An object of this invention is to provide a highly improved combination garment of the character described, in which the trouser leg protectors are suspended from the coat, at the insides thereof, both in position of use and when not in use, the construction being such that the protectors may be suspended in wholly raised and up folded flat condition when not in use, and at least partially covered or concealed by means aiding in holding said protectors in flat folded and upraised condition.

Another object of this invention is to provide combination coat and leg protectors of the character described in which the coat and leg protectors are made of the same sheet material and of the same color, so that the leg protectors and the coat form an aesthetic whole and the leg protectors function to camouflage the pants legs of the wearer.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide in a combination garment of the character described, sleeve-like leg protectors having front and rear creases and means to maintain the leg protectors flat when concealed within the coat and not in use, and also to keep the creases sharp and neat.

Still another object of this invention is to provide in a garment of the character described, wraparound pants leg protectors provided with slider-actuated fasteners at split edges at the insides of the leg protectors, the construction being such that to open up each leg protector, the slider is moved upwardly and permits full disconnection of the attached split edges of the leg protector, so that the leg protector may be opened up fully, and to facilitate wrapping the same around the pants leg of the wearer, and whereby the slider may first connect the upper ends of the split edges (which are easier to reach without excessive bending of the body), and then moved downwardly to close the leg protector into a sleeve.

In accordance with the present invention, the leg protectors may be attached in vertically adjusted positions to the inside of the coat at their upper ends, and the lower ends may be folded upwardly and outwardly to lie between said upper ends and the coat, and the uplifted lower ends may be detachably attached to the upper ends of .structure of the character described in which the leg protectors, when not in use may be held in folded condition with the lower ends of the leg protectors out of contact with respect to the wearers suit. It is the lower ends of the leg protectors which are most likely to get wet or spattered, and the present invention provides means to prevent contact of such lower ends with the clothing inside of the coat, to keep such inner clothing clean. The concealment of the lower portions of the leg protectors may be by other portions of the leg protector or by an "ice inner lining of the coat which additionally holds the folded protector in flat condition.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide in a garment of the character described, leg protectors which when used, are suspended from the arm holes of the coat, and which may be retained in uplifted condition, folded about horizontal folds, to prevent distortion or bunching of the folded leg protectors.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a combination garment of the character described in which the leg protectors are suspended by elastic straps, to facilitate arm movement without raising the leg protectors, means being provided to materially shorten said straps, and means being further provided to attach the protectors to the straps in vertically adjusted positions.

Another object of this invention is to provide strong and durable combination coat and leg protectors embodying the invention, which are relatively inexpensive to manufacture, neat, compact and easy to carry when the leg protectors are not in use, easy to manipulate, comfortable to the wearer, and which will be practical and efficient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.

Certain features shown and described herein are shown and described in my copending application Ser. No. 164,264, filed Ian. 4, 1962, for Combination Coat and Pants Leg Protectors, now abandoned.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a combination coat and pants leg protector garment embodying the invention and comprising generally a coat 11 and a pair of pants leg protectors 12. The coat 11 may be a rain coat or top coat or overcoat, being provided with sleeves 13 having arm holes 14. The coat may be provided with an inner lining 15 having a lower edge 16 spaced above the lower edge 17 of the coat. The leg protectors may be made of the same color or fabric as the coat to harmonize therewith.

Each leg protector 12 comprises a sleeve or tube which may encircle a pants leg. The same has an inner wall 20 and an outer wall 21. It is made of two

22, 23 of synthetic plastic sheeting or of waterproof or water repelling fabric. Sheet 22 has an inner wall 24 from which extends an outer wall 25 connected thereto by a fold line 26. Walls 24, 25 are stitched together by a line of stitching 27 adjacent fold line 26. Sheet 23 comprises an inner wall 29 connected about a fold line 38 to a wall 31. Walls 29, 31 are stitched together by line of stitching 32 alongside fold line 30. Walls 25, 31 are stitched together as at 33. The vertical end edges of

24, 29 carry slider actuated fasteners 34 which are closed by a slider 35 which engages separators 36 at the upper ends of the fasteners 34 and the slider is moved down to lock the fasteners. When the slider is moved up to open the fasteners, said slider disengages from one separator so that the leg protector may be opened up flat and wrapped around a pants leg. The slider can then be re-engaged and slid down to close up the protector. The protector may be somewhat tapered converging downwardly. The inner and outer walls can be flat against each other when the protector is not in use.

