(Cl. 206-79) This invention relates to a necktie display card, and more particularly to a display card for use by a salesman in displaying to a haberdasher or to a department store buyer samples of ties and of fabrics from which ties may be made.

Heretofore it has been the practice of necktie salesmen to carry with them samples of the types of ties they wish to sell, and separate cards having thereon swatches or samples of cloth fabrics from which similar ties may be made. The salesman sets the swatch or sample card before the prospective buyer, and then holds in his hands samples of ties made from corresponding fabrics or in corresponding design, and makes his sales pitch. He repeats this for each style of tie he has to sell. With this way of handling things the salesman is somewhat handicapped because the prospective purchaser has to turn his eyes from the salesman and the ties, which the salesman is holding, to the swatch or sample card sitting on the counter, and back, and because the salesman has to direct attention first to one and then to the other. Moreover, as the salesman tries to sell his whole line of ties, he has to shift sample cards and display matching ties, and he may even have to fumble around in his brief case for the proper sample card to match a particular tie. In any event the shifting of ties and cards is time-consuming and often it is hard to hold the prospective purchasers attention until the whole line is shown. Furthermore, during the course of his travels the salesman may misplace or lose a card bearing the fabric samples, or a corresponding tie, and then his line is incomplete.

An object of this invention is to provide an improved salesmans display card for selling lines of neckties.

Another object of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive display card for expediting the comparison of sample neckties with corresponding samples of fabrics or designs from which similar ties may be made.

Another object of the invention is toprovide a salesmans display card for neckties which will make it possible for a salesman to display his line more easily and more quickly than has heretofore been possible.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a salesmans display card for neckties which will always keep sample ties in proper association with swatches of corresponding fabric and/ or design.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved salesmans display card for neckties which will hold both neckties and swatches of corresponding fabric and/or design for display.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and from the recital of the appended claims, particularly when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing.

FIG. 1 is a developed view of a cardboard blank used for making a display card in accordance with one embodiment of this invention;

FIG. 2 is a side elevation of this blank on a reduced scale, and partially folded, and illustrating by broken lines part of a group of ties positioned to be secured in the card upon the final folding of the blank;

FIG. 3 is a side elevation on the same scale as FIG. 1 of the completed folded display card, and showing in broken lines how ties are secured thereon; and

FIG. 4 is an enlarged, fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of FIG. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows, the ties being omitted.

Referring now to the drawing by numerals of reference, 11 designates a cardboard blank having a medial longitudinally extending score or fold line 13, along which the blank may be folded into two

equal panel sections

14 and 15. Panel section 15 has therethrough a plurality (six in the embodiment illustrated) of longitudinallyspaced rectangular apertures 16, which are arranged in a column.

Secured to the upper edge of the panel section 14, is a further, substantially smaller, rectangular panel or tab 17. Panel 17 is separated along its lower edge from the upper edge of the panel section 15 by a slit 18. It is provided with two laterally-spaced fold or

score lines

20 and 21 which extend parallel to its lateral side edges and divide it into three approximately

equal parts

24, 25 and 26. In its center the panel 17 has an elongate, rectangular aperture 19 the longitudinal side edges of which extend in a direction normal to the

20, 21. The panel 17 also has two spaced, parallel score or fold lines 22, which extend parallel to the longitudinal side edges of the aperture 19, and which permit panel 17 to be folded about its longitudinal center line. The panel 17 also has therethrough four circular holes 32, two of which are located on each

20, 21.

To transform the blank 11 into a display card a plurality of rectangular samples or swatches S of fabric, each of which is slightly larger in area than the area of a respective aperture 16 in panel section 15, are positioned over the apertures 15 and secured around their marginal edges to the rear face of panel section 15. Thereafter panel section 14 is folded along the line 13 and secured against the rear face of panel section 15 so that the several samples S of fabric are securely held between the

14 and 15 to be viewable through the apertures 16 in the display card as shown in FIG. 2.

A plurality of ties T corresponding in fabric and/or design to the swatches in the apertures 16, are positioned face-down beneath panel section 14 and panel section 24, with the approximate mid-points of the ties, lengthwise, abreast of the space 19, and with the larger ends of the ties T extending upwardly beyond the display card as indicated in broken lines in FIG. 2. Section 25 of panel 17 is then folded on fold line 20 behind (beneath) the ties; and section 26 is then folded about the fold line 21 so that it lies on top of section 24. The ties and the panel 17 are then folded as a unit about the score lines 22, so that the smaller ends of the ties remain at the rear of panel section 14, enclosed by the folded lower part 17' (FIG. 1) of the panel 17, and so that the larger or front ends of the ties, together with the upper part 17" of the panel 17, are folded downwardly over the front of the panel section 14. The larger ends of the ties (FIG. 3) then cover the swatches S.

34 and 35 of the panel, which lie between the fold lines 22, to project upwardly through the opening 19 in the blank, with the portion 35 overlying the portion 34 as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. Approximately medially of their ends the ties pass over the folded portion 35 of the panel, and extend downwardly on opposite sides thereof beneath the

24 and 25 of the panel 17, which form loops (FIG. 4) at the front and rear, respectively, of the card. The ties are omitted in FIG. 4 for clarity of illustration.

If desired, advertising matter may be printed on the front and rear faces of the folded sections 25 of the panel.

