GEO. N. SEIDLER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT,
a PLACE.
ASSIGNOR TO RAVISON READ, OF SAME PORTABLE FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,936, dated April 2, 1861.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, GEORGE Y. SEIDLER, of the city and county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Portable Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare t-h at the same is described and represented in the following specification and drawings, and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which otl the figures.
The nature of this improvement consists in constructing and V arranging adjustable supports so as to produce a curve, or inclination of one portion of the bed, as desired, and at the same time, render it more irm and secure when in use, the object of which improvement is to produce a folding bed, compact `tor storage or transportation, having a firm and secure adjusting arrangement, simple and eiiicient in its operation.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l, shows the bed folded compactly together t'or laying away, or for transportation. Fig. 2. shows the bed and its frame in an incline, or elevated posit-ion. Fig. 3, shows a sectional view of the whole arrangement.
a, is the frame work, made in box form, and hinged together at e.
b, are the slats or cross bars which sustain the springs c, or bed. These bars 7) may be more or less in number and secured, or let into the sides of the trame work at a line higher up, if desirable.
In one portion of the frame A, is an adjustable frame hinged at g, which also has slats 7), to support the bed, or springs c.
fi are` supports, one of which is hinged to i the frame j, at 1f. The said frame is elevated or depressed by moving the foot., oilower end ot' the supports /L from one notch to another, in the rack m, which is secured to the side of the frame work a. The second support h", is hinged to the l trame work a, at n, and by the use of which l i the part of the frame A is adjusted to its i proper height, and held firmly .in that position simply by changing the foot of the support t, from one notch to another in the rack 0, which is also hinged on, and folds into, the part A, when it is closed up.
The cord i, is passed through holes in the end of the frames a and f, and its ends se cured to the supports at t, and u. The support /L is `folded up to its place in the frame 1V, b v pulling the cord r at s, and the suppo-rt 7L is also brought to its place in the frame f, by pulling the cord c at o. The rack o also folds over into the underside of the part A.
is a part of any suitable material secured` onto the upper side otl the slauts b,
and between the bearing portion of the springs c and the slats b, the object ot which is to prevent the creak of the springs, as will be experienced when they (the springs) are secured directly upon the slats without any intermediate material.
Thus it will be seen that by closing up the parts into their respective places as described and hooking, or otherwise securing the two parts together in a proper manner, the whole is made very compact, and always in complete readiness for use, thus securing the advantage of the two bends, or curves in l the bed (see g, 6,) more or less as desirable and also providing a firm support when elevated at the desired point, from the fact that each support is hinged at the opposite end of the frame, from that of the hinges.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, object, and the advantage derived from this improvement, so as to enable a person skilled to make the same, i
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
The combination of the box or frame work a, and j', racks m, and o, supports h, i, having the padded springs a, c, arranged substantially in' the manner and for the purpose described.
GEORGE N. SEIDLIGR.