24, 29 may have downwardly converging edges 24a, 29a to provide for a triangular space at the top to reduce bulk, as will be more fully explained hereinafter.

To further aid in keeping the protectors fiat, when not in use, the lower end of walls 21 of each may be folded inwardly and upwardly and stitched by line of stitching 40 to form a sleeve 41 receiving an elongated, flat flexible or resilient strip stiffener 42. Also at the top of wall 21, a cross sleeve 43 is formed to receive a flat, flexible or resilient stiffener 44. The

Means is provided for suspending said leg protectors from said coat. To this end there is stitched to the center of the inner side of wall 21 of each leg protector, at the upper end of the latter, along lines of stitching 46, a tape, strip or ribbon 47, which may be elastic, and extends upwardly above the upper end of the protector. The upper end of strip 47 may be attached to the lower portion 48 of a loop 49 forming part of a friction buckle or clamp 50. The upper portion 51 of the loop 49 carries a rotary clamp or gripper member 52, the function of which will be described hereinafter.

Stitched to the inside of the coat at the lower end of each arm hole 14, and by line of stitching 53, is a short strip 54 carrying at its lower end, a loop 55 comprising upper and lower pontions 55a, 55b connected by end portions 55c. Strip 54 is attached to the upper loop portion 55a.

An elongated elastic strap or tape or ribbon 56 passes through the loop 55. Stitched to a portion of strap 56 is a loop 57 forming a sleeve 58 through which extends a stop bar 59 having enlarged end heads 59a to prevent the bar from slipping out. The heads 59a may contact the side portions 550 of loop 55 to limit movement of the strap 56 in one direction. Beyond sleeve 58 is a strap end 56a at the inside of the coat. Strap 56 passes downwardly and through loop 49 and may be gripped in adjusted position by the rotating gripper 52. The clamp 50 is of well known construction. In fact, any adjustable buckle may be used. The lower end 56b of strap 56 hangs below the upper end of the leg protector against the inner side of wall 21. A guide loop 60 is stitched by parallel vertical lines of stitching 61 to the inner side of wall 21. Strap end 56b passes through guide loop 60.

A male snap fastener 62 is attached to the inside of the hanging strap end 560.

A female snap fastener 63 is attached to loop 60. The leg protectors 12 may be wholly raised by pulling down on strap ends 56a and snapping snap fasteners 62 to snap fasteners 63.

A male snap fastener 64 is attached to the side of wall 21 facing the lining, at its upper end. Another snap fastener 65 (female) is attached to the lower end of each leg protector. Each leg protector may be folded back and snap fastener 65 snapped to snap fastener 64. The fold of the lower ends of the leg protectors brings said lower ends between the coat and the upper ends of the leg protectors. Snap fastener 65 cannot snap to snap 63, hence preventing erroneous folding of the leg protector.

It will be noted that the lower ends of the leg protectors, which are most likely to be gotten wet or spattered are folded up between the upper part of the leg protector and the coat, and hence will not contact the suit or other clothing of the wearer under the coat. The leg protectors are hence not only folded, but they are pulled up wholly, and furthermore, a vertical adjustment for height of the wearer and for length of coat is provided by buckle 56. When the leg protectors are not in use, they are folded neat and flat and are partially hidden. They are fiat and will not cause a bulge. The triangular cut out provided by inclined edges 24a, 29a, give room for the loop 60, snap 63 and the strap connections thereto, without bulge or bunch. The

42, 44 also serve to hold the leg protectors flat when said protectors are not in use. If desired, either one or the other of the stiffeners may be omitted.

The inner lining of the coat is formed with pockets 70 having receiving openings or slots 71. The openings 71 are offset from the arm holes 14 toward the front edges 72 of the coat and the sides of the pockets are stitched by side seams 73. The upfolded and raised leg protectors may be fitted into the pockets 79 so as to be hidden from view.

Olfsetting the pockets permits the folded protectors to be flat against the back of the coat so that the coat may be hung on a hanger without bulge at the sides.