Surrounding the elongate, folded panel portion 14 of the card, and the narrower portions of the ties, is a flexible loop or strap 36, which serves to retain the narrower or back portions of the ties fiat against panel section The strap 36 may be made to'slide longitudinally of the panel sections 14 andlS, or, alternatively, it may be secured to the panel section 14; a

For supporting the card, a hook 40 (broken lines in FIG. 3) may be provided. This hook is bent to have a straight arm portion 37 and an integral hook portion 33. The arm 37 is adapted to be inserted between the superposed panel folds 26; arid the hook portion 38 is adapted to extend beyond the upper-end of the card to be grasped by the salesman to suspend the ties for viewing. 34 and 35, may be secured together to hold the arm 37 of the hook 40 therebetween by means of a rubberband or the like, which may he passed around the folds to seat in thenotches 32 which are oppositely disposed when the panel 17 is folded as described.

Applicants novel display card provides'a salesman'with a single selling'prop, which contains both sample ties and sampfesof the fabrics from which similar ties may be made. The salesman can hold the ties with one hand by the book 40 or by grasping them at the folded panel 17; and with his other hand the salesman can spread the larger ends of the tie out to display them and to display the swatcheswhich are carried by panel section '15. With the ties mounted on the display card as illustrated in FIG. 3, there is no chance that the salesman will misplace or otherwise lose the sample swatchesof fabric during or followingthe display of his product to a prospective buyer. Moreover, with the ties and swatches mounted on the same display card, it is far easier for the salesman to make rapid comparisons of the ties and corresponding swatche for the benefit of the prospective purchaser. While the instantinvention has been described in conjunction with the display of mens ties, it is: to'be' understood that. it may be employed to display any type of elongated, foldable article-,tog'ether with samples of the 7 materials from which the articles are made. Although it is preferred that the card be made offcardboard; other foldable materials may be employed in making the blank. 11. Also, instead of using two integral. panel sections'14=' and 15 connected along a fold line.13 the card may be made by securing together two separatesections similar to the

14 and 15.

While the invention has been described in connection with a specific embodiment thereof, it will-be understood that it is capable of further modification, and this applica- 7 tion is intended to cover any variations, uses; or adaptations of the invention following, in general, theprinciples of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practice in the art to which the invention pertainsand as may be applied to the essential. features hereinbefore set forth, and as fall within the scope. of the-invention or the limits of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: 1. A display card for neckties and. like elongate," foldable articles, comprising v (a) a first, elongate panel having a display-portion in which there is a plurality of longitudinally-spaced apertures, and a backing portion disposed behind said display portion,

(b) a plurality of swatches secured on said backing portion in registry with said apertures to be viewable through said apertures,

(c) a second panel integral at one endv thereof with one end of said first panel,

(d) said second panel being smaller than said first panel, and being foldable about atleast'one fold line,

' d which extends in the direction of the length of said first panel, enclosing between the overlapping folded portions thereof-the midsection of the article,

(a) said second panel beingfoldable intermediate its ends about a further fold line, which extends normal to the first-named foldline, thereby to fold opposite ends of the enclosed article downwardly over opposite faces of said first panel, and a (f) oneof said overlapping portions of said second panel having therethrough an opening adapted to register with the fold formed inthe other of said overlapping portions, when said second panel is folded about said further fold line. 2. A foldable blank for'making a display card forneckties and the like, comprising H (a) a first panel'having two elongate, rectangular sections separated by a fold line extending longitudinally medially of the longitudinal side edges of said first panel, one of said sections lying at one side of said line and having therein a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings, a (b) a second panel, smaller than said first panel, and

attached at one'edge thereof to one edge of one ofsaid two sections, I ('c) said second panel having at equi-spaced points intermediateits ends a firstpair of spaced fold lines,

which extend in the same direction as the first-named fold line, and having intermediate: its sides at least one further fold line which extends normal to the direction of said first pair of 'fold lines, and having therethrough a centralopening,

(d) said first panel having a length slightly less than half the length of a conventional tie,;and

' (e) said second panel having awidth, measured in the direction of said further fold line, slightly greater thanthree times'the' width of the center section of a conventional; tie. I i

3. A display-card for neckties comprising (a) an elongate first panel having a plurality of longitudinally spacedopeningstherein, l

(b) means for securing, swatches, of material behin said openings for display therethrough, and,

(c) a second panel attached to said first panel atone end thereof and comprising at least two sections foldable on one another about a fold line which extends in the direction of -the length'of said. first panel and encompassing a necktie intermediate its ends,

1 (d) said second panel being'further foldable upon itself about afurther fold line which extends transversely of the first-named fold line whereby to hold the necktie on said one end of said first panel with one end of said necktie falling in front of said first panel and with its other end falling behind said first panel.

Claims

3. A DISPLAY CARD FOR NECKTIES COMPRISING (A) AN ELONGATE FIRST PANEL HAVING A PLURALITY OF LONGITUDINALLY SPACED OPENINGS THEREIN, (B) MEANS FOR SECURING SWATCHES OF MATERIAL BEHIND SAID OPENINGS FOR DISPLAY THERETHROUGH, AND (C) A SECOND PANEL ATTACHED TO SAID FIRST PANEL AT ONE END THEREOF AND COMPRISING AT LEAST TWO SECTIONS FOLDABLE ON ONE ANOTHER ABOUT A FOLD LINE WHICH EXTENDS IN THE DIRECTION OF THE LENGTH OF SAID FIRST PANEL AND ENCOMPASSING A NECKTIE INTERMEDIATE ITS ENDS, (D) SAID SECOND PANEL BEING FURTHER FOLDABLE UPON ITSELF ABOUT A FURTHER FOLD LINE WHICH EXTENDS TRANSVERSELY OF THE FIRST-NAMED FOLD LINE WHEREBY TO HOLD THE NECKTIE ON SAID ONE END OF SAID FIRST PANEL WITH ONE END OF SAID NECKIE FALLING IN FRONT OF SAID FIRST PANEL AND WITH ITS OTHER END FALLING BEHIND SAID FIRST PANEL.
