Description

y 1967 H. E. PHILLIPS 3,321,103
WASTE DISPOSAL DEVICE Filed April 2'7, 1965 INVENTOR.
HENRY E. PH/LL /PS United States Patent 3,321,103 WASTE DISPOSAL DEVICE Henry E. Phillips, 5415 W. Holsey St., Pine Blulf, Ark. 71601 Filed Apr. 27, 1965, Ser. No. 451,139 Claims. (Cl. 220-63) My invention relates to waste disposal devices.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved light weight, portable waste disposal device employing disposable bags for storing waste.
Another object is to provide a new and improved waste disposal device of the character indicated which prevents any accidental escape of waste stored therein.
Still another object is to provide a new and improved waste disposal device of the character indicated which is pleasing to the eye and which can be manufactured easily and inexpensively.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will now be explained with reference both to this specification and to the drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of my invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof taken along 2-2 in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view of my invention showing a disposable bag filled with waste in process of removal from my invention;
FIG. 4 is a detail view illustrating means to locking and unlocking some of the parts of my invention;
FIG. 5 is a detail view of a clip used in my invention;
FIG. 6 is a detail view of a catch used in my invention; and
FIG. 7 is a perspective view of a tray used in my invention.
The center of lid 12 carries a central hole 26 having a peripherally disposed notch 28. I further provide a truncated hollow cone 30 open at both ends, the lower and smaller end terminating in a hollow cylinder 32 also open at both ends and carrying a finger 34 projecting horizontally outward radially from the periphery of the cylinder. The cone rests upon the top of lid 12 and cylinder 32 projects into chamber 10, being inserted by rotating the cylinder until finger 34 is in registration with notch 28. After the cylinder is in place, it is rotated until notch 28 and finger 34 are out of registration whereby the cone is held in place.
Cylinder 32 adjacent its lower end carries a circular groove 36 disposed about its outer periphery. The mouth of a disposable plastic bag 38 is placed over the bottom end of the cylinder, and a rubber band 40 is placed detachably over the bag and rests in groove 36 to hold the bag in place.
One side edge of the bag is held by a horizontal clip 41, slidably positioned on a vertical rod 42 positioned in the chamber adjacent the bag. The bottom end of the rod rests in the inner surface of the bottom of the chamber; the upper end of the rod extends through a horizontally extending side plate 44 secured at one end to an interior side wall of the chamber. Plate 44 is a tray stop which supports a removable open tray 46 in the chamber. Extra bags, stored flat, are stacked in the tray for use as required.
A circular plate 48 having a top handle 50 is hingedly supported at 51 on the top end of the cone. Diametrically disposed from hinges 52 on the bottom. side of plate 48 is a spring loaded catch 16 which engages a peripheral lip 18 on the top of the cone. Catch 16 has a top notch 22 engaged by a vertical rod 24 projecting upward through a slot 26 in plate 48. Rod 24 rides in slot 26 whereby the catch can be opened to permit plate 48 to be swung open by sliding rod 24 away from lip 18.
In use, the plate is opened to permit waste, particularly dust or powder waste to be inserted in the bag. When the bag is full, the cone and cylinder are lifted out of the chamber and rotated until a narrow neck 50 is formed in the bag with the waste therein disposed therebelow. Clip 41 prevents the bag from rotating with the cone and cylinder. A separate close bag latch member 52 has an orifice 54 which is then engaged with neck 50. The rubber band is then slid down to detach the bag from the cylinder. Lid 12 is then opened to permit the filled bag to be removed and disposed of. Member 52 is saved for reuse. A new bag can be installed thereafter.
It will be apparent that my disposal device as described above provides an eflicient, economical and pleasant way of removing waste without permitting any waste to escape accidentally. All parts can be of molded plastic without loss of form or color and can have a desirable satin finish of any color to match room decor.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A waste disposal device comprising a hollow chamber having a top lid with a first open position and a second closed position, said lid having a central orifice; a truncated cone open at both ends; a hollow cylinder secured to the smaller end of the cone and projecting downward therefrom, said cylinder being open at both ends, said cylinder being adapted for removable insertion in said orifice whereby when the cylinder is inserted in the orifice, the cone rests on top of said lid; and a circular plate secured to the top and larger end of said cone, said plate having a first open position and a second closed position.
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein said o-rifice has a peripheral notch and said cylinder on the outer periphery thereof carries a horizontal finger extending radially outward therefrom, said finger being adapted for movement into and out of registration with said notch.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 further including a disposable bag in said chamber, the mouth of said bag being deta'chably secured to the outer surface of a bottom portion of said cylinder.
4. A device as set forth in claim 3 wherein the said outer surface of the bottom portion of said cylinder carries a circular groove and further including a rubber band extending around said outer surface on the outside of the mouth of the bag and resting in the groove.
5. A device as set forth in claim 4 further including a horizontal clip in said chamber adapted for engagement with a side of the bag and means vertically supporting said clip in said chamber.
No references cited.
