Description
Feb. 8, 1966 H. A. VAN LIESHOUT ETAL 3,234,318
ELECTRIC SHIELD FOR A VERY HIGH-FREQUENCY CHANNEL SELECTOR Filed Oct. 7, 1963 INVENTORS HENRICUS A.VAN LIESHOUT. ANTOON EJ. M. HOEVENAARS.
BY wk 0% AGENT United States Patent 3,234,318 ELECTRIC SHIELD FOR A VERY HIGH- FREQUENCY CHANNEL SELECTOR Henricus Adrianns van Lieshout and Antoon Frits Jozef Marie Hoevenaars, both of Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Netherlands, assignors to North American Philips Company, Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of Delaware Filed Oct. 7, 1963, Ser. No. 314,207 Claims priority, application Netherlands, Oct. 12, 1962, 284,312 4 Claims. (Cl. 174--35) The invention relates to a metal housing for a very high frequency channel selector, said housing comprising a detachable lid, which holds a. thin metal layer or metal foil against the rim of the housing so that it is electrically sealed or shielded.
In a known embodiment a metal lid and a shielding metal layer or foil have inserted between them an elastic intermediate layer, for example, of foam plastic. The lid is secured to the housing by means of screws. This invention has for its object to provide an electric shield for very high frequencies in which no screws are required, and which can be manufactured less expensively in large numbers.
In accordance with the invention this is achieved in that the lid is made of a rubber-like, elastic material, for example, a suitable plastic and is provided with a rim clamping around the rim of the housing, while the edge of the metal shielding layer or foil, bent over at least once at right angles, is clamped tight between the two first-mentioned rims.
The invention will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a presently preferred embodiment in a cross sectional view.
The figure shows in a sectional view the throughshaped metal housing 1 of a very high frequency channel selector, divided by partitions 3 in a conventional manner into a number of compartments. The parts of the channel selector arranged in the housing 1 are not shown for the sake of clarity. The housing 1 has a rim or flange 5, bent approximately at right angles and extending outwardly. A lid 7 of a rubber-like, elastic material, for example a suitable synthetic substance, such as polyethylene, having a rim 9 clamping around the rim of the housing 1. In the embodiment shown, the rim 9 of the lid 7 has two bends approximately at right angles. The rim 9, as will be seen from the figure, extends beneath the rim 5 and housing 1, and is fastened to the housing 1 without the need for further means.
Owing to the elasticity of the material of the lid, the
latter can always be lifted from the housing 1 and be rearranged thereon.
On the inner side of the lid 7 a metal foil, for example, a copper foil .11, which is urged against the rim 5 of the housing 1 by the lid 7 is provided to form an electric shield. To this end the edge of the foil 11, is bent, like the rim 9 of the lid 7, around the rim 5 of the housing 1 and the foil 11 is clamped tight between the rim 9, and the rim 5 of the housing 1.
The inner side of the lid 7 may also be provided with elevated ribs or ridges 15 which shields one compartment from another and improves the contact between the foil .and the partitions 3. Also the lid 7 has a similar rib 17 along the rim 5 of the housing 1.
Instead of a separate metal foil 11, a conductive metal layer may be applied to the inner side of the lid 7.
We claim:
1. An electric shield for a very high frequency channel selector housing comprising a partitioned housing member having an outwardly extending rim surrounding the open end of said housing member, a lid of elastic material having a marginal skirt portion defining an inwardly opening channel receiving the rim of said housing and an electric shielding rfoil overlying the open end of said housing and clamped in place between said housing rim and the marginal portion of said lid.
2. An electric shield for a very high frequency channel selector housing comprising a partitioned housing member having an outwardly extending rim portion surrounding the open end of said housing member, an electric shielding foil overlying the open end of said housing and bent around and under said rim, a lid member of elastic material having a marginal U-shaped skirt portion, defining an inwardly opening channel receiving said housing rim and associated shielding foil, said lid member clamping said foil in electric shielding relation With said housing member.
3. An electric shield according to claim 2 wherein said shielding foil is secured directly to the inside of said lid member.
*4. An electric shield according to claim 2 wherein said lid member has projecting rib means for engaging the inner surface of the side walls of said housing member and a pair of projecting rib means defining a channel for receiving the partitions of said housing member.