When the

62, 63 are unsnapped, the pants leg protector will drop by gravity to fully suspended position.

64, 65 are unsnapped to allow the protectors to unfold and allow the uplifted lower ends of the leg protectors to drop down.

In FIGS. 4-6 there is shown a combination garmet 10a embodying a modified construction and comprising a coat 11a and a pair of similar, symmetrically disposed leg protectors 12a.

Leg protectors 12a are similar to leg protectors 12 except that loops 60, snaps 63, 64, 65 and straps 47 are omitted.

The coat 11a is similar to coat 11 except that coat 11a has an upper lining 15a and a lower lining 15b spaced from the upper lining. Upper lining 15a has a lower edge 16a and lower lining 15b has an upper edge 16b. Linings 15a, 15b may be stitched to the middle of the coat by

15c, 15d. A third lining 75 may be stitched to the coat between linings 15a, 15b which overlap said third lining.

Means is provided to suspend the leg protectors 12a from the coat. To this end, there is stitched to the coat at the lower end of each armhole, as at 80, a strip or piece of tape 81, preferably non-elastic, and located between the coat and the inner upper lining 15a. Stitched to the lower end of strip 81 as at 83, is an elastic tape 84 to which is attached an upper male snap fastener 85 and a lower female snap fastener 86. The lower end of said elastic tape 84 carries a strap buckle 87. Adjustable connected to the strap buckle 87 is the upper end of a piece of tape 88, carrying at its lower end a male snap fastener 89. Stitched to the lower end of tape 88, below snap fastener 89, as by line of stitching 90, is a non-elastic tape 91 stitched at its lower end, as at 92, to the upper end of the outer wall of the leg protector.

At the lower end of said outer wall of the leg protector, at its inner surface, is a female snap fastener 94. The inner wall of said leg protector, at its lower end, is

centrally notched, as at 97 to expose said snap fastener S94.

Strap 88 may have a plurality of openings to selectively engage with the tongue of the buckle 87 for adjusting the length of the suspension means. The length of said

84, 88, 91 may be considerably shortened by snapping male fastener 89 to female fastener 86. The female fastener 94 may then be fastened to male snap fastener 85, to hold the leg protector in upfolded position, as shown in FIG. 6.

Snap fastener 94 may also be snapped to fastener 85.

However, male snap fastener 89 cannot be snapped to male fastener 85 to cover snap fastener 86.

When the

89, 86 are snapped together, and snaps 94, 85 are snapped together, the lower folded portion of the leg protector may be inserted between lining 15b and the outer coat. Also it will be noted that lining 15a covers the lower portion of the leg protector which has now been raised up, as shown in FIG. 6.

Elastic strips 98 may be stitched at their outer ends to the ends or upper edge 16b of lining 1512, as at 98a and stitched at their inner ends 98b to said edge of said lining to pull outwardly at opposite ends of the lining to aid in keeping it smooth.

In FIGS. 7-9 there is shown a combination coat and leg protector assembly 1012 comprising a coat 11b and leg protectors 12b suspended therefrom.

The leg protectors 12b are similar to leg protectors 12a except that in the former, snap fasteners 94 are omitted. Instead, there is attached to the outer wall of each leg protector 12b a pair of female snap fasteners 1110 about one-third of the way up from the lower end, and located near the outer creased edges of the protector.

The coat 11b is formed with a single inner lining 101 formed with horizontal transverse slits 1112 at or below the hip line.

Means is provided to suspend the leg protectors from the coat. To this end, there is stitched to the inside of lining 101, at about the height of the upper ends of the coat pockets, strips 103 at each side of the coat. Stitched to the ends of each strip 103 preferably to the lining and outer coat, are snap fasteners 1194. It will be noted that a line extending down from the middle of the arm holes will be closer to the inner snap 104 than to the outer snap 104. The snaps 194 are spaced apart the same distance that snaps 1611) are spaced apart. Snaps 1114 are complementary to snaps 100.

