WILSON B. SOLLIDAY, OF SOUTH EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOOK-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,602, dated August 18, v18H5.
Application filed February 6, 1F84. (Model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILsoN B. SOLLIDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BookRests; which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book rest embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a book-rest having a vertically-adjustable shelf, which is provided with locking pins or teeth, which are diagonally arranged so as to interlock with the standard of the rest'at different places and thus securely retain the shelf in its adjusted position, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and definitely claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the base of the rest, and B a standard rising therefrom. G represents a shelf or ledge, which is formed with an opening, a, through which the standard passes, whereby said shelf may be raised and lowered or vertically adjusted onV the standard. One side of the standard is toothed or corrugated, forming a rack, E, and the opposite side has a number of openings, E', so that the standard may bel said to be a double rack-bar. On the wall of the opening a is a transversely-extending tooth, D, and oppositethereto a tooth or pin, F, the tooth D being adapted to engage with the rack E and the pin F with the openings E', it being noticed that the tooth D is at the upper part of said'opening a and the pin F at the lower portion thereof, or said tooth and pin are diagonally arranged in said opening and their points project toward each other.
It will be seen that when the shelf C is to be raised or lowered relatively to the height of a book to be rested thereon it is rst raised and turns on the tooth of the rack E with which the tooth D is in contact, said tooth D position of the shelf is attained, the shelf is lowered, the tooth D then dropping in the proper tooth of the rack E, and the pin F entering the proper opening E,and thns, owing to the engagement of the upper and lower ends of the wall of the opening of the shelf with opposite sides of the standard, the shelf is tightly and positively held on the standard, it being noticed that the weight of the book on the shelf causes said tooth and pin to press firmly against the standard, so that the opposite sides of the Wall of the slot or opening a are simultaneouslyinterlocked with the standard, the weightv of the book serving to increase the looking action, and thus the shelf is positively prevented from slipping or shifting downward.
I am aware that it is old to form a support for a bracket so that the bracket may slide thereon by reason of an aperture cut in the said bracket, and also that it is old to secure the bracket by means of pins attached thereto resting in holes in the support, and such I do not broadly claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A book-rest consisting of asupporting-base, A, provided with a standard, B, having a rack on one side and openings on the opposite side thereof, and an adjustable shelf,l G, having an opening, a, the walls of thelsaid opening having teeth D and F,diagonally arranged on two of the opposite sides thereof, said parts being combined, arranged, and operated substantially as described.
