human system are obviated, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. YINGLING.