Stitched to the strip 103 at a point directly below the bottom of the coat armhole, as at 105, is the upper end of a strip 106 of preferably elastic webbing. The lower end of strap or strip 106 carries a strap buckle 107. Stitched to the upper end of the outer wall of each leg protector 12b, as at 199, is an elastic strap 110 formed with a series of openings and adapted to adjustably engage with buckle 107.

The leg protectors 121) may be folded up to snap the fasteners 100 to the fasteners 104. To do this, the lower ends of the leg protectors are folded about a fold 111, and the middle portion is folded about a fold 112. The lower folded portion may be tucked down into slit 1132 to be received in a pocket between the lining 101 and the outer coat, as shown in FIG. 9. It will be noted that the lower ends of the leg protectors, the portions most likely to be wet and dirty, are hidden and concealed and not in contacts with the clothing worn by the user underneath the coat.

If desired, stop 59 and sleeve strap 57 may be omitted, and the loop 55 made so narrow that the snap fastener 62 cannot pass therethrough. In such case, the snap fastener d2. itself serves to stop sliding of the strap 56 through the loop in one, direction.

Snap fastener 65 is female whereas snap fastener 62 is male. The leg protector could be upfolded inwardly, strap end 56a pulled down, to raise the leg protector,

62, 65 snapped together, to retain the leg protector in upraised and upfolded condition. Guide sleeve 69 could be omitted together with its snap fastener 63, and in such case snap fastener 64 could also be omitted, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture as well as the manipulation. Disconnecting

snap fasteners

62, 65 would then permit the leg protector to upfold and also to drop down by gravity to pull the buckled end of the strap down until the snap fastener 62 (or stop 59) engages the loop 55.

The pocket 73 covers the raised and upfolded leg protector and prevents it from soiling the wearers clothing.

It will thus be seen that there is provided an article in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

I claim:

1. In combination, a coat having an arm hole, a leg protector having upper and lower ends, a single elongated strap, means attached to the coat, to suspend said strap from the inside of the coat adjacent said arm hole,

means to connect one end of said strap to the upper end of said protector, so that said protector may hang down from its upper end in predetermined position for use, and to allow swinging of said leg protector about the point of suspension to the coat when the wearer walks, without distorting the coat, the lower end of said leg protector being foldable upwardly, and said strap being movable to shorten its effective length from the point of its suspension to the coat, to the upper end of the leg protector, to raise the leg protector as a whole to a maximum raised position, and cooperating releasable attaching means on said strap and protector to maintain said lower end of said leg protector in upfolded condition, and the upfolded leg protector wholly raised in its maximum raised position of non-use, release of said releasable attaching means permitting the leg protector to unfold and drop by gravity as a whole to a predetermined lowered hanging position of use, said strap having means to stop the dropping of said leg protector in its lowered position, and means to adjust the length of the strap a plurality of variable distances from its point of connection to the leg protector, to the point of suspension of the strap to the coat, to vary said predetermined dropped lowered position of use, to accommodate the wearer.

2. The combination of claim 1, said strap comprising elastic means stretchable lengthwise of the strap, to allow stretching of the strap upon raising of the wearers arm when the leg protector is in use.

3. The combination of claim 1, the means to suspend the strap from the coat comprising a loop, means to attach the loop to the coat adjacent the armhole of the coat, said strap slidably passing through said loop, and said loop being located between the ends of the strap.

4. The combination of claim 3, said releasable attaching means, comprising means to releasably attach the lower end of the leg protector to the upper end of the leg protector and means to detachably connect the other end of said strap to the upper end of said leg protector.

5. The combination of claim 4, said means to connect the other end of said strap to the upper end of said leg protector, comprising a loop attached to said upper end of said protector, a first detachable fastener on said loop and a complementary detachable fastener on said other end of said strap, detachably attachable to said first fastener, and said strap having a portion passing between said last loop and said upper end of said protector.

6. The combination of claim 3, said means to stop the dropping of the leg protector comprising means at the 7 other end of said strap to engage said loop and stop the sliding of the strap through the loop.

7. The combination of claim 1, in combination with a means at the inside of said coat to cover at least a substantial portion of said upfolded leg protector.

8. The combination of claim 1, and normally straight, flexible, resilient transverse stiffener means at at least one end of said leg protector to aid in keeping said protector flat when not in use.

