ADJUSTABLE SHELVING FOR KNOCK-DOWN FURNITURE Original Filed Dec. 6, 1962 FIG. I

INVENTOR 70 PAUL E. FREEMAN ATTORNEY 3,259,079 ADXUSTABLE SHELVING FOR KNOCK-DOWN FURNITURE Paul E. Freeman, Tallahassee, Fla, assignor to Lok Trim Corporation, Tallahassee, Fla, a corporation of Florida @riginal application Dec. 6, 1962, Ser. No. 242,762, now Patent No. 3,195,968, dated July 20, 1965. Divided and this application July 19, 1965, Ser. No. 473,106 3 Claims. (Cl. 198-59) The present application is a division of applicants prior application, Serial No. 242,762, filed December 6, 1962, now Patent No. 3,195,968, granted July 20, 1965.
This invention relates to knock-down furniture and is directed primarily to a construction in which the shelves of the furniture are capable of vertical adjustment.
The main object of the invention is to provide shelf supporting members or brackets which are capable of movement to various positions to support a plurality of shelves at various positions, as in a knock-down bookcase, or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide shelf supporting members which are readily adjustable and guided in vertical channel members to vary the position of the shelves which are supported by said brackets.
A further object of the invention is to provide channeled corner members provided with an internal filler member, the tiller member completes a closed leg structure or corner member which lends to neat appearance and strength in the finished product, such as a bookcase or the like.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be appreciated and will become apparent when considered in connection with the accompanying description and drawings, in which like numerals indicate similar parts throughout the various views.
FIG. 1 is a prospective view of a unit embodying a plurality of vertically adjusting shelves;
FIG. 2 is a partial prospective view of one of the edge members illustrating the filler and the shelf supporting clamp or bracket;
FIG. 3 is a section on the line 33 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a prospective view of one of the adjustable shelf supporting members or'bracket.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, in which like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the various views, a knock-down shelf unit is generally indicated at A and discloses a knock-down shelf unit, embodying particular adjustable shelf supporting members, whereby a plurality of shelves may be adjustably mounted within the respective corner frame members.
Thus, the shelved structure of FIG. 1 comprises mainly a plurality of corner angle members 31, the angle irons including inturned flanges 30. In this construction the filler member 36 is provided with the substantially U-shaped portion 37 and includes angularly disposed side members 39 and 40. The substantially U-shaped member provides a space 38. The adjustable shelf structure shown in FIG. 1 includes a lower bottom shelf 65 and intermediate shelves 66, 67 and 68, the latter of which is shown in phantom. Further, the structure includes a top panel 69, but it is, of course, understood that this panel can be omitted, in which event, the upper ends of the channel members 31 are capped as by the use of a foot member 48, which in the disclosed construction the foot member, as will be understood, is used in the nature of a cap rather than a foot; and, of course, it is contemplated that the cap may be securely fastened to the channel 31 in the same manner in which the foot member 48 is fastened to the channel member 31 in any known manner.
United States Patent 1 3,259,679 Patented July 5, 1966 As described, the channel member 31 is provided with the filler 36 and each of the fillers 36 is provided with a web member 70, which is capable of vertical sliding movement within the recess 38 provided in the filler 36. The inner end of the web member 70 is somewhat enlarged as at 71 to engage the U-shaped opening 37, the forward edge of the filler 70 terminating in a right angular portion 72, which in effect provides a closure for the opening which would normally appear in the leg structure. The lower portion of the disclosed construction, as will be seen, is provided with short side walls 73 and 74 which are adapted to seat upon the upper edge surface of the lower panel 65.
In the assembly of the present disclosed construction it is, of course, necessary to cut member 70 to length, that is, wherever it is desired to insert a shelf it is necessary that the members 70 be cut olf at the desired level. Each of the vertical corner elements 31 and its associated filler members are capable of receiving a plurality of stops or shelf supporting members 75, said members being provided with an integral central element having an enlarged inner member 76, which inner member is substantially the same size as the recess 37, and the shelf supporting element 75 is further provided with angularly disposed side members 77 which are capable of tight fitting engagement with the angled surfaces of the tiller element 36. Further, the shelf supporting brackets 75 are provided with centrally threaded recesses to receive a threaded set screw member 78, which is capable of hand manipulation so that the rear end 79 of the threaded element is capable of movement into engagement with the inner surface of the recess 37 whereby to lock the bracket in the desired vertical position to support a shelf. It will be seen that the shelf supporting bracket 75 is supported on its underside as by the web 76), and consequently when one of the brackets 75 is moved into position to engage the upper surfaces of the web 70 and the filler 36, the bracket 75 cannot be downwardly moved any further. This being accomplished and it is desired to put a shelf at a next upper position, it is only necessary to out another member 70 of the height desired for shelf support, whereupon a bracket 75 can be vertically moved within the recess 38 to engage the upper portion of the web 70, and thereafter locked in position as by the screw 78. Of course, this is necessary with each corner member, and consequently, it will readily be seen that a plurality of shelves are capable of being inserted at various elevations along the vertical portions of the corner members 31.
Therefore, in the invention disclosed and described herein a knock-down cabinet can be readily erected and including a plurality of vertically disposed shelves and they can be, if desired, provided with side panels similar to the panels 73 and 74.
From a consideration of the above disclosed construction it will be readily recognized that the invention is simple, can be erected in a very short time without the use of any special tools, the shelves can be adjusted at will in a convenient manner.
It is intended that the disclosed construction is only a preferred form of the invention, which is capable of modification and variation within the scope of the following claims. a
I claim:
1. A knock-down furniture shelving construction comprising in combination, a bottom panel, and a plurality of vertically adjustable shelves, vertically disposed corner members consisting of right angularly disposed channel shaped members, said channel members including angularly disposed flanges extending inwardly from their opposite sides, a substantially U-shaped filler member disposed between said flanges providing a vertical way and having sides angularly disposed from said way at each side, a web member disposed in said way, and shelf supporting brackets having an integral stud provided With an enlarged head, and having angular side members extending from the stud, said stud guidingly fitted within the way and the side members engaging the sides of the filler member, and a locking member extending through the stud and engaged with the rear surface of the way to lock the brackets in vertically adjusted position.
2. The structure according to claim 1, and a web member fitting Within the way and disposed to engage the bottom side of the bracket.
3. The structure according to claim 1, said bracket having a threaded opening extending horizontally through the same, and a screw mounted within the threaded opening and projecting past the opening at the rear side of the bracket to engage the surface of the way and lock the bracket in adjusted position.
