Description
UNITED STATES CHARLES BUSHOR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR LOADlNG COAL, dac.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. SQJBSQ), dated July 2, 1861.
.To aZZ whom it may concern.; Be it known that I, CHARLES BUsHoR, of Philadelphia, iny the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved; Machine for Loading or Unloading and Conveying Coal; and I hereby declare that the following is-a full and exact description of the same, reference `being had to `the accompanying drawings, and to the letcentered in the frame G. This conveyer is ters of reference marked thereon.
'Figure I representsan elevation, Fig. II a plan, and Figs. III and IV, end'views, ot' my improved machine. y
Similar letters represen-t similar parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of an elevator with a horizontal and circular conveyor in such a manner that thereby the coal can be .taken from one point and delivered at any other point within the reach of the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame ofthe machine, carrying a shaft a. on its upper end, through Which thev .whole machine is set in motion. This shaft passes th rough the opening of the frame-work of an elevator B, arranged with suitable rollers n m, over which an endless chain provided with buckets C is ni'ade to work, or the buckets may be jointed together, so as to form a chain. This elevator ,receives its motion through the wheel 2, fast on the end of the shaft or, Working into the Wheel 3 on the shaft d, on the upper end of which another Wheel 4 is fastened, Working into the wheel 5', fast on the shaft of the upper roller fm. This Wheel'- 5 Works on a key on the shaft of thefroller m, so as to be thrown in or out-of gearing, as
. may be desired.
Above the shaft ais a shaft f, likewise supported by the frame A. This shaft f is provided with a long sliding piece Working-in suitable guides on the inside of the elevator# frame B, and has on each sdeapinion 6, fasi-, on'the shaft j', Working in suitable racks g,
fast to the framing B.
' On the en d of the shaft f a Wheel Sis fixed,
Working into a pinion 9, attached to the shaft a. The wheel 8 is made to move sidewise on the shaft f, so as to be able to throw the same in or out of gear, as maybe required.-r By means of this gearingworking into the racks g the elevator can be raised or y .loweremas may be desired.
Aprovided With square drums o w--one at each end-#over which the buckets E, jointed t'o each other, pass. The drum fc is connected by means ofchain-wheels and` chains, orbymeans of suitable gearing, with the shaftit, and 0btains in this manner motion, which is com- `nnunicated to the buckets E, as Well as to the drum w at the other end, on account of the squares on the drums-being of the same size v as thev buckets, which, as above mentioned,
being jointed together, form a chain. The motion of the drum w is communicated.
` through the Wheels 13 and 14 to a small shaft t', attached to the side of theframe ot this conveyer, on the bottom of which said shaft a pinion 15 is attached.
On the center of the upright frame G- a Wheel 1o is arranged, turning loosely upon the same.
A conveyer Il is attached to the upperpart of the lupright frame G, resting Withits other end upon a circular railway L. The buckets .N of this conveyor are moved through the pinion 16, gearing into the Wheel 1o.' lThis pinion is fast to a small shaft y, attached to the movable part of the-frame G. On the end of this shaft y a wheel 17 is attached,gear1ng -into a Wheel'lS, fast to the drum of the conveyor H. The buckets N oi this conveyer H are made with hinged bottoms capable, of opening. A plate is arranged underthe buckets, upon which the saine rest, vandwhich keeps the bottoms of the buckets 'closed This plate is so arranged that the same can either be let down or moved-away at anyplace Within the Whole length of this conveyor, by which arrangement the bottoms of thehncltets, when arriving at that place, will fallopen and allow the coal contained in the same to fallout. Below this plate or' support for the bottoms of the buckets-a' board sis arranged "on the inside of the training of the conveyor H, capable of being-turned toward either side coal will. be discharged at the end of the conveyer. f
When a Vessel is to be unloaded, the ele-- Vator B is brought into the hold of the vessel and the coal raisep up bythe saine, which is then discharged through the hopper C upon the conve yerD, from which the coal is brought upon the conveyer H, and can be discharged, as above described, at any desired point withi the range of this conveyer I i.
The frame A, Which supports the elevator and one end of the-conveyer D, may likewise be arranged so as to be capable of moving upon a circular railway having the frame G as a center, by which arrangement this elevator and conveyer can be lnovedin a circle around the yard and the coal taken up at any place in the yard by the elevator B and discharged at any other point by the conveyer H.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l.. The arrangement of an elevator B and conveyer D witil. a circularly-inovin g conveyer H, substantially in the manner and for thc purpose described.
2. The arrangementcf the conveyerH, capable of turning at one end around a center and supporting the other end upon a circular railway, in the `manner and for the purpose described. CHARLES BUSHOR. Vtnesses:
HENRY E. ROEDER,
CHAs. MCCARTHY.
