Description

Oct. 11, 1966 R. M. KORST HAIR CUTTING AID Filed March 20, 1964 INVENTOR. IQICHARD M. KORST BY 'J I, M141 J M I 1 $770 M ajlttg s United States Patent "ice 3,277,902 HAIR CUTTRNG AID Richard M. Korst, Hillcrest Shopping Center, Joliet, 111. Filed Mar. 20, 1964, Ser. No. 353,429 1 Claim. (Cl. 132-150) This invention relates to hair cutting accessories, and more particularly to a guide for use by a barber while cutting hair.
Barbers and hair stylists generally use an ordinary straight comb as a guide during the cutting of a persons hair. However, since most mens and womens hair is cut to curve with the configuration of their head, a straight comb must be manipulated back and forth a great many times during the cutting operation thereby needlessly consuming unnecessary time and effort. Similarly, a hair stylist is called upon regularly to cut hair in any one of a variety of styles in fashion at any particular time, especially with regard to womens hair, but there is no comparable variety of hair cutting guides from which to choose.
It is a general object of this invention to provide a new and improved hair cutting guide.
It is another general object of this invention to provide a new and improved hair cutting guide to facilitate and speed up the cutting of hair.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a new and improved tool for use while cutting hair which will insure that the hair cut on opposite sides of the head will always be of uniform curvature.
It is yet another object of this invention to provide a new and improved hair trimming aid adapted to facilitate the cutting and blending of hair into a variety of styles.
It is still a further object to provide a guide to facilitate the cutting of hair comprising a curved comb portion and a handle portion conveniently positioned for use by one person while cutting the hair of another person.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become readily apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the hair cutting guide in use;
FIG. 2 is a view of one side of the hair cutting guide showing the curvature of the comb portion;
FIG. 3 is a view taken generally about the line 33 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 4 is a view taken generally about the line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
While an illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings and will be described in detail herein, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in many different forms, and it should be understood that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated. The scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring now to the drawings in more detail. the invention is shown generally at and serves as a hair cutting guide for a barber. hair stylist or other person while clipping hair as with a clipper 12, as can be seen in FIG. 1, or with some other hair cutting device.
This tool or guide 10 consists generally of a bent or curved comb portion 14 and a handle or shank portion 16 attached to one end 18 of the comb portion as bv a screw 20.
The comb portion 14 consists generally of an elongate 3,277,902 Patented Oct. 11, 1966 backing element 22 having a plurality of parallel and spaced teeth 24 extending perpeendicularly therefrom and formed integrally therewith. Attachment portion 22 is arcuately curved about a point 26 which lies in a plane generally perpendicular to the length of the teeth 24, the radius of curvature 28 being roughly equivalent to the radius of curvature of a human head. The comb portion 14 as shown in the drawings subtends an angle 39 of about 60 about the point 26, however, other angles between 45 and may be also be used. Preferably, the backing element and teeth are integrally molded of plastic in the shape and configuration shown, but it is to be understood that any suitable material is within the contemplation of the invention as well as individually mounted teeth.
Handle portion 16 is generally cylindrical in shape and of a convenient diameter and length, having rounded or bevelled ends 32. The handle 16 is mounted at one end of backing portion 14 extending generally perpendicularly and outwardly from the backing portion with a slight angle 36 from the plane of the angle 30, as can be seen in FIG. 4. It is to be understood that handle 16 may be a separate element and attached to the comb portion as by means 20, or it may be integrally formed with the comb.
In operation, it can be seen in FIG. 1 that the hair cutting guide 10 may be drawn through the hair allowing the end portions which are to be cut to project through the teeth 24. However, because the curvature of the comb portion 14 conforms to the shape of the head, an equal amount of hair projects through all of the slots separating the comb teeth 24, and all of this hair may be out without further movement of the guide 10. It will be understood that a barber or hair stylist who works on opposite sides 38 and 40 of a persons head at diiferent times is able to out both sides of his hair to the same profile curvature without unnecessary movement back and forth or reference to a mirror.
I claim:
A hair cutting guide consisting of a comb having an elongated backing element with a plurality of parallel teeth extending transverse of the backing element, said backing element being curved about a point in a plane generally perpendicular to the teeth and in a radius generally the same as a human head, thereby conforming to the shape of a head, to facilitate the even cutting of the hair when drawn therethrough, said backing element having an angular extent between about 45 to 90 about said point; and an elongate, slender handle extending outwardly from only one end of said backing element and in a direction generally opposite to said point, said handle having a length sufficient to be rotated in the hand of a barber, generally about the handle axis with the guide lying generally along the head during rotation, to facilitate manipulation of the teeth of the guide through the hair.
