Description

May 5 1964 R. ALT
COMBINED HAIR-DRESSING TABLE AND CHAIR Filed Aug. 8, 1961 W w YQW United States Patent 3,131,968 COMBINED HAIR-DRESSING TABLE AND CHAIR Ren Alt, 8 Rue des Pontonniers, Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), France Filed Aug. 8, 1961, Ser. No. 130,168 Claims priority, application France Sept. 28, 1960 1 Claim. (Cl. 297-185) The present invention relates to a transformable piece of furniture, to wit: a chair adapted to be changed into a hair-dressing table.
The necessity of providing a modern furniture and of cutting out the presence of very bulky pieces of furniture in standard housings, has led to resorting to combined pieces of furniture adapted to be used for two purposes and which are transformable or foldable. Toilet tables or hair-dressing tables in particular are now too bulky and it is one object of the present invention to provide a combined dressing table and chair, which replaces them, while serving the same purpose, which chair is provided with a back adapted to be used either as an ordinary seat back or as a hair dresser table.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a combined hair dressing table and chair which comprises an actual seat formed by a tubular metal skeleton and provided with -a laterally opening drawer in which the hair dressing implements or the like may be housed while the back, which forms a small cupboard including a plurality of compartments adapted to carry various srnall bottles and beauty products, is provided with a hinged door adapted to be opened and to be folded back upwardly so as to show on its inner now apparent surface a mirror capped by a tubular electric bulb. The back is carried by at least one upright arranged laterally on the same side as the drawer in the seat, so as to allow the user to sit on the seat facing the mirror while, in its closed condition, the chair may be used in the same manner as an ordinary chair the seat and back of which are covered by a suitable fabric.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a combined hair dressing chair and table, wherein the compartments in the cupboard formed in the back are designed in a manner such that the tubular lamp may be collapsed within the cupboard in the closed condition of the chair.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the piece of furniture in its closed position serving as a seat showing the drawer in the seat;
FIG. 2 is a perspective side view of the tubular metal skeleton of the piece of furniture; and
FIG. 3 is a perspective side view showing the manner of using the when displayed so as to form a dressingtable, the user being seated facing the back of the chair.
As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the combined piece of furniture includes chiefly a tubular metal skeleton 1, the actual seat 2 and a back 3 fitted on the skeleton comprising, as illustrated (in FIG. 2, a tube forming a lateral upright 4, continued by a lateral loop 5 adapted to carry the back 3, a second upright 6 forming a duplicate of the upright 4 and extending downwardly, so as to form a double foot 7, a transverse bar 8, a further double foot 9 and a further transverse bar 10, the seat 2 being carried ice by the two bars 8 and 10. The seat 2 is provided with a drawer 11 opening laterally to the same side as the double upright 4, 5 land 6, the drawer 11 serving for the housing of toilet implements such as brushes, combs, haircurlers, razors and the like.
The back 3 is constituted by a small cupboard or rectangular box 12 subdivided into compartments for housing small bottles and beauty products and also for housing the tubular electric lamp 13 fitted in the cover 14 which is hingedly secured to the cupboard body and may be folded upwardly and inside which is also secured a mirror 15, said cover carrying the mirror and lamp being collapsed when closed within the cupboard.
The back 3 is angularly shiftable over an extension of the tube 6 forming the loop 5 of the skeleton. The two twin uprights 4 and 6 of the skeleton may form a single upright as illustrated in FIG. 3.
Of course, the seat 2 and the back 3 are covered by a suitable fabric such as a washable imitation fabric such as a tweed of plastic material and enclosing advantageously a padding so that the may serve as an ordinary padded chair.
FIG. 3 shows how the piece of furniture may serve as a dressing table, the user being seated in front of the mirror provided on the cover in its open position, while she is also within easy reach of the necessary auxiliaries which are carried, either in the small cupboard on the back, or inside the drawer to the left hand side when open. An electric plug allows using an electric razor.
While I have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claim.
What I claim is:
A convertible article of furniture to be used selec tively as a conventional chair and as a dressing table, comprising a tubular metal skeleton including a pair of upwardly extending rear feet spaced apart from each other,
a pair of upwardly extending front feet spaced apart from each other, and
a skeleton back projecting upwardly from one of said rear feet on one side of said tubular metal skeleton,
a longitudinal bar connecting each of said front feet with the corresponding of said rear feet,
a seat body bridging said longitudinal bars,
a back body pivotally secured to the upper end of said skeleton back,
said back body comprising a cupboard casing adapted to receive bottles and beauty products and a cover hingedly secured to the upper end of said cupboard casing and receiving a mirror, said cover being foldable upwardly, and
said back body being completely spaced apart from said seat body for a predetermined distance in order to permit the user, when using said article of furniture as a dressing table, to use said article of furniture such to face said back body [and to put the legs into the space between said seat body and said back body toward the rear of said (References on following page) i References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Easfce V Feb. 17, 1891 Anderson Apr. 25, 1922 Larsen June 13, 1939 Yusek Nov. 3, 1942 Rogers May 9, 1944 Fowlerr et ail.