9. The combination of claim 1, said leg protector comprising a sleeve split longitudinally throughout its length and of such length as to permit wrapping said protector around the leg of a wearer substantially from the ankle to the knee of the wearer, and slider actuated separator means to detachably attach together the split edges of said leg protector in wrapped condition around the leg of the wearer by pulling the slider downwardly, and to detach said edges by pulling the slider upwardly.

10. The combination of claim 1, said leg protector comprising a sleeve split longitudinally throughout its length, slider actuated separator means to detachably attach together the split edges of said leg protector, said sleeve being adapted to be flattened when not in use to cause opposed portions of the sleeve to contact one another, to thereby provide opposed longitudinal side folds where said opposed contacting portions are interconnected, said slider actuated means being disposed longitudinally at the center line of one of said opposed contacting portions, and a transverse normally straight resilient flexible stiffener at at least one end of the other opposed contacting portion and crossing the longitudinal centerline of said protector between said folds.

11. The combination of claim 1, said means to suspend said strap from said coat comprising a loop, means to attach said loop to said coat, said strap slidably passing through said loop, stop means adjacent the other of said straps to engage said loop to stop sliding movement of said strap through said loop in one direction, and means to detachably connect said other end of said strap to the lower end of said protector.

12. The combination of claim 1, said means to suspend said strap from said coat comprising a loop, means to attach said loop to said coat, said strap slidably passing through said loop, a first detachable fastener at the other end of said strap, a second detachable fastener complementary to the first detachable fastener at the lower end of said leg protector, a third detachable fastener at the upper end of said leg protector complementary to said second detachable fastener, and a fourth detachable fastener at the upper end of said leg protector and complementary to said first detachable fastener.

Claims

1. IN COMBINATION, A COAT HAVING AN ARM HOLE, A LEG PROTECTOR HAVING UPPER AND LOWER ENDS, A SINGLE ELONGATED STRAP, MEANS ATTACHED TO THE COAT, TO SUSPEND SAID STRAP FROM THE INSIDE OF THE COAT ADJACENT SAID ARM HOLE, MEANS TO CONNECT ONE END OF SAID STRAP TO THE UPPER END OF SAID PROTECTOR, SO THAT SAID PROTECTOR MAY HANG DOWN FROM ITS UPPER END IN PREDETERMINED POSITION FOR USE, AND TO ALLOW SWINGING OF SAID LEG PROTECTOR ABOUT THE POINT OF SUSPENSION TO THE COAT WHEN THE WEARER WALKS, WITHOUT DISTORTING THE COAT, THE LOWER END OF SAID LEG PROTECTOR BEING FOLDABLE UPWARDLY, AND SAID STRAP BEING MOVABLE TO SHORTEN ITS EFFECTIVE LENGTH FROM THE POINT OF ITS SUSPENSION TO THE COAT, TO THE UPPER END OF THE LEG PROTECTOR, TO RAISE THE LEG PROTECTOR AS A WHOLE TO A MAXIMUM RAISED POSITION, AND COOPERATING RELEASABLE ATTACHING MEANS ON SAID STRAP AND PROTECTOR TO MAINTAIN SAID LOWER END OF SAID LEG PROTECTOR IN UPFOLDED CONDITION, AND THE UPFOLDED LEG PROTECTOR WHOLLY RAISED IN ITS MAXIMUM RAISED POSITION OF NON-USE, RELEASE OF SAID RELEASABLE ATTACHING MEANS PERMITTING THE LEG PROTECTOR TO UNFOLD AND DROP BY GRAVITY AS A WHOLE TO A PREDETERMINED LOWERED HANGING POSITION OF USE, SAID STRAP HAVING MEANS TO STOP THE DROPPING OF SAID LEG PROTECTOR IN ITS LOWERED POSITION, AND MEANS TO ADJUST THE LENGTH OF THE STRAP A PLURALITY OF VARIABLE DISTANCES FROM ITS POINT OF CONNECTION TO THE LEG PROTECTOR, TO THE POINT OF SUSPENSION OF THE STRAP TO THE COAT, TO VARY SAID PREDETERMINED DROPPED LOWERED POSITION OF USE, TO ACCOMMODATE THE WEARER.
